I think the problem with ME2 was there were too many characters. I just felt like I was running around doing favors rather than actually dealing with the reapers. It would be ok if there were just a couple and they related to the collectors, but usually it was just "my sister, my son, my father, wah!" As such most of the characters weren't even developed that far and I really didn't connect with any of them. And the actual story was thrown in the background so my Shepard could do everyone else's chores.



There was no give and take. There was just give, give, give, final mission. The best part about ME2 was the beginning and the end, but somewhere in between it went all wrong. I played it once and I had no desire to play it again unlike ME1 where I played it over and over until I get every last line of dialogue.



Although while it's a mediocre Bioware game, compared to every other developer, it's still at the top for me. All Bioware games sit at the very top of my list and thus I tend to criticize them more when they don't turn out well.

I see what you did there.    That said, I understand that particular dimension isn't everything...  And I've seen so much much emphasis on it in bad fanfic that at this stage I find any portrayals of a male LI as Joe Average in this respect quite refreshing!  But I'll say no more for the sake of keeping the thread relatively clean.  (In spite of chocolate-covered Kaidan rendering such cleanliness unlikely.  Hey, I can try!)

On the subject of bad fanfic, generally: I have thankfully read almost no such fanfic related to Kaidan.  In fact, the writers who focus on him as a character have actually deepened my appreciation of the subtlty and depth of Kaidan's character.  At times, I wonder how much the character I like so much is Bioware's anymore, and how much of it is the work of Sinvraal and the rest of ye.  (Even though ye do keep faithful to the original character rather than rewriting him according to superficial preferences as a bad fic writer would, so many wonderful little details are added in good Kaidan fics that at this stage they're part of what I think of when I think of him.)

I don't know... I still get the feeling Sturgeon's Law applies. Then again, I make it a habit of seeking out badfic. I'm a glutton for punishment.

On the subject of fanfiction; I only really started reading Mass Effect fan fic before ME2 came out and after I found out that Kaidan wouldn't be a party member this time around...somehow it eased the blow, but at the same time, it made me even sadder when ME2 came out and I saw the Horizon scene. Fanfiction definitely intensified my fangirling when it came to Kaidan, along with wanting him back in ME3.



I guess it's true that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Sigh.

Too true. 

On the other hand, our years of deprivation have immersed us in the roleplaying experience of Kaidan and Shepard's separation.  That's right.  Method acting, Bioware-style.

Despite knowing he wouldn't be a squadmember, I sincerely hoped and even secretely believed he would have a presence throughout the game. Like Kaidan being abducted by the Collectors, THAT kind of presence...there's no extra screentime while you play ME2, no contact with him...but the knowledge would add a tension to the game it lacks now. I really, really thought Kaidan would either be the liaison already by giving you intell etc (through lovely VO messages) or something like that.
But I also expected the story to carry through a bit more, the aftermath part of ME1....so um...yeah

The fanfics and art tell the story ME2 didn't....I love it all <3

After my first playthrough and realizing that my Shepard would meet him only on Horizon, I lost in my second playthrough a lot of motivation to move on after Horizon...Of course I finished it, too...But somehow it wasn't the same...

And I really enjoy the fanfics and art, too...and Jho, Your art is my favorite I love your pics dearly and I doubt I would ever get tired to look at them  <3

Aw, thank you. You guys are always so supportive, it tickles my muse to be more productive

I play ME2 with a good dose of detachement now after Horizon, I'm used to seeing my Shepard miserable and alone by now I guess. Heck if anything, the lack of Kaidan makes my Shepard more renegade at times. She's taking her frustration out on random people. The verse would be better off by returning Kaidan to her....really.

I love seeing the boost in Kaidan artwork since ME2 and fics ofcourse, but it's nice to browse DA without just seeing piles of piles of anti-Kaidan pieces. We're on our way to balance the scale at least

To avoid disappointment in ME3 I will import my first playthrough character, a renegade FemShep who saved Kaidan but no romance - so ME2 wasn't so much of a shock to her system. She stayed single - the compelling LIs compelled her to celibacy! In this way if there is a major meltdown in plot I can decide whether or not to import my Kaidan romance to ME3. Thank the gods for Fanfic in the meantime - and maybe afterwards as well.

My canon and favorite Shepard is more renegade,too, because of all the frustration and missing her Kaidan...*pouts*...and when she doesn't get her Kaidan back...she might strike and let the Reapers take over the world...oh. well, maybe not...since she wouldn't want Kaidan and innocents to get hurt...



I tried to play one playthrough without romancing Kaidan...I failed, I just couldn't resist him...ooops, I mean my Shepard failed...lol...not me....
