I've been working on some book icon retextures, I was going for a dragon skin look any thoughts? While messing with the retexturing I cut out some book attributes to use to make other variations of books, if anyone would like the source I can make it available on the vault or send it direct either or. I know its not much but hey its something. Image IPB

They look great - a slightly more scaly leather look to the covers than the standard.  And it's nice to have the details isolated for making our own books.

Oh, what about dynamic, part-based book icons? Cover, clasp, and decoration for the parts? Does anyone know if this could work?

If you get a chance, I'd love that source, if it includes a transparent background (although it probably isn't much effort to add a transparent background, if not). :)

These are very nice! You should definitely make them available somewhere, and thank you for offering!

Estelindis Parts based books would rock, I would have no problem helping with a project like that as I have grown somewhat proficient at disecting images. It would probably need more then 3 sections though, the spine, the lock, the center section, and the corners.

Rubies I sent you a PM.

Frith thank you for the kind words

Eradrain thanks for the kind words as well, I will upload the source to the vault as soon as I go through the rest of the books and disect any other offerings.

I think (possibly wrongly) that part-based icons are hard-coded to have three parts. Which parts would we isolate as distinct elements if that was the case? Anyway, we'd have to find out first whether it could work or not.

In the meantime, I'd love to have a copy of your resource too. :-)

Doesn't Project Q contain some "new" 3 part things? I vaguely remember seeing amulets done like this. If so you could check how they did it and apply it to books, which is a real sweet idea. Nice work on isolating the bits, Birdman. That level of teeny tiny detail must have taken you a while. The scaling is very subtle, again, nice work.

I've uploaded the source files to my mediafire account (forgot I had one lol) the link is provided below. I will be going over the rest of the book offerings and disecting/adding to this and then adding the whole dealio to the vault.

http://www.mediafire...ooks_Source.rar

Thank you for the compliments Lass :) It really wasn't that bad cutting out the attributes, I've done a lot bigger projects that span over a day or two for a cut out in comparison this was cake. Image IPB

Updated to reflect additions to Source file.

Quick hack:
http://data.virusman...based_books.rar
Part-based books using Birdman's icon parts.
Extract files to your override folder, create new item, select "Books", edit item appearance.
Bottom part is the base book, middle is decoration, top part is currently empty.

Birdman they look great. Couple of thoughts. Any chance of making some stone covers (malachite, marble, tigers-eye etc) or metal (iron, copper, gold) or wood or any other sort of standard texture? The other thought is any chance of converting some of the work you've already done into brushes for programs like gimp or photoshop?

Keep up the good work.

Ok, finished the stripping of the books, then I had some fun with some textures. I tried the tiger eye and have 2 variations there, that lead to a tiger and jaguar skin lol. The others are a ruby and emerald and a variation on one of the books colors to make it look like stone. I'm adding this to the original file on mediafire I'll wait a bit for a vault submission and we can lump everything together if everyone is cool with that?

They look great. Is a nearly completely transparent book possible? I have an ancient (1st ed. judges guild) module that has an invisible and levitated book in it. Also, given that you have the size of icon used is there any chance of making something larger or smaller? Also any chance of new underlying book designs?

Keep up the good work.

Yes, yes, and yes. However I would think larger and smaller would create a new item altogether as far as the parts are concerned because you would need a full set of parts for each. I don't know how much of a pain that is to throw into a hak that would be cep compatible, etc. I grabbed some Rune Symbols last night that I will cut out and put on the covers of the books (maybe those would be good to use as the invisible books).

Something along these lines with the book semi transparent so it looks ghosted or something:

All kinds of options really.

Looking good. Which image editing software do you use. If it's either Photoshop or Gimp then you might find Obsidian Dawn might be useful for extra resources. Properly used brushes can save you a lot of time and effort, cutting out the need for a lot of cutting and pasting. If you use something else, the Resources & Stock Images section of Deviant Art is agood place to look. Actually DA is good for pshop and gimp as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the new source file, Birdman. More stuff to play with! :-D

I've broken up the details into two sets of parts and coloured them all four different ways. (The books themselves comprise the third part; I coloured each one four ways too.) The thing is, even though I have nine sets of parts for the details (eight really, but one is blank for plain books), only five show up in the toolset. Does anyone have any idea why this might be?

Here's the hak if anyone wants to take a look (but it doesn't have Birdman's awesome new set of books yet, just a few standard ones - and a few of them are coloured ickily - this is just an alpha version).

I use photoshop cs3 at work and 7.0 (oldie) at home. I use DA quite often for different projects as a matter of fact that is where I got the rune from and a few dozen others as well as some other stuff I will be playing with. I haven't ever made any brushes (to address your previous post about making them) so I would have to check a tut for it no biggy but I'm not sure a book brush would be up anyones alley lol. I might reinstall NWN 2 and see what they have for books, but I don't have fond memories of it eating my DVD drive with that stupid securerom garbage. Barring that I will be looking for more books to source or attempting creation myself I guess lol. I'll check out obsidian dawn, thanks for the resources they are much appreciated.

You are running the hak by itself right (had to ask)? I'm lost when it comes to hak resources other then extracting stuff via nwnexplorer. I'm going to go get giddy now from all the kind comments. Image IPB

Yes, running the hak by itself. Should have sent a demo module with it, sorry. But it's super-easy to check out - just make a new item called "books" and go nuts. (Though, again, I apologise for some of the colour choices. I know they're not nearly as nice and yours. [And this comment is not "kind" - it's simply accurate!] Just want to get the thing working before I invest too much time in prettifying.)

Birdman076 from the tuts I've seen, making brushes is quite straightforward. You'll find tuts on both sites. For ease of reading I'd download all the tuts from od for pshop as there's not that many. Here's a quick-link to them. However od is best known for the quality free brush-sets on their site. And no I'm not connected in any way, just a fan :P.
