Its an idea i had, i made a playthrough with a female shepard my main shepard is male, and i noticed both ways whenever i picked the talk option for a character that is romancable but i didnt want the shepard to romance it was really easy and unintentional for me to start a chain, like for Jack i just wanted to talk to her and my shepard started sounding all flirty every time i tried to ask a question and jack brought up sex and then i facepalmed, what was worse i picked an option that sounded like i just wanted to get to know you but i hear my shepard say, 'I just want to know what makes you tick'.  Then with my female shepard anything i said to jacob sounded like she was flirting, and it did for Garrus and Tali to but i dont really care about that because those were the romance options  i picked for both shepards so i was intending it :P.

Im not sure about Miranda and Thane (I hated miranda's personality so i picked jack in the arguement and then she died in the suicide mission so not sure what it sounds like for male shepard) and thane on either shepards i never really talked to him.

Idea to make the system better
But anyways my idea to make the system better is when you say i just want to talk option before your shepard talks you get three (two if they arent romancable in any way) options, [Friendly], [Flirty], [Intimidating], all of them have paragon and renegade options.

The friendly one will get your squad mate to like you better, you learn more about them, but it doesnt sound like everything you say is flirting.  Using this one will also let all your paragon choices in this conversation give more paragon points.

The flirty one is obvious you pick that one if you want your shepard to romance with them or get into it.

The intimidating one is you learn more about the squad mate but it usually will be more like an interregation and your squad mate will usually not like you as much after it. This one will let all your renegade choices in the conversation give more renegade points,

The intimidating and friendly ones are linked so if you pick one of those you wont get to pick the other option until next time you can open dialogue, the flirty one isnt linked to them so you can go to it right after.

This way you cant unintentionally start a romance chain you dont want.

Sounds a bit too complicated to incorporate in the next game, but maybe future titles.

I read a topic on these forums where someone proposed dialogue between crew members while Shepard is absent, a la KotOR 2.

I thought that sounded interesting.

Isn't Dragon Age 2 implementing a system like this? If it is successful in DA2 then I think we might see something like this in ME3.

Similar i think, they are just coloring options and saying if its flirty, or going to make the squadmate mad, this way you still have the same number of options just you wont accidently go down a romance path you dont want or even if you didnt accidently start one your character wont have a flirty tone when they say, i just want to talk for a bit.
