It's been a while since I've been on here! Tried to keep up with all the polls posted, but haven't really had time to sit down and write something lately

And that might not change too much with my new project, but ths question was too good to resist.

I only have one canon Shepard, Olivia Shepard (though I do play as other Shepards for fun or to see other parts of the story), has a variety of reasons for why she's with Kaidan. She's a colonist // war hero infiltrator paragade.
Prior to ME1, she was married to her career, very focused. Once given a goal, she pursued it almost single-mindedly. She didn't consciously avoid relationships with people, but neither did she go out of her way to make friends. The only real friend she's ever had was Captain Anderson (mentioned briefly in "Memories"). She was never opposed to the idea of love, but assumed that she'd either never find it or she'd be killed before she could.
Before boarding the Normandy for the first time, she'd read up on all of the crew, wanting to familiarize herself with her staff and, more importantly, her ground team. She'd never worked with a biotic before (especially and L2) and was cautious about. So she was curious about the LT, and her first meeting with him went was differently than expected. For one thing, he wasn't the scary monster she half-heartedly expected after reading media reports (and some confidential reports) about them. More than that though, she was surprised by the steadfast calm and dry humor he suppled. Kaidan turned out to be "Mr. Perfect" to put it in a corny way and that surprised her the most because it was something she wasn't expecting.
Following the mission on Eden Prime, she expected to be cut loose from Anderson's crew, especially considering her candidacy for the Spectres and the fact that Anderson was taken off the investigation but allowed her the use of his crew. She allowed herself to indulge in the emotions she was feeling towards the Lieutenant, examing her actions on Eden Prime -- pulling him away from the beacon. She doesn't doubt that what she did was right, but she's unsure that her motives were as... clear cut as "he's on my team." She's surprised to find that she is attracted to him. He's easy to talk to and she's immediately comfortable around him. He projects an aura of rockhard steadfastness and she trusts him with her life. She know he always has her six.
Over the events of ME1, her attraction blossoms into full-blown love and finds she doesn't want to resist it, regardless of the regs. It's beautiful, it's unexpected, and it's something she stopped actively pursuing a long time ago. She realizes it's something she never wants to lose and would do anything to keep. Like Mordin, she uses him as her "small picture" for fighting to save the galaxy.
