So, this is my theory regarding the pet controversy (yes, it's VERY dramatic); People tend to see Kaidan as being kinda like themselves or someone they know. Why? Because we have nothing/very little to base an assumption on.

I was basing my guess on his social habits as we know them.  Kaidan seems to be a textbook introvert - he like's being social, but on his own terms.  All the dogs I've ever known, bar the one that hated everyone and only got along with one person, have been very extroverted.  I see a dog as tiring Kaidan's social meter out quickly and then wanting more, exasperating him.

Other pets, for the most part, are far less socially tiring.  Sugar gliders, maybe, require more attention than dogs... ^_^

Re: Ethnicity ( I forgot )

I suspect that Kaidan, like everyone else in Mass Effect (or at least, in ME1) is supposed to be heavily mixed.  What went into that mix is definitely an interesting question, but it's hard to tell other than "grew up Canadian."

Edit: Whoops.  Here:

The Great Kaidan Alenko Pet Controversy (TGKAPC) 2011™.

Since I posed the question, I guess I should try and answer it from my pov. Only, I have no idea.

The shirtless horse-riding thing ... well that was partly fantasy, but also, I guess I could see him being the kind of guy who, when he leaves the Alliance, would like to settle down in the country, with a bit of land, a couple of horses, maybe a dog (a big dog, or a working dog). I see him as a practical guy, so not really into cute furry animals for the sake of having cute furry pets. And as for the settling in the country thing ... well that comes purely from his comments on the Citadel, when he says there are too many people, it's too busy, not his kind of place, etc.

That said, my Shep is a guy who thrives in the anonymity that sort of busy, bustling city life brings. After growing up running with gangs on Earth, he feels at home when on Omega, or in the Wards. And Kaidan's come to appreciate that about Shep, and has even started to like some aspects of that himself; likewise, he's taught Shep that it can be good to take a step back, slow things down a bit, and enjoy a slower pace of life every now and again.

If they stay together, I can't see Shep wanting to move out into the country with Kaidan, but I can't really imagine Kaidan ever being fully comfortable with spending the rest of his life in a bustling metropolis. I guess that would be a bridge they'd have to cross once they came to it.

(This is all how I see my Shep and Kaidan, of course ... I realise not everyone has the same feeling about this.)

Mine did, too. But it's my fault. I gave him permission to romance Ashley.

I think that counts as 'irreconcilable differences', right? ;)

my hub hasn't gotten as far as Virmire, but from the conversations we've had - Kaidan will survive, because he's the more useful team member (pragmatic isn't he, this man of mine :P)

I'd like to think that Kaidan could become a pet person, even dog person precisely because he prefers to avoid people. he's not an introvert because he doesn't like them, he's that way because of his headaches - doesn't do well with noise or too many lights. cannot see him becoming as nutty as I am, at least as long as I try to be objective, but I don't think he'd have any issues with taking care of a dog - he comes across as a very responsible, almost meticulous person to me. not an active dog though, I can see him do very well with say newfie, and not so well with something like a boxer or a chihuahua (too active, can be too noisy, not good for headaches - newfies on the other hand can be incredibly soothing :P). But I honestly think he'd do pretty well with any animals (yes, I'm big time projecting my husband into Kaidan >_>)

I think he could enjoy living in a country, but I don't think he'd have trouble adopting to other environments, he's an officer in alliance navy after all. but I don't see him retiring anytime soon - whatever else he is, I think he'd be like Anderson, serving for as long as he could, and just adopting to living wherever that service would take him.

P.S. Reference images for men and cats - found.   be very afraid.  for now, I leave you with a man that sorta kinda looks like Kaidan :P

didn't I mention I bought one of those posable artist manequeens.  mostly becasue I kept getting human proportions horribly wrong when trying to draw Kaidan?  no, I'm not obsessing, what gave you THAT idea

Pets - I see Kaidan with a kind of Data from Next Generation attitude to pets, a cat that he would watch and care for without fussing too much (I mean fussing around, not petting, iyswim?) Just imo ;-)

Husbands - If I ever got my husband into it, I suspect Kaidan would survive because he wouldn't do the romances, that just lengthens time in between shooting things :-O Yeaaaaaaaah............... We really don't play the same games, lol!

I just asked my partner if he ever played Mass Effect who he would play as and who he would romance. He says he'd play as femShep (I knew he would), but that he'd probably not romance anyone. I'd force him to save Kaidan :D

I just finished a playthrough for my husband, since he wanted a single Shepard in ME2 for the Tali romance and never has time to play anymore. I told him I wasn't sure how not to romance Ashley with a male Shepard other then romancing Liara, Ash can be a little feisty. He told me that if I failed to not romance Ashley that I could always leave her on Virmire. So...I may not have tried very hard to keep Shepard single. Now my husband will have the opportunity to get to know Kaidan a little better, makes me happy.

I'm so jealous of some of you and your ability to not only draw humans with actual human proportions but your ability to capture facial likeness, so even when its not photographically perfect, its still very recognizable.

must...practice..more :/ one of these days...

re: husbands (well, not at all husband)

-You have a badass Shepard as your wallpaper.

-Umm... Shepard?

-Yes, very manly default maleShep. Real saviour of the galaxy, not your blondie "Commanders".

-And it's nothing wrong with the fact that person has brown eyes?

-What? He always had.

-Nevermind.

And, regarding me/us spending so much time in the gutter, it's a really nice gutter! Posted Image A bit crowded perhaps.. Posted Image But as we say in Sweden, if there's room in the heart, there's room for the ass (which is very fitting for this thread).

Yeah, I love that saying :D

Playing ME again, this time around I brought Wrex with me to Fist. That went different than before. That was so surprising, made me really happy. Having new things happen in a mission depending on who you brought with you, instant replay-bonus! Me like.

This time around I'll not romance Kaidan no matter how much I would like to do it. Did the mistake of romancing Alistair twice in a row when playing DAO. Second time around I could the lines a little to good, learned my lesson and now I try to switch it around a bit. This one will romance Liara in stead. Oki, I'll get a bit less Kaidan time, but the goal for me isn't to romance him every time but rather that every time that I do get to romance him, I'll get as weak in the knees as I did the first time. How do you guys make replays more fun?
