I'll probably be lynched for saying this but in my mind ME2 would be better without the romance options. They're a little trite as you've all said and not really integral to the plot.
I love Garrus to bits but I'm perfectly happy with him and my Sheps being best friends. I romanced him once to see how it went and while it was sweet, it was very shallow. The time span on ME2 seems a lot shorter than ME1 to me - maybe that's why.
Eh, anyway my opinion for what its worth.
I kind of feel the same way, after I dunno how many play throughs I still do not have the paramour achievement for ME2. For 2 reasons, 1: I have no idea which one I want, none of them stand out any more then the others. Maybe Thane I guess, I'm a sucker for tragedies and the whole 6 months to live is pretty tragic. 2: I haven't been able to get through ME1 without romancing Kaidan. It's not that he ninja-romances me, it's cause I can't help myself. I'm weak... Also I will not, can not cheat on Kaidan.

A lot of people think they are going to do
away with all squadmates as well, but I don't see that happening either.
It would just be more work and nullify a large part of ME2.
That doesn't make any sense, between ME1 and ME2 you have 15 squadmates! Given you might have accidently got most of them killed. Why I love ME1 story a bit more then ME2 story was you only spent maybe an hour recruiting your team. And you only recruitied as you went through the story. ME1 was about chasing Saren, ME2 was about recruiting and building alliances to stop the Collectors and most likely beyond.
