I'll use them both at some point, probably Varric more due to me being a fan of dwarves since my Everquest days. I'll have to see what their differences are, combat-wise.

*I also like to mix up my parties and try to fit a dwarf/elf in when I can.  All human parties gets a little redundant when there are options.

I'll personally be choosing Sabastian if archers are given better talents than the ones in DA1. I always thought they were the underpowered spec.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to mention why I'd choose Sabastian over Varric. Anyway, probably because I just find dwarves creepy (short and plump people).

Some posts below have swayed my choice, though. Sabastian may have less story aspects due to being a dlc character, though Shale from DA1 had an exceptional dialogue selection. I also hadn't thought about how Varric being the story's narrator could incline some people to put him in the party (plus Bianca looks cool in the combat vid).

Impossible to say before I get to know the characters and how the archery plays out in DA II. But based on hunch... I'd go with... Varric.

The majority of my playthroughs, Varric all the way. Mainly because I like dwarves, and he's the narrator. He looks cool and sounds cool. And again, I like dwarves. Can't stress that enough. They're awesome.
