I doubt it would cost you a squadmate. dialogue possibly, if you move on, there might be some tension, but they will still work with you. I've said it before, but I guess I'll say it again - I cannot blame Kaidan and Ashley for not trusting me, heck my Shepards (most of them anyways) weren't precisely sure themselves if Cerberus weren't influencing them in some insidious ways. I was surprised, and honestly a bit weary that Garrus and Tali, just followed along, with no doubts. Joker- he just wants to fly, he was never an alliance man, he is a pilot first and foremost. Dr. Chakwas? she's there for Joker as much as for you - she says as much. Garrus and Tali? gratitude? something? to be honest, I lost a bit of my trust in them, because they went along far too easily.. oh I'm sure they will back me up, no matter what, but I can no longer trust them to tell my Shepards if they go to far. then again, unlike Kaidan or Ash - Garrus didn't exactly have anywhere else to go and Tali? lesser of 2 evils - Admiralty board sending her on all those suicidal missions for no good purpose that she could see, making her responsible for the loss of so many quarians and here's Shepard, a leader who's doing something that might benefit the entire Galaxy - and her Idol. its part of what I liked about Kaidan/Ash. they look up to you, but unlike Garrus and Tali - they never idolize you. ANd unlike Garrus/Tali - they were on a mission of their own and it obviously involved investigating Cerberus. I wouldn't be surprised if they had uncovered a few extra titbits that TIM wasn't forthcoming with - I do still wonder about that tip they got, they had thought that Cerberus was behind abductions and judging by our prior experiences with Cerberus, despite what Mordin says - they didn't hesitate using aliens to achieve their goals before.

I have no doubt that there will be an option to break up formally (as if moving on didn't already do that), and I think the most conflict we'd get is something like confrontation scene in ME1 - in case player decides to string VS and new lover along at the same time. judging by information released so far, I doubt it will affect actual mission in any way - only personal relationships with npc's. Romances have always been optional side story, so unlike loyalty mission they shouldn't make any difference in whom you could recruit or main storyline choices you could make. Plus, developers were so insistent that gamers try out new romances, for them to punish so many players for merely going along with their suggestions? nyaaaaah

This ^

I doubt we will get a "you cheated on Kaidan so the universe dies" kind of consequence. But losing dialogue and tension especially if you try to play the both of them, is quite possible. I wonder how they are going to handle the LIs who are not aboard. They have already confirmed that Jacob will not be returning as a squadmate but is it possible for him to still be aboard the Normandy as a crewmember?

I still haven't be able to play a 'cheating' Shepard. I plan to and my resolve is strong up until the point I head into Shepard's quarters and see his picture.

Personally, I'd like it if the consequence for "cheating" wasn't a direct punishment (or, for that matter, reward), but more of an indirect coincidence type thing. Maybe a particular character would be in a certain place at a certain time depending on whether or not they were still in a relationship with Shepard, and would end up having (or not having) an effect on an unfolding plot as a result. Not necessarily something that could be foreseen, just the way things turn out.

Eh, personally I am much more likely to trust Kaidan/Ashley than Tali, Garrus, Joker or Chakwas in ME3, *because* they had critical thinking skills and good judgement, when everyone, including Shepard, lacked those qualities in ME2. I'm not crazy about the writing in the Horizon scene, but the sentiment that the Virmire Survivor expressed was exactly how I feel as a player. So that definitely contributes to my reasons for never getting the Paramour achievement, and feeling so strongly that Ashley and Kaidan deserve recognition in ME3.

I'm not worried about the consequences for "cheating", because they won't apply to any of my Shepards, but I really doubt that the devs are going to do anything drastic to punish players for enjoying the ME2 romances. I wouldn't worry about it, judging from how it worked in ME1. It will probably a "choose between us" scene again.

ahh i was lazy with reading that, explains why i didn't see it.
Hope they're wrong though i always liked Jacob, heh he always said something i didn't expect. Mind you i'm greedy, i want the all the team from ME1 back as squaddies and all the team from ME2 to be squaddies. Mind you i suppose for getting Kaidan back i don't mind loosing one or two of the ME2 team...

I hope it's all right to ask this here:

Why exactly is Kaidan's name "Kaidan Alenko"?

Doesn't sound like an usual name for an earthborn like him, and I don't know of any ethnicity that uses that kind of name.

We've talked about this in the past; Kaidan means "ghost story" in Japanese, it could also be related to the arabic Kaiden which means "warrior".  Alenko is a Eastern European surname (I think Ukrainian?).  I think the writers wanted to give him a name that could be seen as indicative of blended nationalities.

yeah!

actually, given how popular Kaden, Kaiden, Kayden, Jayden, Jaiden, etc. names are right now for little boys (seriously, little kaidan tots are everywhere in the states), I took it to be a name that, almost 200 years from now, would almost be old-fashioned. I tink that the name "Kaidan" in the 2160's would be like naming a boy Arthur or Henry or Charles - something very solid and antique-sounding.

That was my take, anyhow. As for the alenko, it sounds not-Canadian. and since I take it that Kaidan was either born Canadian or moved there (combo of convo about dad + his clearly American accent in the English version), I took it that they were trying to imply some sort of exotic-esque ancestry.

vs. Ash, of course, whose name sounds to be about as melting-pot generic American as they come. Ash may be a spacer, but she strikes me as very American in some ways. but mebbe that's just me, cause she reminds me of a lot of military girls i know.

Yeah at least not Greek (I am Greek and it doesn't seem like a greek name)

I also looked it up online and according to THIS:
 Name:                        Meaning:                                            Gender:       Origin:
Kaden                         Fighter                                                   M              American

Kadin                           Companion                                           U              Arabic

Yes yes I know its not the full name Kaidan but its interesting nontheless

EDIT: U = Unisex

I think she meant the looks, not the name.  In looks, I agree that Kaidan seems like he has a bit of mediterranean in him.

Oops...sorry then ....yes, he has a certain mediterranean look....plenty of dark hair, dark skin men around here (tho the eyes look more as Asian to me)
If only i knew if he has modeled after a real person........being mediterranean would also make my job of searching him easier ^_^

I am pretty sure he is...based on the fact that Ashley Williams was modeled after this person in the screenshot below (at the very right)

Oh and you can see Kaidan's mesh there too.  Seems Bioware is being tight lipped as to who the models are for VS.  I haven't found anything searching the forums.
