My attempts to articulate my irritation/anger/depression at that comic and Kaidan's description are an utter fail. Slamming my head against my desk does not alleviate the pain.
If that is Mac Walters perception of Kaidan then all my hopes for any VS DLC and ME3 have just died. I have an urge to write a fic where a character named Mack Walters-Chudson who has only a blatant resemblance to any living or dead person connected to ME is vilified. In Phoenix Armor.
Oh, and the whole pseudo film noir/hard-boiled detective narrative style of the comic was an utter fail for me. It made Shepard sound like a complete jerk.
My two cents on the thread title change to add "The Kid"...not a fan. There are already so many misconceptions out there about Kaidan I'd rather not reinforce them. Or in any way validate Mac Walters' shoddy mistaken impression that Kaidan is Jenkins.
Great post, Jaer.
And a fic about a 'Mack Walters-Chudson'?

There are good writers working for BioWare and with the ME team. I have no idea how all that talent keeps consistently churning out dreck for ME2 in relation to the world and characters they set up in ME1. It's mind boggling. No one writes junk on purpose, after all.
I still hope they'll tie it together better than we expect in ME3, but I'm already planning on ways to improve the story in my head afterwards. Because I'm really starting to think it'll need it.
So LfW part 2?
No matter what happens in ME3 I know I've at least given one of my Shepards a happy ending via fic.

I completely agree with what Jaer said and I'd also love to see that fic written.

I don't think we take ourselves too seriously here, most of the time, but I also think that for any hetero male the KAST is the scariest thread on the BSN so I have great fears they'd see "The Kid" in the thread title and think we love it without bothering to read the actual thread comments on it.
As a hetero male, I don't understand that at all.
KAST is one of the more enjoyable threads on the BSN.

I like getting the male perspective POVs on Kaidan, so it wasn't intended as an insult. In fact, I wish we had more of them. I see comments every so often that Kaidan is a 'bro' and would love to pick apart the thought process behind what makes him so identifiable to some. What makes him a bromance to some and a 'whiney Carth clone' to others.

LMAO that's exactly the impression I've gotten.
Shep: Uhh... well this is awkward.
Kaidan: Yep.
Shep: So, why are you naked and walking around the ship?
Kaidan: Out of towels.
Shep: Same.
Kaidan: So.... *stares at the wall*
Shep: It's cold here.

In my case, I think the fact that he's the only squad member who was there since the beginning had to do something with it.
Also, there's the fact that as the "human" squad members, I feel he and Ash are easier to relate to. It particularly shows when exploring the Citadel for the first time. I get the feeling of actually being in the same boat as Ash and Kaidan, which is exactly what I needed the very first time I was experiencing the ME universe. Being able to relate to them easily is also one of the reasons I prefer the Ash romance for my male Shep over the Liara romance.
As is the case with Ash, I feel like my Shepard can also rely on Kaidan for honest feedback on both the state of the crew, and the mission. I feel as though some of the alien squadmembers are either too divorced from the human crew to give real feedback, or that they "idolize" Shepard too much to advocate any honest opinion that might differ from Shepard's.
Finally, Kaidan reminds me a lot more of some of the guy friends I have in real life. I think someone on here suggested that some guys may have a problem with him because he's not the "go out and start a bar fight" type, but that's really more the kind of person I prefer to hang out with. He reminds me of a number of friends I had in college and from when I interned on Capitol Hill.
Like with my own friends, I could see how during a night out on the town with him, the conversation could easily vary between both serious and silly topics, and still be interesting no matter what.

Perhaps I'll steal Diana Shepard and the A/U Sia and I were thinking about before we got distracted by The Shepard Project?
Though, Ella and Kaidan are pretty cute together too, maybe I'll just encourage the Multiple-Personality-Disorder a bit...

@Shenzi: Well, Joker has completely stolen Ella away from Kaidan, so I'll need to make him a new Shepard, rather than relegating him to being an alternate. (All my current femSheps have multiple playthroughs, which is making them rather schizophrenic.) But yes, if ME3 is not thrilling, I will definitely retell it with a romance focus.

I know everyone here loves to discuss Horizon ad nauseum, but mainly it's from a romance perspective. I'm guessing you have few, if any, saves where Kaidan surivies Virimire since you romance Ashley...not a criticism, I'd expect nothing less...so I'm curious about Horizon from a bromance POV, if you've either played it or YouTubed it.DWH1982 wrote...

You're right. They're kind of like "Uh..."
Anyways as a girl who has a dude Shep Kaidan on Horizon is...odd. It has an odd tone to it if you're male and his body language is really...really weird.
Then again my preferred shep is dudeshepxkaidan so maybe that's why.
Plus the "Losing you....was like losing a limb."
...Yeah....I'll be in my bunk.

I don't think I've ever seen Kaidan on Horizon, to be honest. All of my Shepards end up romancing Ash, even when I start the game intending to do otherwise. And Horizon was so bad with Ash that I can't bring myself to watch it with Kaidan, not even on You Tube. I fault Bioware for writing it poorly, and not providing decent enough dialogue for both Shepard and the VS.
I will say that regardless of whoever the VS is, I think their anger at Shepard for working with Cerberus is justified. I despise Cerberus. I lost a little respect for Shepard myself when I realized there was no option for telling Miranda/Jacob to screw off and try to go it alone.
One of the other threads has a "OMG, I hate the Alliance because the VS overreacts when he/she realizes you're working for Cerberus" thing going. It's depressing. I wonder if those people paid any attention at all to what Cerberus did in ME1: The dead marines, the experiments on husks and creepers, keeping Toombs alive for years to use him as a lab rat, executing Admiral Kohoku without a second thought, and on and on.
If my loved one showed up after two years, working for an organization like that, I think I would have reacted much the same way that Kaidan/Ash does.

Horizon is far easier when VS is not romanced - so all the feeling may be summed up in "Oh, Kaidan's alive. Good. I mean, really good to have a person not involved in all those Cerberus plans. Good luck, bro!"JaerWolfe wrote...
