I firmly believe there can/will be a happy ending in the trilogy unless you really screw things up in both ME2 and 3. Why? Because you technically did too much dying already. Start of ME2, end of ME2 and in Arrival if you want to see the VS for a split second
Yes there are those who think it will have a dramatic effect to not have a happy ending...to them I just say, mess up the suicide mission and low and behold, you be dead now...*plays the worlds smallest violin*..j/k

I don't believe we'll get the sacrifice your LI thing, I mean we don't need another Virmire. But I do believe they might kill off someone dear to us that's an established character. Don't kill me for saying this but as an example: Joker flying the Normandy into Harbinger.
Something like that....and no I don't wanna kill off anybody...I'm a 'save them all, yes even the smelly ones' type of girl

I totally am the same way! I don't like Jack but I busted my butt to make sure she didn't die even though she wasn't loyal on my first playthrough!

Does anyone else think it's weird that at the end of ME2, if squadmates weren't loyal, they couldn't perform their jobs in the suicide mission? I get that it's punishing you for not getting their loyalty, but it's not Shepard who dies, it's them. Don't they still care about their own safety? lol just a thought.

Back onto the topic of Kaidan, I doubt the LI will have to be sacrificed in the end. If it did happen, they better make it good.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not the mako! whoever said the makos coming back i so hope your wrong, i couldn't drive that damn thing for love nor money, i always ended up getting out the damn thing to kill stuff (yeah i use cheats ), tbh i'm amazed Kaidan didn't slap my shep and take the wheel, the amount of times i flipped it into and over everything!

OT: i loved all the me2 squaddies, espec Jack, there was soo many times on my first playthrough that i'd be getting really creeped out and she'd come thundering past and shockwave everything with a line like 'Die b**ch'. Although Kasumi still gets the highest points for my first meeting of Harbinger taking over a collector and doing his 'you feel this' line and then BAM Kasumi shadowstriked him dead, that made me giggle for ages

Yes, yes, yes! That's the thing I've been trying to grasp in my head for the past week or so!! Kaidan is a man of strong convictions, but in ME1, he didn't seem to like to call the shots (and as such a military guy, he couldn't, since Shepard outranked him). It will be AWESOME to see him on even footing with Shepard, giving him the means to, for lack of a better word, dominate.  The thought of it makes me super excited!!!

not as of now.  however, they do mention that the choices you could make will be extensive and I suppose that could extend to relationships.  I'm not 100% sure on this one,as I haven't actualy tried it myself, but I believe you can end Me2 relationships even after consumation?   letters from both Ash and Kaidan were open ended enough to suggest that you'd have to either actively renew the relationship... or end it for good.. bear in mind, this is just me theorizing, nothing of this nature has been confirmed yet.

I think "cheating" part means tough time and some wiggling needed to figure out the old vs new relationship situation.

Thank You and everyone who answered. So I guess I need wait and see for official Devs post or ME3. Well I never acctepted fact, that after Shepard death, and Kaidan's moving on and those two years in coma, also lack of possibility to officially  break up with Kaidan ( it could be done on Horizon, or as a mail answer) my Shep new relationship will means " cheating"  , but well...that's Devs decision.

Never been able to leave Kaidan behind...so I've probably  missed some of the bantar but I just couldn't help it...I liked seeing his reactions...I know one time I played renegade and on Feros I just told my squadmates to wipe everybody out...Kaidan went crazy...I don't know if it was a glitch or not but I was getting ready to attack and he just ran off shooting everybody...before I knew it I was just sitting there looking dumbfounded at the screen...don't think my Shep got to fire once.

Holy crap, I had this same issue.  It didn't matter what I was doing, I could never leave him.  I missed out on a ton of the banter and combinations just because I brought him with me everywhere.  I just knew that I'd miss some adorable thing he said if I didn't bring him with me on every single mission, even the little random world expeditions.    And he was always a massive help.  Pretty sure he saved my butt in the fight against Matriarch Benezia at least twice.  I remember getting knocked back, looked up to see one of her asari in my face, fairly certain I was about to have to start the fight over... and then witnessed that same asari get flung to some location that I never did figure out.  I guess she died there.  Kaidan was chilling right next to me, though.

With how I drive the mako, Shep should buy stock in dramamine.  Equally I think I've broken laws of physics with all the careening around.

And I agree with Kasumi being fun like that, just as fun as managing to get a dominate fired off just as Harbinger's coming up.  Makes for easy mop up with him taking down all his allies so everyone focuses on him when he's loose.

I figured it'd be something gradual. Kaidan already knows the reapers are a threat so him joining Shepard at the start is a no-brainer, but when the game progresses, there will probably be info that Cerebus is hunting Shepard down. Kaidan will want to know why and depending on Shepard's dialogue responses, there'll probably be some sort of a "I ... was wrong, Shepard" apology once he digests the information. =p Hot make-up sex to ensue before the final mission.

For some reason ever since I found out that EDI was made from technology from Sovereign I wondered if she and the Normandy weren't going to play a huge role in taking down the reapers....wouldn't like seeing Joker die though and I'm kind partial to EDI too

The kind of death I was thinking about was one where they die because of the plot not because our choices. You know one of those things that no matter what you do this is the way it's going to play out like with Kaidan on Horizon...no matter how much we wanted to romance him the plot wouldn't let us.

I guess I just kinda wished that they hadn't said it was going to be darker...I kinda miss the citadel and all the wonder of seeing it for the first time( to me as far as a game goes ME1 was magic and I miss it)...but I guess with the universe possibly ending it can't be helped. Yeah, I'm not going for the tragic ending ... I plan to get a"save everybody" canon playthrough in before the ME3 release.

I didn't get the logic as to why certain ones died at certain times...Jack almost always bought it first and Miranda was extremelly hard to kill...I wonder if Miranda is a more important character to the plot in ME3 and they were trying to give her the best possible opportunity of staying alive. As for Kaidan being sacrificed...I don't think any good plot would make me like that idea unless we find out he isn't Kaidan at all...and that would be way out there as far as storyline.
