Oh, I totally agree on how you see him. But I was never comfortable with the superior/subordinate relationship. I would even go so far to say that it would be more realistic for my main Shepard to have been single in both ME 1 & 2, even if she was attracted to Kaidan, because even in crazy circumstances, she shouldn't have broken that particular rule. So I'm hoping that at least this part of the article is true.
I see what you mean. For me it was that kind of a spice in their relationship, that made it interesting. Besides, they both seemed to understand that the deeper they are into this mess with Saren, the higher the possibility they can not make it out alive. So in my rp, Shepard went for the guy she liked, and damn the consequences. They could figure it out later, but only if both of them survive.
But there are other things that make this whole Spectre thing... hard to get used to. I still may read things wrong, so forgive me my lousy explanations and the following ranting, sometimes I just can't form sentences to express what I mean. But I need to get things out of my mind.
(rant part you can skip reading, if it sounds rubbish to you)Current dispute about Shepard being Alliance. I get it that every player can interpret it in his own way, but I don't understand how, at the moment she became a Spectre, Shepard stopped being Alliance. In my game she was still using military doctrine, resources, she was respectful towards other Alliance officers, maintaining contacts -and- was aware of consequences of fraternizing. Nobody never said "Shep's a Spectre now so she can sex up anyone she wants, because she's not Alliance anymore".
Reading many posts on the forums, most players definitely believe that being a Spectre automatically made them Alliance "veterans" and they can kiss their arses. And "how they dare summon my Shepard on some idiotic trial?". Also, in similar topic on Polish section, nobody seemed to understand that being (honorably) killed in action doesn't strip you of your title or any connection to the military. In short - death on duty doesn't stop you from being a soldier. But I may be wrong - I don't know who ordered Shepard to "patrol" in the Traverse. I suck at politics too.
Kaidan is wearing Alliance uniform under the armor. IF he's a Spectre, these explanations come to my mind:
Humans of the Council greatly influenced and changed the position of a Spectre. In ME2 it felt like just a gimmick, a scary tale you could scare kids with, but nothing else. Of course I know it might be because the Council refused to support Shepard mainly because of Cerberus, but also because she was deep into the Traverse. Wait. You're basically black ops, why would they care (besides "Ah yes, Reapers")?
At the same time Vasir is a classical Spectre, which of course buries my above theory, Shepard just gets the "special treatment".
or
Making Alliance soldier a Spectre doesn't really stop him from belonging to Alliance.
or
Kaidan has a sense of duty that I don't think diminished during two years, quite the opposite. But at the same time that might make him change his way of doing things by cutting corners which he was against by now. He knows the real threat and maybe something finally pushed him towards taking any measures to obtain his goal. That would make sense considering we theorized about him being "hardened" after Shepard's death. You can also apply that to Ashley. So, they join Spectres.
Of course there may be more, and it certainly creates interesting possibilities.
(end of the rant part)My first speculations, when I saw that uniform on him, were different. I believe he's still Alliance soldier, he has nothing to do with the Council and the Spectres, he and Shepard don't operate in the same line anymore (thus no reasons to be afraid of getting into intimate relationship), and while the reasons why he joins Shepard back may be various, making him a Spectre sounds like just adding a flashy gimmick to make VS more popular or "attractive". Looking on the forums actually makes me believe this is taking an opposite effect, so yeah, I prefer to wait for confirmation, and while there are many weird things on my mind (as you see the proof above), I can totally swallow them up and admit that I'm wrong in some places. And even accept the Spectre thing, thou I don't see it necessary for the plot.
PS: I'm confused, is it a spectre or specter... I'm going with what the Wiki says...
