I had a weird dream the other night. In it, BioWare finally released a Virmire Survivor DLC to quell our complaining for it. To play the DLC, you had to go to the Citadel. So, going to the Citadel, you enter through a door after imputting a code and you're treated to...

... the very same romance conclusion scene that you got in ME1, same graphics and everything. And that concluded the Virmire Survivor DLC.

Sounds like your brain got lazy and just decided to reuse old material instead of assembling a whole DLC

Since this thread needs more Kaidan, here's this again (was posted here a bunch of pages ago, a bit NSFW):

EDIT: Made link clicky

God, I can't express how much I love that comic. Its so bittersweet. Made me choke up a bit when I first seen it. Still gets me a little emotional. And I know his hair is kind of curly and probably won't look like that unless it is wet but I really like his 'bedroom' hair. To see his hair go from perfectly tamed and combed back, to wild and messy just fits his personality perflectly. One moment he is in claim and in control the next he is jumping in bed with a fiery battlemaiden.

Okay, first of all to the gentlemen; it's not all about abs and getting the hair bump just right. Posted Image But I'll behave...

Secondly, I'm reading a lot of fanfic where Kaidan has been slightly "improoved", and although I enjoy reading it I'm not quite sure I would actually like Kaidan being more bad ass. I get that he would fit in better with the rest of the squad, but I like him understated and less "cartooney".

What do you guys think?

Wait, Kurt, what vision? You mean the one where Shepard gets zapped by Object Rho?

*tries frantically to recall*

I don't remember seeing the VS at all in that. It came across as very fast and confusing; mostly what I remember seeing are the Reapers. Or do you mean something else?

Yeah, it's the "suicide by reaper's" one if you let the clock run down... Lots of Ash at least, and that is probably positive for Kaidan as well.

I agree with the sentiment of not specifically updating Kaidan to fit in with the SR2 crew's flavor of badass, but then I'm not sure which fic you mean, so it's hard to say.

Well, the one that made me think about it most recently was "Manipulations" by akg.writes. I'm really loving that fic (if any of you haven't read it by now, I highly recommend it), and through flash backs you can sense how Kaidan changes between ME1 and ME2/3. It's done really well, but I can't help mourning the ME1 Kaidan apparently lost and fearing that this is what we'll get if we get him back in ME3.

It happened to the other cast from ME1, with mixed results if you ask me.

Manipulations is one of my favorite ME fics, I'd put in on the list of my top 5 Shenko fics.  I’ve been following it almost from the beginning. I pretty much drop whatever I’m doing to read an update as soon as I see the alert in my inbox.
Manipulations

I have no trouble buying the changes to Kaidan’s personality with how she presents the story; it’s very believable that it’s a response to the events he’s lived through. She also has tons of very well written flashbacks in it that do show Kaidan as we’d expect him to be pre destruction of the SR1.

Uh, this is basically what I was trying to say. Thanks for making it clearer! Posted Image

I have no trouble buying it, the fic is great and very believable, but I personally don't want it for ME3. Kaidan not-so-bad-ass Alenko is simply more attractive to me than the new-and-improved version, BUT I'm curious to see if the fans agree since I read a lot of fanfic where he is more assertive/bad ass.

Damn, I do need to make my original posts easier to understand... Posted Image Sorry about that.

I don't think I agree with the description used, because imo Kaidan IS badass, did you use him in combat?!

lol
But, i get what you mean, i like him normal the way he is in ME, however it would be completely implausible if not even slight changes to personality happen, due to what he's been through.

Akg, in manipulations, handles that pretty well. Just to clarify for all of those who haven't read Manipulations, Kaidan after Shep's reserruction isn't badass in the sense of ME2 stylized badass, no. It's just that he's hardened, you could say.  So yeah, I'd like to see a hardened kaidan, because it would make sense with all the crap he's been through.

Again, I don't want to see Kaidan THAT changed, but he needs to be hardened, and has some protective barriers around him whenever Shepard is around (Her death and reserruction are a lot to take, and he loves her!) but I hope BW can do it so he could still be in character

I did, and I agree.. Posted Image But after the fight, he's more sweet than bad ass. And I really like him that way. I agree that it makes sense to have him be more hardened in ME3, and I certainly wouldn't throw a fit if Bioware tweeks him if it's done well (like in Manipulations, for example). But I would prefer if they didn't.

Manipulations is such a good reference because in that story I love Kaidan in present time, but I completely and utterly adore him in the flash backs. The "Ah, sweetheart"-line almost broke my fangirl heart..

I love Manipulations!  Shenzi always finds the best fics :)

What I particularly appreciate and enjoy is the vision of an extremely competent Kaidan.  I loved Kaidan in ME1.  He was a regular squaddie. Quiet, unassuming, knowledgeable and extremely capable.  However, in many ways it often felt like he was overshadowed by Shepard to the point of almost being invisible (not to her of course, but in comparison to her).

So what I like about Manipulations is that not only is Kaidan presented as being more Shepard's equal in terms of skills, knowledge and ability,  but he's also shown as Miranda's equal.  it's really a joy to watch/read the battle of wits that he and Miranda engage in and  to watch him struggle with his feelings amidst all the flashbakcs. akg's story is funny and eloquent.  I think she's done a fine job of capturing the characters.  So I don't see it as Kaidan becoming more badass, but as a window into the Kaidan we always knew we had on our team. ;)

Kaidan is badass but in away completely opposite of (anti) heroes like Fenix from Gears of War. He is more like a Superman kind of hero. In fact if I was going to compare him to other heroes from games/comic/movies I would say one part Superman, one part Malcolm Reynolds, one part Cyclops.

In the past 30+ years we have seen the raise of the anti-hero, tortured, angry, people who will either put a bullet between your eyes or they might save you. Seeing a character like Kaidan who is an exception to that is refreshing. I do like the bad boys out there, the Gambits, the Attons, the Anders, etc. But finding characters who fit the pre-Vietnam War Hero archetype is very nice.

I would very much enjoy seeing Kaidan knock someone on their ass in ME3. And whoever he does it to will probably very well dissever it. I guess my point being, Kaidan is a capable fighter and just a bad ass as Garrus, Jack, Zaeed, Thane, etc without the angst, the vengeance, the anger, and whatnot. Sometimes Shepard needs someone who doesn't have a thousand problems of their own. Sometimes Shepard is the one needing to be taken care of.

So I started reading Manipulations last night because the posts peeked my curiosity.  I tend to stay away from fanfic involving characters Bioware is still developing.  Mostly, I would hate to really enjoy Kaidan in Manipulations and Bioware takes the character down another path and I get disappointed.  I will probably read more after ME3 is done.

Anyway, I am only up to Chapter 5 but so far I am liking the hardened Kaidan.  It is definitely believable with everything he has gone through.  I do agree with Kurt though, I hope Kaidan is not changed too much.  I worry about the path Bioware is going to take the Kaidan down.  I mean Liara went from nerdy little scientist to I am going to kill the Shadow Broker.

I think we all agree we love Kaidan for his mild mannered, level headed attitude.  If he becomes too hostile, I personally will be disappointed.

I'm probably in a minority, but I really don't like Manipulations. or its a well written story, but I don't like the way the relationship is handled, it feels extremely dishonest to me, all these games. maybe its just me, but I felt like Kaidan wasn't the kind of person to tolerate games or even stay in love with a person who constantly plays them, manipulates him like that. Kaidna has already changed somewhat. since we have to accept Horizon as canon, we see him get less acceptign, more rigid in his believes and values. Kaidan we knew in ME1 is not coming back.

what scares me though is that he might be turned into Anders, that they might make him tortured etc, to make him more "interesting" :/

SHHH DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS  :crying:

I worry about this a lot, how he'll be portrayed if he does come back in any capacity larger than a cameo in ME3.  I've always said I'll take what I can get, but if he is butchered for the sake of making him more popular, I'll be really sad.  I do believe that the writers "got" why people who did like him, liked him.  I just don't know if the same writers will be working on ME3, or if new writers will care about that.

Yeah, I will be lapping up any spoilers that come out as soon as possible, before ME3 is released.  We'll have to start being very careful in this thread, but I want to know as much as possible before getting my poor nerdy-gamer-girl heart broken again.

Yes, the way DA2 handled returning characters/cameos makes me glad DA and ME have two seperate teams..if that's still the case ;) I expect Kaidan as a character to change, but hopefully not because his writer changed, but as a natural growth of character over the years. A change that's subtle but still leaves the character we know intact so to speak. I can imagine Kaidan's views changing over the years on certain subjects, I can totally see him having a bit of an edge (without changing him into some badass) but imo he already had that. (like his response to Udina in ME1)
I think it will be interesting/fun/amazing/rewarding/etc etc to see him in ME3 and get to know him better. As in the deeper layers of his personality since we got the chitchat out of the way in ME1 ;) If we're given that chance and can take him along as a squadmate. (and hopefully we'll see a return of partybanter in ME3)

I hadn't really thought about it that way and I agree.  I had some issues with the way Shepard was portrayed in the story.  I thought maybe it was because I could never see any of my Shepards as a manipulative B****.  I am going to keep reading because I have already started.

If they make Kaidan pull an Anders, I will officially be done with Bioware.

For how many decades of fanart in general I've seen with the clear majority of it either being atrocious or just crappy, from what I've seen of the Kaidan fanwork, it's clearly miles above most fanart with quality.  I normally don't have fanart faves beyond what's the most so bad it's silly, but images like the quoted, just...wow...

Cases like that, I love being proved wrong about something.
