I'd say a lot of the dislike towards Kaidan is pretty much Carthitis. When I hear the expected "ewww Carth" comment, I rebuttal with "So you also don't like Scorch?". It results in the person shutting up to either they can't argue that point or have to go fire up Republic Commando to double check the voices.

My fiance was one who didn't like Kaidan until we made a deal. He'd try a Kaidan romance if I gave a non-biotic class a playthrough. End result was I found I do enjoy infiltrators and he admitted the Kaidan romance was the best handled out of the options. He was also surprised at how good a team-mate Kaidan turned out of you specc'd him right.

As for ME2 Shepard gets a picture of Kaidan on her desk (an oddly on Anderson desk too, can someone care to explain THAT one to me?)

My explanation for that has always been that Anderson had a mentor/student relationship with Kaidan.

In the background that I made up for things:

Anderson was the first person Kaidan served under once he was out of training, which is what established that relationship.  Since Kaidan was shipped off to "brain camp" at an early age, he's not all that close to his family anymore (again, this is my version, don't know if it conflicts with anything that is technically "canon") and Anderson became almost like a second/new father.

This is also why Kaidan was on the Normandy in the first place: Anderson knew how good he was, trusted him, and requested that he be assigned when he took over as the Normandy's commander.

I think those circumstances would explain Kaidan's picture on Anderson's desk regardless of whether Kaidan is alive or dead.  In my playthroughs, seeing that picture is a little sad, though, because Kaidan didn't make it off Virmire... Posted Image

THIS!

Also, I have to say, I think this is a problem with a lot of people.

My first playthrough of ME1, I selected Kaidan all the time for missions, but it was because I liked his character.  I used the auto leveling, and I wasn't careful enough about giving him the right bio amp, etc.  Frankly, the number of bio amps and multi tools was so overwhelming that in my first playthrough I tended to just ignore them.

In later playthroughs, though, as I got used to how the game worked, I payed more attention to the characters.  I assigned points myself, and I made sure to giave Kaidan the proper bio amp and omni tool. And, he ROCKED as a result.

Anyone who says that he was a weak squadmate in ME1 just isn't playing the game right.

Yeah Kaidan was my "Save Shepard's Ass" squadmate. I could almost imagine her running from a charging Korgan because she all her biotic powers were still cooling and her gun had overheated with her screaming "save me save me!!"

Honestly I think I could have played ME1 with just Kaidan and Shepard. Lift, throw, and sabotage were godsends.

Edwin Shepard (now my current "canon" Shep, and the one where I really unlocked Kaidan's potential) isn't even a biotic. He's just a straightforward soldier.

He needs someone like Kaidan on his team for the tech/biotic skills.

Just finished arrival , it was fun and very cool but I sort of expected Kaidan to surprise me with a cameo , ah well. Theres a theory going around that the VS is the one that has to "bring you in" after what you did at the end of arrival. How would you feel about that? It would feel like horizon 2.0 but I'm sure the VS would realize why shepard has done what she has and eventually help her. I'm loving the idea of a trial though, kaidan would be there to testify as well as some other people

It's possible.  Conatix was supposed to have made a major effort in separating the kids from their families.  Kaidan is on good terms with his, as far as we can tell, but we don't know when or how that came about (at most, we know that he and his father reconciled some time after he had joined the Alliance).

And, yeah, my tech-inept, "I don't trust biotics" Soldier!Shepard came to respect Kaidan's versatility.  He opens stubborn doors and containers, neural-shocks or lifts krogan and geth prime that are charging her down, tosses little discs that make everyone unable to shoot, boosts healing for her and Ashley - it's awesome.

The man can juggle geth colossuses, for crying out loud.  :o

"There will be consequences for cheating" = your ME1 LI lies about you in court to make your life harder.  XD

... honestly?  The idea that the VS would be the one to bring you in has been tossed around long before we had in-game proof that there was a trial to be had.  Them being the Shepard to your Saren, etc.  Could be interesting if done well; probably won't be, is my thoughts.

I have been tossing around that idea in my head for a while to. I like to imagine that Kaidan is sent after my Shepard to bring her in. His first idea is to help her, not actually do what he is told. If he finds out that Shepard did or did not cheat on him then he might decide to go ahead with the plan or not. If Shepard cheats, I don't think he would ever be her enemy but he might not be there if she needs him.

Eww Kaidan hate. Not everybody has to like him, but the amount of cocking-my-head-to-the-side moments some comments give me..
I do believe DAII has produced one character I've seen more people rage on than him, though. I suppose a step up, since he actually has a reason to actually be hated, no?

I can see them playing it as Kaidan's sent to bring Shep in as well as having him testify at the trial in either a pro-Shep or anti-Shep manner. Whichever way they end up rolling with it should be intriguing.

Clearly, Kaidan sucks.  He is too well adjusted.  Well adjusted people suck.  What Mass Effect needs is characters that conform to mass anarchy.

You know when people say that he's "boring"? I agree; I take that more as a compliment to him. Sh*t happened in his past, he moved on. He's through it, just another mostly normal guy. He got sucked into the whole fray sure, but he's stable. Or as stable as many of the companions can be.

Speaking as one who used to be all about dating the 'bad boys' and even marrying one at one point, I can heartily say the well adjusted ones are the ones most worth it.  All that drama from the bad boys never goes away.

ACTUALLY...

yes.  probably.  I don't know.
It may have started that way, but Shepard is a whole different thing now.  She kinda dissociated herself from that and became an entity all her own.  It's hard to describe.

Hmm.. Flirting is not allowed on the forums, right? Hurts morale and what not..?

I feel I'm getting that whole femshep-in-the-armory groove going.. Posted Image

That would honestly crack me up, Liara doing a 180 and lying at your trial after she couldn't care less in LotSB.

I say those consequences are quite moot at this point. And my Shep promised to turn herself in, but maybe she needs someone to give her a ride to Earth.. Posted Image

Strange question for the guys in here. Going to sound weird, but hell not as weird as romancing aliens frankly.

*De-lurks*

Closest thing to myself?  The only thing we have in common is that were both Male.  Im going have to go to the Gym for a while to get Kadian's chest!  :P

Romancing Kaidan as femshep is different entirely as I am putting myself in her shoes. Is it weird? No not at all. For Amelia her background made this very easy. They are both biotics and both have had a troublesome childhood when they were put in impossible situations. However this defines each of them as they know no limits or boundaries. They achieve what ever they set their mind too. Also the simple fact they can easily relate to each other. Even if Kaidan wasnt Amelia's romance option, he would easily be her best friend. Although im sure the tension build up you could cut with a knife at times! hehe... Nah, just wouldnt work out as friends.

Yeah...the physical resemblance might be just slightly off

My Shepard does relate well to Kaidan, but I was suspecting that it couldn't just be that after I was completely uninterested in any of the LI's in ME2, even though they might theoretically be interesting to her.
