well i have just about had it..and after reading the  various posts it seems i am certainly not alone in this..the game FREEZES ,,locks my system up,'does not resapond' e.t.c..reboots,re-installs imcluding OS re-install will not cure the problem, various versions of Physx, various drivers including massive rolls backs upto 6 months ago for board, grfx card e.t.c, i have even tried both vista x64=x32= Windows 7 ultimate x64=x32..its the same old thing,,.also tried every screen resolution, all effects on or off e.t.c...the game worked fine up until i took on my first major quest,,,brecallian forest with the dalish elves,,i completed the quest sure but then thats when the real problems started, prior to this quest i had experienced a couple of locks ups but nothing serious..now it is serious,,the game freezes,,locks ups,,crashes,,CONSTANTLY..i did manage to get a save just before the 'travel' point on the map at the dalish camp but i am unable to escape this area due to the game not even being able to load when i travel..it just locks up..so..

lock ups 'check
crashes 'check'
will not load ' check'

i know the game is young and there is only one patch (which solved none of my problems,or anyone elses it seems),,what rig did bio-ware test/build this on? i mean for heavens sake!

cpu-pentium q6600
mobo-dfi-TR2-s
memory - 8gb corsair dominator
grfx - ati gainward 4870-x2 rampage
monitor - viewsonic vp2650wb
base - thermaltake LCS
psu - corsair 550w

I know this game is quite buggy, but since you seem to have plenty of partitions, have you tried windows xp?

While it's most likely the game that's at fault I figure you might have some old piece of hardware with vista/win7 driver compatibility issues.

well,it dd not work either, i am now thinking it something to do with relative support for my hardware configuration,i would wager it to be memory related, the way the game freezes then resumes randomly and/or otherwise crashes completely..a memory overflow or leak problem making the game spool on an interupt, the sound in a constant loop and the nature of the crashes behaviour certainly indicating this..

thank the gods modern warfare 2 came through the post today! :-( :-)

incidently no old hardware here, my primary drive is solid state and as you can discern the rest of my rig is relatively new, (the quad core cpu still holding its own but yes nearly 3 yreas old)

Have you tried messing with your core affinitys in the task manager? That has helped some people with similiar issues. No promises but it may help.

Have you tried disabling PhysX and setting your affinity to one core?

Disabling PhysX is done from within the Nvidia control panel.
You need to be in Advanved view mode.

Un-install, check keep save game files and un-check settings. Once re-installed, disable all uploading options to your user profile. Download any DLC content again, then load up a save game file. I had to do this twice to get it to work correctly again. There's issues that Bioware is not responding to regarding memory leaks or somethings else is just going on...

This worked for me, couldn't hurt to try :)

i have solved the problem,i thoroughly examined my error reporting log and found endless critical errors regarding 'The driver detected a controller error on \\Device\\Idle\\IdePort2...

it seems i am not alone in this problem either as i verified this error with other users in hardware forums and it seems to be a problem native to windows 7, it causes the freeze up and crashes i am experiencing and i am sure is the symptom many others are suffering with win7..

all of my drives including rom are sata devices,i simply switched channels appropiately to avoid port 2 and voila! no more lock ups! no more Misery!!!

i must mention that it was not only DAO that would crash buty call of duty modern warfare 2 and blood bowl (the only games i have installed on my rig) all games crashed and displayed the same symptoms..this re-arrangement of devices to more appropaite channels has cured the problem..i am rather happy to say the least as i was about to take a large hammer to something :-)

anyway thankyou all for your kind help it was greatly appreciated and indeed goaded me into persuing this problem with the knowledge you kindly beings had my back as indeed i would have yours were you in dire need.

maybe this solution should be stickied?
