Mark Meer's voice as Commander Shepard rules, but a lot depends on how it sticks with Shepard's apperance. It sticks like pizza with cola on mine.

As for hale, her voice overs aren't that great. No emotions at all.

I prefer Hale's voicework here. She comes off as cheesy at times, but at the least she gets you involved, and seems like a real character.

Meer is obviously a good VA, but his work as Shepard is lacking. It really does sound like he's just reading his lines. He's very disengaged from the scenes that require some emotion on his part.

I think Meer does a good job. His voice fits the character. I just prefer Hale because I think she has better range as a voice actress. Meer too often comes across as flat. so I guess I disagree with the op. Hale is the one who tries for emotion. Her voice work in the beginning of ME2 was riveting. I'll never forget Femshep yelling at Liara to get to the airlock. Meer just doesn't do this.

I think Mark Meer is excellent at being an ****. No wait, I mean he's excellent voicing Shepard being an ****! (Big STUPID Jellyfish!)
This is why i play Renegade most of the time, his voice doesn't really fit when you're being a "goody-two shoes"... And yes the recycled "manimation" for Femshep is kind of distracting!

His voice is awesome, I think people are confusing some of his lines being badly written as his fault.

But he just acts the voice, he doesn't write the script.

It has nothing to do with Paragon and Renegade for me, it has to do with how the line is being said.

If it's supposed to be a quip or a smart ass response like "Big. Stupid. Jellyfish" or "How about goodbye" or lines that simply require you to sound like a douchebag Meer does the better job on those lines, if it's supposed to be condescending like if you're a War Hero and you take the "You think I care, cute..." option when talking to the Human Turian during Espionage Probe or really ****y lines Hale does a better job with those.

Why does everyone have to go down on JH fans? Just because we think that Hale did a better job as femShep it doesn't mean that we have to be categorized as loony feminists or fanboys. Honestly, everyone have different preferences when they play their Shepard.
I just happen to like female Shepard better, and yes I would like female Shepard to get more marketing attention.
BUT it's not because I feel that Meer does a crap job, I just happen to be very tired of Sheploo's face.

How about I illustrate the opposing viewpoint for you using your post?

Why does everyone have to go down on MM fans? Just because we think that Meer did a better job as maleShep it doesn't mean that we have to be categorized as idiots or fanboys/girls. Honestly, everyone has different preferences when they play their Shepard.

How does that work for you? :wizard:

Until recently, you were more likely to find people viciously attacking Mark Meer's performance and the people that supported him. It's only been lately that Meer's been getting some appreciation for his work on these forums without rabid Hale fans coming around and crapping on it.

I suppose because I feel he is very stiff and inexpressive and he has this tendency to ruin scenes for me. I think Hale is a bit better, but not insanely better.

Since it would be unfair to make sweeping generalizations, some lines that demonstrate what I mean with Meer:

"We couldn't have done this without you, Tali." - ME1. Wince.

"We're lucky to have someone with your skills, Kelly." - ME2. Cringe.

"Calm down, Liara, I was only joking." - ME1. Cringe/wince.

Anyone else have any cringe-worthy moments with Meer?

I'm not seeing the cringe in that dialogue. The romance dialogue with either Shepard, though? Brutal.

Also, Liara about asari sex in ME1. That broke my brain.

In Mass Effect, Meer and Hale bring their own thing to the Character of Shepard, And it works.

I think that he does a really great job. I noticed during the very first conversation of ME2, when Valentin Shepard told Liara to "go... now" there was an emotion in his voice that femshep sorely lacks.

When Peregaya Shepard told Kaiden the same thing, she just barked it as though it were an order and not a plea for her lover to get to safety.

You could speculate that this is because she's female, and the alliance's attitudes towards equality aren't much more advanced than our present day military becuase it often seems as though she's being overly agressive to compensate for something. It's not a bad thing, but i prefer Meer's softer approach to many scenes.

Really, female Shepard and male Shepard are two different characters, not different versions of the same one.

Personally I think Meer nails the Paragon lines better than Hale.. but Hale does amazing Renegade lines.

Not that either of them are bad at the opposite, just a bit better. I like both of them. I just finished both games for the first time with a Female Shepard, I was always a fan of Hales' acting and she did not disappoint here.

People complain about Mark Meer because his performance, especially in the first game is generally flat, vaguely nasal and just doesn't sound like a tough, experienced space marine should. Yes I am a Hale fanboy and damn proud of it.
