just found this thread..........
so...........I can understand changing my family's skin tone to match Hawke's.......
but...........will my family all have the same hair color as my Hawke's??
so.........if I made.......say........a young looking white haired Hawke ( like Fenris )........then Bethany and Carver will have white hair, too?
i'm a bit confused on that.............

Hair, skin and [apparently] facial structure adapts to that of your Hawke.

I can offer a little more clarity here.
  • Your family's facial structure is based on the preset head you pick so that they look related, unless you wildly deviate from the basic structure of the preset's face, in which case, hey...go ahead! It's your game, after all.
  • Your family's skin tone is then evaluated and changed to something close to the skin tone you pick as a second pass. This is evaluated seperately from the facial structure.
  • Your family will always have black hair.
It's a very neat system, and really plays to our theme of family, I think. Hope you enjoy.

Very interesting concept, but also a risky move.

"Risky Move" is both of my middle names.

That said, it's not like we're running into a burning building to save lives, here. I can imagine higher-risk moves.

Any reason for that? Not a big thing, but still seems kind of odd if you make a pasty recessive gene laden red head or blonde Hawke and yet the family has black hair.

Will there be other similarities, such as hair and eye color or facial stucture?

Essentially it's this: there is a different appearance for any family members in the game based on one of the base appearance sliders for your PC (I can't remember if it's skin tone or the default face). They don't simply change tone/hair color verbatim, as that could lead to some really weird appearances. The idea is for them to be believable as blood relatives, so their facial structure and hairstyle will be different as well as their skin tone.

Meaning, yes, your Bethany or Carver might in fact look quite different from what you've seen.

That is super neat.  I love it when you incorporate some of those subtle features....

... so theoretically, my Bethany could end up with the so-called "herp derp" look that Carver has been teased of having......

Kinda sounds like the feature from fallout 3.

Well I guess if their hair is going to be stuck at any color, black makes the most sense. Then the main character without black hair can just be passed off as 'oh she has my grandmothers hair'

The idea of this feature scares me a little. What if they end up looking strange? Not to mention it's going to really mess with me on second playthroughs.

I have to say it's a good idea though. Almost necessary even with the role your family plays in the story. Going to be really strange looking at other people's screenshots though.

I won't have a problem making a black-haired Hawke (or justifying a red/blonde Hawke), but I'm curious why hair color was treated differently than skin color.

Dark hair is, unless I'm mistaken, the dominant phenotype for hair color.

Hi Mike.  Thanks for clarifying that!  Will the other preset head/face structures look fairly as good as the default faces?  Will they look better than the presets in DAO or similar?

I can only assume it's to ensure a visual connection between your family and your Kirkwallian (Kirkwallish?) relatives. Would still be odd, though, so maybe some of their presets look ugly with certain hair colors? The same would go for skin tone, though, so... no idea. One can only hope it actually has some significance.

This isn't a criticism, but why always black hair? I'm curious.

eta: totally ninja'd. This'll teach me to just read the BioWare replies like they're all that matters :D

Sounds awesome. I rather like the fact that my family won't share my hair color. It will make my Champion more special. A (non-)black sheep.

Black hair works realistically on all skin tones, while blonde hair looks "off" on darker skin tones. As such, you can customize Hawke however you like, but your family will have black hair.

hmm........that makes sense.

will there be more hairstyles than in DAO?  and can we have youthful looking white hair like Fenris ( not the oldish silver/grey in DAO )?

Not obviously related but it's worth asking, because it actually is :

-Do we still get an override folder on the PC version ? Have you changed the erf and GFF file formats since Orgins ? Are you still using GFF to store savegame data and face morphs.

(For the curious, I plan to use the in-game editor and savegame editing to model the family to my liking)

Yeah, but if the kid has white blond on dark skin, the parents should too, so they look wrong together.

Wouldn't if feel more immersive that if you make a funky looking Hawke that your family looks wierd as well? When I say that I mean about the clashing skin tone's with hair, The preset facial structure is totally cool with me. I'm not saying what you've done isn't leaps and bounds in the right direction, but I was just wondering why you didn't take that extra step.

This and several other reasons are why Bioware needs to get some facts to the public sooner. That is a cool feature.
