Speaking of different languages and such. I had this thought the other day, we know Kaidan's parents live in Canada which gives us the impression that Kaidan is also Canadian. French is the second language in Canada, spoken mostly in Quebec but also in Vancouver metro area. So my question is, can Kaidan speak french?

The books and codex explain that people who work in space speak a single trade language for their race to better help their communicators translate to aliens. But back home they would speak their native tongue.

That's something what went through my mind, too and I believe that he speaks french as well as english :)

wow...I'm on the top, that deserves a Kaidan :)

I don't recall any good up close shots of him or Ash either.

That might be because there aren't any.

So it would seem.

Not all Canadians learn French. I have quite a few Canadian friends and I know more French than they do.

I don't think it's required to learn it in grade school. I doubt he speaks it being from the West Coast and all.

I really think I'm missing something when the game or movie is dubbed. Not only because of sense (although 'anti-matter rifle Widow' was awkward), but also because limited number of local VAs (samer guy for all roles of Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves presenting Jim Raynor and Dante Sparda is superb immersion breaker).

And question about languages I asked once in another thread: does "Alenko" sounds as typical Canadian surname?

There's no more a "typical Canadian surname" than there is an American.

But Alenko is found on a search of Scottish last names.  But sounds Eastern European

I read somewhere else that listed it as Australian.

Hmmm. Time to add some possible angst to future Shenko fics, and fanfics in general, that I've never seen discussed before:

What if Shepard's comms activated when s/he got flung out into space? What if the crew heard her/his last breaths while they sat helpless in escape pods?

I actually figured that was the case: Kaidan was in a suit, Shepard was in a suit, the suits were probably linked up, so unless they lost contact over distance, so Kaidan at least got to hear Shep writhing around and watch her vitals drop.

I could be wrong.  Dunno.

That was my initial concern - from where I live Ukraine is at hand (through Strait of Kerch), so "-ko" is even more popular than typical Russian "-ov" here. I don't think, however, that it indicates on Ukrainian origin, but still interested in why developers chose this surname; that's why I asked if it's also common among Canadians and Americans

Well, Canada IS a land of immigration.

My Canadian grandparents originally came from Eastern Europe. Maybe that's the case from Kaidan's family?

Alenko is eastern euro/Russian. But kaidan loosely translates to 'ghost story' in Japanese. It refers to ancient ghost/myth stories. I have a feeling his name is "Americanized" like how some people here name their kids Angel, Starr, or Cyan.

@Catgirl789

Their comm probably doesn't broadcast continuously, kind of like a walkie-talkie. Hints why Shepard always puts her fingers to her ear when she speaks to the crew/Joker.

I don't think 'Kaidan' is Japanese, mainly because the pronunciation is wrong. It could be simply someone taking it as a name and mispronouncing it, but someone a while back found actual names (rather than loan-compound words referring to specific ceremonies pronounced differently) that were 'Kaidan' that might fit better.

Although back when I thought it might be a hack Japanese name I tried looking up 'Alenko' and ended up with a place name that I tracked to a handful of different North American lakes, but... not really surname material, that.

*shrug?* Don't listen to me, I fail at language anyway.

That is why I'm saying it is americanized or... err... canadianized? anyways, I've seen names spelled and pronounced in whatever way the parents think is right. Know a girl who's name is spelled ****head (fithers probably blocked that) but it is pronounced Sha-heed.

I can see it happening, but I can also see someone lifting the [Arabic/English/German] name as equally likely.

And, his mother was in Singapore when she was pregnant, too, which could have been because it's a space port and she was with his father at an Alliance base, or was waiting for his father to come home or to see him off, or it could have been a nationality thing.  We don't really have a lot to go on, other than the "retired to Canada" thing.

(I admit: I like the idea of Kaidan's name being a lifted Japanese word, because if nothing else having Kasumi give him hell over it would be fun.  ^_^)

If Kaidan is of Ukrainian heritage and lived in Canada, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I haven't heard the last name "Alenko," except with Kaidan, although, 'enko," names can usually be traced to Ukrainian origins.

(Speaking form a girl from Western Canada where a lot of Ukrainians emigrated to.)

It's actually required for us to learn French in grade school. It just depends on when we start learning it. In Alberta we start around grade 4 and have to continue it until grade 9. I personally had to stop there because I couldn't fit it in for high school. So it's quite possible that if Kaidan grew up in Vancouver, or anywhere in Canada, he would've had some exposure to learning French. Whether that was in school or through the ever so popular “Cereal Box French”. There’s also the chance if his parents immigrated to Canada he learned French before English. It’s required that you learn one of our official languages to obtain citizenship here.

As for Kaidan’s ancestry…Anywhere you go in Canada you'll run across many people from all over the place. Vancouver has a higher population of people coming from Asian countries so that could explain it if his parents immigrated from Singapore to Vancouver. If his surname is in fact Ukrainian and he was born in Canada, he could’ve originated from Alberta since a large part of the province’s heritage deals with Ukrainian and Eastern-European settlers. This is just my own guess because I’m from Alberta and if you aren’t somehow Ukrainian yourself you know someone who is.

(Edited for formatting the quotes incorrectly. I'll get the hang of it, eventually.)

If he grew up in Quebec, he would've had to learn French out of necessity.

Maybe his dad was Ukrainian and his mother from Singapore or China? Mixed ethnicities seem common for Earth as well.

Or, Kaidan and/or his family could've been from Saskatchewan or Manitoba as well. Not saying that people of Ukrainian descent can't be found elsewhere in Canada, but the prairie provinces have a pretty high Ukrainian population. Like

Qeilla said, if you're not Ukrainian yourself, you know somebody who is.

Canada is a lot like the US, most people here are from mixed blood. I myself have traced my heritage to strong Scott/Irish and Hungarian with some Naive American. In 200 years American and Canada will be so 'muttified' that no one will really be able to claim a single race besides saying, "Hi I'm Canadian." or "Hi I'm American."

The game basically says that blonde hair/ blue eyes are very rare unless genetically modified.
