Wow just wow. Just did the shadow broker for the first time with a female shepard that romanced Liara. If we get Kaidan dlc that's even half this good I'll be happy beyond words =) This was the best dlc I ever did, I am super hyped for the next one now. Ohh pretty please let it be Kaidan.

The way I see all the 'supporting characters' and their personalities is that they are constructed pretty much like supporting characters in novels – they have one central personality trait that tends to define almost everything about them, makes them easy to recognise, easy to communicate with, and that leaves the main character (in our case, Shepard) free to be the star of the show, the one with a deeper personality and backstory.

That's not to say supporting characters are necessarily 2-dimensional, or rather that they need come across that way. There is still scope for character development, and indeed we see that in ME1 by the way you can renegade Kaidan, for example. However, it does mean we're only ever told what we need to be told about those characters in order to support the main character's story.

When writers write stories where some of these supporting characters take on larger roles and become one of the main characters themselves, as we see in a lot of ME fic, there has to be room for those personalities to be fleshed out. Kaidan, for example, can certainly be written as 'out of character', and that can be very jarring. However, that is done when people disregard the aspects of his personality we already know from the game. What isn't necessarily out of character, to my mind at least, is when writers add extra elements to what we already know, in order to create a more 3-dimensional character who is capable of leading a story themselves.

So I know I for one am more than willing to have my own vision of Kaidan challenged to a degree in other people's fic, as long as I recognise something about him, with the introduction of other traits, motivations, previous history, etc.

There's a fine line to be observed though, between maintaining a link between what we already know about a character, and including things that expand on that in unexpected ways. If it can be done well, though, I welcome sides to Kaidan (or whoever) that weren't present in the game.

@Catabuca - OOC characterizations of Kaidan will make me stop reading a fic immediately. I'm not looking for an identical Kaidan to the games, people change according to events they've lived through but it still has to be believable to me.

On the topic of fic I've been following a new Shenko fic on ff.net that I'm really enjoying and haven't seen mentioned here before.  Manipulations

^ So very much this.

I am certainly open to interpretations of Kaidan, but it still has to be believable that it's still him. And there are certain things, that I do not believe Kaidan would do. I don't care if you left him alone, or renegaded him. And as soon as he's ooc, I stop reading the story. And, I feel the same about other characters too. I might give more leeway for characters that I'm less knowledgeable on, but I still feel they should be kept true to form.

Heck, the #1 thing I always asked my betas, is X character believable? It's not OOC? I was constantly worried that my interpreation would be grossly wrong. And the last thing I wanted is to misrepresent any character, least of all Kaidan.

Like I said, there's a fine line between fleshing out a character with new traits (which, arguably, you have to do if you take a supporting character and make them a main) and staying faithful to what we already know of him.

I certainly don't stop reading if something is OOC though. I don't own Kaidan, and I'm always excited to read other people's interpretations of him, whether they gel with mine or not.

afternoon ladies and gentlemen and I feel the same way.  there are certain core values that Kaidan has and while you can add pieces of the past to him, hobbies, other little things, His core, his principles, even renegaded doesn't change.  and no matter how good the fanfic might be otherwise, I just have to stop a lot of times, step back for a few and then try to read the fic on its own merit as if it was the story about original characters that just happen to have the same names as my favorite characters.

and heck I know now how difficult it can be to keep the characters still beleivable, still recognizable, because our perceptions are often colored by our preconceptions and expectations, we don't always see the same things in a character as everyone else.

As Leah said, there are certain principles and values that characters have. There are certain things that I find so character-breaking OOC for Kaidan that when I see someone write about it, it's a complete and utter turn-off. I love to see other people's take on the character, but having Kaidan do something that is so antithetical to who he is, and how he was presented in game, is the most sure-fire way to get me to stop reading a fic.

On a unrelated note. Did another play through of ME2 and drinking with Chakwas got me wondering. You catch the tail end of a story she was telling about Jenkins and Kaidan. You guys remember Jenkins? The red shirt who dies five minutes into the ME1 after telling you about his youth on Eden Prime. Anyways, Chakwas says that she thought "Kaidan's biotic display might have broken Jenkin's back." I was wondering how the hell Kaidan could have let loose enough to nearly injury someone like that. I just can't imagen him doing something as childish as showing off.

That conversation always reminded me of this actually, which never fails to make me giggle.

Not directly related to Kaidan but still interesting:

Z-Dragon wrote...

A Dorkly article, Love & Videogames: A Valentine's Day Infographic, listed, among others, the results of a poll about who player's romanced in Mass Effect 2, the results were:

Miranda - 42%
Tali - 26%
Jack - 6%
Jacob - 1%
Garrus - 5%
Thane - 2%
Kelly - 4%
Samara - 2%
Morinth - 1%
Nobody - 13%

For those who chose to romance nobody, I wonder how many of them were choosing to remain loyal to their ME1 love interest, and how many of them simply didn't find any of the ME2 LI's interesting or are holding out for a same-sex romance.

Ah, I saw that Chig. Interesting stats. Of course, self-selecting polls, etc., etc. But still.

Poor Jacob. But also, poor 13% who held out for whoever.

just hopping in to share the Shepard I'm playing right now, I created her a while ago, but didn't really play much until yesterday - of course she's falling in love with Kaidan :P though Horizon affects her differently from my other 2 Kaidan loving Sheps. you know for a supposedly light on rpg, heavy on shooter franchise, ME sure inspires a great deal of role playing efforts O_O (although I'm finding it difficult to rp a less emotional character in ME2 :/ )

oh and that poll is...fairly typical conciderign the general advertising.  sometimes it can be difficult not to get mad at Ash.  she is a good character and she's been neglected as well, but at least she's in trialers and advertising.  sometimes Kaidan feels like the character they tried to relegate to almost Jenkins like role, but he would just have none of it.  still ...

(huh, just realized that apparently I used the same mouth shape for 3 different shepards..huh :/)

Eh.  I'm never sure about characterization myself, so I try not to be too hard on other people.  I've considered a few things not quite in line to my interpretation that'll make me pause, but I'm not gonna rag on people if that's how they see him.

Mostly, it's the drastic villainization I can't stand.

Drastic villainization is bad, m'kay.

That said, I've read some DA fics where some of the characters have been written ... er, substantially darker, and while it's a stretch to necessarily believe the character in the game would ever say and do those things, I've tried to just go with it, if it's a well-written story in all other regards anyway.
