Wow. I've apparentely missed a lot of Kaidan dialogue.  Don't recall this. :S

You have to push him to the edge of renegade without actually charming/intimidating him, then apologize before going too far.  I figure most people either don't take renegade options with him or go all the way.

On a note, I'm currently stalking Game Trailers 'cause they have live E3 steaming with Mass Effect 3 news @ 1:30PDT (3:30 CST for me ;_; ) ... hoping they show Kaidan! >.<
