Yeah, I only have a PCI-E slot at the moment - thinking about upgrading the Motherboard what with ME2 coming out in a few months also, but I digress.

From your information, it sounds like I can still upgrade to a GeForce 8800 (although it suggests a PCI-E 2.0 Slot). I'll probably upgrade the motherboard/cpu/RAM in the near future, but for a temprorary band-aid, will the 8800 (even hampered by my current PCI-E 1.0 slot) outperform my 8600 GT? Or should I save up and buy all those components together?

Once again, thanks for everyone's extremely helpful information!

You shouldn't spend money upgrading from a 8600 to 8800.  The tech is several years old.  The money would be better spent on more modern tech.  You should play DA on your current rig first.  Then if you are not happy upgrade.  A week from today all the performance speculation will transition to reality.  It's all educated guessing right now.  And a lot of performance is a matter of opinion, personal preference.  My 30fps is perfectly fine to me but a nightmare to others.

heh yeah, I realized that as I was typing it - be kind of silly to spend 100$ or so on fairly dated tech. Guess I will hold off and see how it goes. I've always been behind the curve by a fair margin in the hardware department, 30 fps will probably be quite acceptable to me too heh
