Playing ME again, this time around I brought Wrex with me to Fist. That went different than before. That was so surprising, made me really happy. Having new things happen in a mission depending on who you brought with you, instant replay-bonus! Me like.

This time around I'll not romance Kaidan no matter how much I would like to do it. Did the mistake of romancing Alistair twice in a row when playing DAO. Second time around I could the lines a little to good, learned my lesson and now I try to switch it around a bit. This one will romance Liara in stead. Oki, I'll get a bit less Kaidan time, but the goal for me isn't to romance him every time but rather that every time that I do get to romance him, I'll get as weak in the knees as I did the first time. How do you guys make replays more fun?

I dunno.  It's never gotten stale for me in about 80 games.  I've never had that problem.

play different classes and genders, romance different people, create different backstories and personalities, so that changes the choices you make - even if overall story is similar, it still makes for a different journey.

I tend to model my characters after someone else fictional characters, makes it easier to figure out their motivations :)  my renegade Shep (whom I'm currently playing exclusively) is a cross between several different female protagonists of M.J Davidson

I can do multiple playthroughs if I stop worrying about doing all the side quests and just pick the ones that are important to my Shep's story.

For the renagon Vanguard Shep I've just completed ME1 with (on disc 2 content of ME2 with him now), I missed tons of side quests out. Originally I wasn't that invested in him as a character, and honestly only wanted to play it because I wanted the save game with the Ash romance ... but as I got into playing him I realised I really liked his character. Perhaps it was because I wasn't really trying to mold him in a certain way that he developed in a way I haven't seen before. Now I'm really interested in his decisions and motivation through ME2, and am actually considering New Game +-ing him back into ME1 to play through again with a save Kaidan decision (and more of the side quests completed). I like this guy so much, because he really interests me, that he may become one of my canons after all :D

Heh, My husband would call it obsession.

But all those Shepards went to their digital afterlives when our 360's graphics card crapped out.  I think I had about a dozen, with various states of completion and numbers of times through.

I'm down to three.  One of whom just shut down the romance this week.  :crying:  She's the first one to do that.  She's not to ME2 yet, though, so no pics.

Ah yes, would this be Rachel? D: I think if Kaidan is available as a new romance in ME3 for those who previously didn't romance him I will start a new game in ME3 (if I can stand the defaults it picks, ugh) to see it before deciding to go through the whole rigmarole of denying him in ME1. I just can't deny Kaidan. <3

This is only my first road block. I have to get her through ME2 and not romance Garrus, either. Rachel's going to drive me nuts.

Kaidan was tougher to shut down though. I've at least not romanced Garrus before and you don't have to be rude or mean to shut him down.

you know I was pretty sure that you could avoid Kaidan's romance if you were just neutral - form the very start. I was a bit rude to him on this particular play through, but that's' because it fits Simone's personality, she's basically rude to everyone, and Kaidan specifically pushes her buttons in that regard, because he's too calm and reasonable.

now I feel like starting another neutral playthrough just to test my theory O_O

Shutting down Kaidan is like ripping off a bandaid. Do it quick.

That being said, I still prefer to romance him than not to romance him. You lose out a lot of little things by having no romance in ME1.

I still don't really understand the way ME1 romances work. I tried to do an Ash romance ages ago, and despite being really nice to her all the time it never triggered. I have no idea at what point I did something wrong ... but Shep ended up single (didn't romance Liara either). I was really scratching my head over that one, because I was actively pursuing that option, but couldn't get it.

This latest attempt, I managed to trigger it fine. Every time I talked to Liara I picked neutral or renegade options with her, told her several times (or however many times you get the opportunity to) that I liked Ash and wasn't interested in her; I told Ash I didn't like Liara and was only interested in Ash; and yet I STILL got the freaking showdown in the comm room with them both telling me I had to choose. Seriously, wtf? As far as I'm concerned, that whole situation is broken. I couldn't have been clearer throughout the whole game about how cold Shep was towards Liara, about how he really liked Ash, and yet there's Liara, saying she got the feeling I liked her, and there's Ash, saying I couldn't go on playing both of them. o.O

I may be wrong here, but I think the primary trigger is the very first conversation you have with them. with Ash/Kaidan its - "it wasn't your fault". if you pick one of the other 2 options, I believe it effectively puts you on a friend/colleague path. With Liara, I believe its the options you chose when she first comes aboard and expresses interest in you as if you were a relic.

now I'm not 100% sure about Liara, as she's the trickiest one to avoid I think especialy if you're never rude to her.

I've never accidentally started the romance dialogue with Liara.

I have used the "renegade" line where you snap at Kaidan when you first get off EP, but I talked to him very sweetly in the very next dialogue and it kept the "romance" path going.

Pfft, it's so complex. Seems like certain things work for some but not for others. I never once chose a paragon option with Liara, shut her down coldly at every opportunity, and still there she was. (It was the one and only time I've ever had that showdown in the comm room too ... I've never had it when romancing Kaidan regardless of whether I've been nice to Liara or not.)

They really do try to push mShep onto Liara, don't they? I don't appreciate that. Not one bit.

hmm...maybe its paragon options outweighing neutral or renegade ones?

that's it, I'm rolling a new femshep that's skipping all but essential story quests, just to test out the neutral path. I might need Mass Effect anonymous O_O

edited to add - I think Liara is bugged sometimes.  at least that's what I've been told on another forums. ending a romance doesn't always work with her.

Yeah, it seems like ending the romance is bugged. Which is weird. I've got several single mShep games where he had no problem not initiating a romance with either Liara or Ash, but in this single, solitary one where I decided to romance Ash Liara would not go away >.<

Neutral path turns on the Kaidan romance, too. A friend did that. She was very upset. She was trying to make a single Shep.

huh. no wonder they made ME2 romances so much more obvious to start and to end O_O I wish there was a nice middle ground between "lets shag - wait lets not shag" and "we're slowly building up a relationship but that relationship can turn into romance at any point without you even realizing it, unless you are outright rude" O_O

Yup. I really don't like the way the ME2 romances are constructed (as we discussed a while back). And while I really love the slow build up of them in ME1, and think that's by far the better way to do that kind of content, it really should be easier to not initiate a relationship if you don't want one, without coming across as a dick.

It's real easy to avoid romance with Jacob, oddly enough (Even with Hale's vomit voice) and very easy to accidentally shut him down once started, this is clearly a man not be messed with lol....

You have to decide very early on, if you are going to romance him and not be careful what you say. Not quite sure which is better, tbh! I would hate for one mistake to wreck a Kaidan romance.....

I'm like Sia where I have about 80 playthroughs of ME1.

But ME2? I have 2. I can't be assed to pick it up again either; the entirety of that game made me lose interest in the franchise tbh.

Funnily enough I had problems with my Kaidan romance tonight, first time around not knowing about it I stumbled in to it but second time around Liara was more pushy - I told her I liked Kaidan and she then came back with but you like me too don't you... I think it was because I went to her first or maybe paid too much interest in her. I don't like my women pushy LOL

I had a dream last night that Bioware announced a Kaidan-centric DLC, and they posted TONS of screenshots and concept art.  I half-expected to come online today and see it was true.  :crying:  Curse you, subconscious!
