I highly doubt he was a Spectre but being observed as one, yes. It would be quite possible that somebody like Nhilus was lurking in the shadows watching every Kaidans step on Horizon (maybe even saved him from Collectors) wich would probably evenmoreso justify Kaidans accusations made towards Shepy... as he is watched.

Ah yeah, being tested for possible Spectre-ness does sound more likely. But I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that he was already a Spectre back on Horizon. You never know, right? xD I think his accusations were heartfelt though, not just a little show he put up just in case a Spectre was watching. He seems too honest to do something like that imo.


By the way, I've been meaning to ask for some time now... What is Kaidan like when romanced in Renegade? How different is a Renegade Kaidan from a Paragon Kaidan? It surprised me when I found out that he acts differently depending on how you interact with him.

Oh, please dont get me wrong, I totaly believe that his accusations were heartfelt, no doubt about it, nothing "played" there from his side but I dont know, I just have this annoying feeling that Kaidan and Shepy were watch (and not only by the Shepys companions). Something Is Rotten in the Milky Way!  It is probably just my imagination going berserk because of all the waiting that we will have to endure.

...I just cant bring myself to allow any of my Shepys "making" Kaidan renegadish...

Oops. Sorry if I misunderstood what you said. xD I can attest to imaginations running wild with all this waiting arrrrgh. Can someone remind me why it isn't 2012 yet?

I can't do it with my femShep... I just can't. >__< And from what I've been reading you'll need a femShep to turn him Renegade - he acts the same way regardless of what you do with manShep (is this true?). I suppose I'll need to suck it up and dish out a Renegade run some time to see for myself.

I figured it was Russian as well, though my one friend swears up and down that it's a Ukrainian surname, but that can also be his swinging about his ancestry pride.

Ahhh interesting. It's pointed out a lot in the ME novels that all humans are now complete mixes of cultures and backgrounds. While some may obviously lean towards one in particular more then another most have traits of many ethnicities. 

I always figured Kaidan to have a mix of Japanese (his eyes, his first name? Googled it, guess not.. Kaidan in Japanese means supernatural tale... ) and some Latino background because of his profile. But Russian is also plausible.

My Paragon Shep would never do that, but I think I figured out why she's been getting herself wasted at the citadel bars... Trying to figure out who lil Miss Doc is and hoping to let her know who's got a claim on Alenko. Except there's no way she'll find out but she doesn't care because maybe she'll bump into Kaidan himself..

I hope the "mixed" part is still somewhat true, even if he's got predominantly Russian from one side or the other.  For some reason, I really enjoyed the idea of everyone being blended around the edges.

Kaidan could still be a Japanese loanword-type name from a wellmeaning parent trying to reconnect with roots a couple of generations away... or because it sounded cool.  It's pronounced differently in Japanese, though.  (It could also be any of the other Kaidan names we've dug up.)

According to wikipedia (and a Ukranian person I know), the "enko" part of the surname is is originally from the Ukraine...but it's not much of a stretch to have a Russian with that surname too.

I'm oddly excited that someone acknowledged that Kaidan even *has* a background beyond BAaT.  Learning about his family's roots would be awesome, although I don't think they really need to do more family related party member missions this time around.  I know it's an easy way to get to know the characters, but we got too much of it in ME2.

I look at it as if I've got a plain first name, Japanese middle name and an Italian surname in this era while being an ethnic mix of Italian, Sicilian, Prussian, Polish and Ethiopian, then anything's even more possible in the time of Mass Effect.

So he can be from Russia and have Ukraine roots with the surname. In Russia You can find mix of most european and asian attributes.

@Renegaded Kaidan: I just got through with a playthrough with my Renegon character Kitty who changed his views on things a big. Basically, he doesn't "go bad" or anything. His opinions just tend to be more humans-first and more of an anti-alien bias than the paragon Kaidan would express. This mainly comes through in scenes like at the locker in lock-down and pre-Ilos. However, I had him and Wrex on my team and since he's more paragon to Wrex, Kaidan in smaller missions would still have the paragon lines.
I don't really like seeing Kaidan anti-alien. I like that despite his experiences with Vernuus, he still liked aliens on the whole and was able to appreciate that that one Turian was a jerk rather than hating the whole race for what was done to him. But it was interesting to see and worth doing once--just like playing as a mShep is worth playing once since you get some different dialogue from Kaidan with mShep than you would with a Kaidan who's smitten with femShep.
