I think it can be overlooked, depending on your dialogue choices and whether or not you use him as a teammate.  I left him on the ship during my first playthrough, so missed his occasional smartass comments, and only romanced him out of a sense of duty as a Bioware romance fangirl.  (The whole commander/subordinate thing bothered me)  In conversation, I paragon'ed him straight down the line, and as a result he always seemed dutiful, earnest and fairly dull; Mr. Nice But Not Very Interesting.

Then on the pre-Ilos scene, I randomly picked "Damn right " (or whatever the Renegade response is) to his "Is that an order, Commander?" (which rather surprised me with its playfulness), and in return got the line about this being a serious breach of protocol.  I think that's my favorite line in the game, just pure playful, sexy, fun flirtiness that made me sit bolt upright and say, "Damn, Kaidan, I don't think I've given you enough credit."

Since then he has, of course, been a constant companion and LI through all my playthroughs.    I wonder if many people simply get a bad first impression, whether it's the Carth thing (nonsense!) or that he seems boring initially, and never give him a second chance.  I'm glad I did.

I think he's definitely an acquired taste for a lot of people.  Like a good scotch.

About the bad first impression - sentinels are far from shine and glory when low-leveled (only pistol, light armour, big cooldown and not so powerful abilities), so switching for heavy hitters is rather popular. And yes, sitting on a ship Kaidan seems to hasn't got situational jokes, what a surprise.

It's always become fun when you remember things are reversed on higher levels but to that moment people already got clinged to another characters.

I tend to mix up the dialogue options, paragon, neutral, and renegade.  So long as you don't pick one of the flat out dump him options, renegade can be very fun... and neutral can be the "different option" line between similar paragon and renegade lines.

Kaidan can be a smartass all on his own, like with the deal in the wards and Ashley.

Also, did someone need a chair?

Love interest or not, I would still love Kaidan for his dry, smartass, clever humor.
I've been trying to get all his best lines uploaded to my youtube. I'm still missing the 'RTFM' line. Joker's: 'Call me paranoid' Kaidan: 'You're paranoid' Which I find oddly hilarious and makes me laugh every time. The "Certain death for some, fine for us." And a few others. Let me know if there are others you found that I might not know about and I'll try to record them and upload them.

"Get a job." My personal favorite.

You do miss out on quite a lot if one doesn't bring Kaidan along on missions.
