Here's a rather odd question.
I joined the Mass Effect fanbase due to the sequel celebration for Dragon Age II - and thus only started playing Mass Effect 2 because that was the game I had. But, somehow, I found out about Kaidan....and the rest is history. I'm sure you all understand Posted Image

Now, I've heard that Mass Effect 3 comes out later this year, which, if I wasn't so terrible at shooting combat in this game, I might be more Posted Image about. Anyways, I heard that Kaidan/Ashley will be returning.

In my current ME2 game, since I never played ME, I had Kaidan at the beginning and stuff, but I know there's unlikely to be the romanctic dialogue and whatever since its not an import game. But could I start that romance in ME3?

QUESTION: Has anyone heard whether or not the romance for Kaidan in ME3 require an import from ME1 with a romance activated, or could they be started from scratch? Cause I might have to go buy ME1 before I get really into ME2 then to make sure I play through both games and get my desired ME3 outcome (yes, I am a complete sucker for rpg romances. I blame Bioware entirely) Posted Image

We don't know yet whether it'll be possible to start fresh with Kaidan in ME3. If you have the PC version you can almost definitely mod it eventually, so the game "thinks" you had a romance with Kaidan, if that ends up being required. Hehe.  Right now though, it's anyone's guess.

I'd also really recommend grabbing ME1. The Kaidan romance is super adorable.

I have a feeling it won't be, but just thought I'd ask. The fangirls of the romanceable characters are renowned for finding out things no-one else knows! Posted Image I think I will try to get ME1 soon anyway - maybe once I'm more used to shooter combat XD

And yeah, I've seen a couple romantic scenes on youtube (thus my sudden fangirl love for Kaidan, haha Posted Image) and Joker is totally being a ****block on purpose Posted Image

I wrote this particular fanfic in response to a whole lot of anti-Kaidan fics.

No news if he'll be newly romancible in ME3.  But... you got the PC version from that promo, yeah?  I think you can use the save editor to change the flags so that Kaidan is romanced.

I'd recommend playing ME1 anyway.  There's very little Kaidan in ME2.  ME1 Kaidan has a leading support role and you can romance him and (ymmv) the story and gameplay are better in ME1 anyhow.  (And if I'm not mistaken, it's on sale or was on sale recently.)

Plus there are a plethora of things that import into ME2 (to varying degrees) and things that might import into ME3 that make importing the save rather than starting a new game rather worth it.

And of course, Kaidan.  :wizard:

Also, ME1 is a lot less... shooter-y in some ways. This is especially true if you play a Vanguard or an adept, though you can end up pretty squishy then. There was a funny story earlier in this thread about someone who played an adept with Kaidan and Liara as their main party members. Everything just hovered in the air from all the lifts and throws, so nothing ever touched them.

Oh yeah, I play most games on the PC - I was thinking about buying it anyway, which I think is the main reason I've stalled so much in playing ME2. My younger brother is easily halfway through (being as evil as he possibly can, lol) whereas I haven't even left Omega yet - and that was the first place I went to, haha.

I would attempt to change the game settings to think I had romanced Kaidan, but I'm not too good with computers. It took me about two hours and a lot of help from my dad to get around that damned awc.dll error in order to start playing it in the first place! Posted Image (and then had to do it again two days later on a different computer. Such rage)
I don't really want to get through ME2 and then have to go back and play both again just to import a character across. I tend to import my first characters. Buying ME1 it is! (bioware already owns my soul, what's a few more dollars XD).
Better story? Better gameplay? Oh, you had me at Kaidan  Posted Image

Well, since you're on PC, I would say go to www.masseffectsaves.com to download a Kaidan romanced character for play in ME2, but I think it's a good idea to play through ME1, even though the gameplay will feel funny after the second game. You'll have a better feel for the Mass Effect storyline, and characters, though, if you experience the whole thing yourself.

I'm not going to say the gameplay is better, just less focused on typical "shooting." There are some clunkiness factors, I'm not going to lie, but the less-shooty characters felt cooler to me in ME1. (Also, it's easier to adapt from ME1 to ME2 than from ME2 to ME1, for many reasons that this isn't the thread for, Hehe.)

And Kaidan is a definite reason to get it. It's still one of the best Bioware romances I've seen, there are moments during it where I actually find myself blushing, like a sap.

Less shooting? Oh yay. I was told adepts were like the "mages" of the game, and so that's who I'd picked for ME2. The less shooting I have to deal with, the more likely Shepard makes it out alive, haha. (Mages/adepts might be squishable, but they also have a much higher chance of making enemies squishable if I'm controlling them!)

Like I said, I haven't played ME2 much so I'm sure it wouldn't be too jarring for me to go backwards. Still getting used to using the mouse as the camera rather than just the keyboard - curse you and your addictiveness, DA2!

I'm not an expert shooter either, but once your Shepard level up a few times, things get much better.

The combat in ME1 isn't better, in fact, in two it's much better and easier to handle, less clunkiness...etc. But, the game is definitely better. I'm into the series for the plot and the characters and ME1 is no where near comparable to ME2.

That's why Hudson was saying they're switching back to the ME1 method of story telling, let's hope they can make it happen and that the game could be as good as the first one :D

Kaidan is straight in 1 and straight in 2, why the hell would they make him bi in 3.  They can do that with other characters.  I wasn't happy when they did it in DA2.  It's unnecessary to ruin a character by making him all of a sudden gay.  I am not anti gay.  I am anti Kaidan gay.

Unless my family members who are bi have been doing it wrong, it's normal for a bi person to go through times in thier life preferring one gender over another.  So it would fit for a theoretical bi Kaidan.

However after experiencing the romance dialogs in ME2 and hearing the assorted kvetching about DA2's handling of things, I really don't have confidence in Bioware's handling this in a competent manner.

Not to tell you what to do. But I'd suggest playing through (or heck just watching youtube vids) of the romances yourself so you can draw your own conclusions. (I say this as a completely neutral party). I personally found them to be fine. (If a little scarce on content but in DA2 everything was scarce on content (hello repeating maps.

And with that have a nice day.

And yes Kaidan is very sexy <3

I do have other issues with the DA franchise so I've not bothered with further purchases on anything past DA:O.  I do wish things had been otherwise.  However, my fiance did buy DA2 with a crap ton of DLC and from watching his screen, so far I've not really been impressed though he's enjoying the game very much.  I did peruse the DA2 forums just to read around for the hell of it and saw there were some complaints.

Combined, I just don't think the writers could handle it well though then again they might prove me wrong if they do go that route.

Ah that's understandable. But I really wouldn't use the forums for judgement. Too many fanboys and too many trolls. *is a fangirl*

Yeah I doubt it as well. ME devs haven't even mastered friendship dialogue. :pinched:  My dude Hawke *wanted* to be bros wth Kaidan, Garrus and the like but they got such scraps of dialogue. (And ME2 was even worse because I didn't get the usual codex dump). <_<

Only characters Shepard had decent convos with were Mordin, Samara (who was sort of a codex dump) Thane (same as Samara) and Legion. Everyone else I kept feeling I got blocked off from the rest of their development because I didn't want to romance them. :(

What Fire and Teen said. At the least I would do what Teen said and download a save, then mod Shepard to look like your Shepard... but like Fire said... If you want your choices to count... get it and play it yourself... believe me.... It's worth it, He's worth it!!!!

For me a speed run of ME1 is a lot of abusing the edit console for xp and credits.  I only bother with the plot planets and when I import the save to ME2, I do the editor trick to flesh out the save more with a reimport.  Overall it's not pretty but it works.

Initially, both Kaidan and Ashley were suppose to be romancable in ME1 and some time after the dialogue had been recorded, Bioware changed their minds.

This still irritates me occassionally.

I am hoping for a gay relationship option in ME3. It'd be better, in my opinion, if Kaidan was one of the possibilities.

Most places have ME1 on greatest hits right now, making it about $19 or so. I know Steam has it for $19. To get the full story and experience of ME, it is definitely worth the buy.

And if you muck around with the save edits, you can get the same sex romance though it does have some dialog hiccups and the bedroom scene flips to the het version before reverting in ME1.  Using the gibbed editor you can push it through in ME2.

The only problem with Steam is that my younger brother and I both play (and I'm not buying two copies!), and it would get a little annoying since we both want to play at the same time - we had enough trouble organising DA2 on steam together, haha.

I'm an Aussie, but I don't know what deals are on at the moment - havent been to the gameshops in awhile. Can usually find it on ebay for $20 or so too. I'll see how I go! I will definitely get it eventually though - in the meantime, need to resist playing ME2 since I'll just have to replay after using the import, haha.
