I just picked up nwn2 on steam and I'm trying to come up with a character build to play through the main campaign and MotB.  (AFAIKT I should plan on using a different character for SoZ.  Is that right?)

The things I think I need out of my PC are:

1) Bluff, Diplomacy, and/or Intimidate at a high bonus so I can talk to NPCs.  (I’m thinking Diplomacy.  Do I need more then one?  How many ranks do I need?)

2) Tanking stats, so I can lead my party from the front.  (I guess this is a RP thing for me)

3) Trap and lock skills, again so I can lead from the front.  (So at least 1 level of rogue for trapfinding and elf so I don’t have walk slowly all the time)

(I’m basing all of this on the idea that my companions can take care of my spell casting and crafting needs.  Is that right?)

Some things that would be nice to have:

4) Good attack and damage, so I can feel like I’m helping in combat.

5) Good UMD skill, so I can get in on this “spell casting” thing and mix and match companions/solo more with out missing out on restoration type magic.  (I don’t know if this will work as well as I want it to.  What do you guys think?)

Okay, on to the stream of conscience character building...

(one level of rogue) + (mid-to-high int) + (able learner) = (1), (3), and (5)  -->  Okay good
(tanking stats) = (high AC), (good HP), and (good saves)
(armour) + (shield) = (high AC)
(fighter levels) = (good HP) + (okay fort saves)
(rogue levels) + (NW9 levels) = (okay ref saves) + (mid-bad will saves)
add feats to get okay will save (iron/epic will, steadfast determination, and indomitable soul)
add divine champion levels to make okay saves good  -->  Okay that’s (2)
I think feats from fighter and DC levels plus high str will get me (4)  -->  That’s it...

THE BUILD:
some kind of elf
max Diplomacy, Disable Device, Open Lock, Search, Use Magic Device
1 > rogue
2-7 > fighter
8-12 > NW9
13-22 > DC
23-30 >fighter
note: needs 16 int
note: get high str
note: get weapon focus before level 13
(I’m think I will use a scimitar and tower shield.  Are those good picks?)

Stats as half-drow look like:
16 str, 14 con, 14 dex, 16 int, 8 wis, 8 cha

Look out for the xp penalty!  If I play half-elf its okay but some other kind of elf and I need rogue 7/fighter 8 instead of rogue 1/fighter 14.  What do you guys recommend?

The big questions:

Will this build work?  Can I take NW9 levels like any other prestige class or are there plot requirements?

Will I be able to tank?  Will I do good damage?  Will it be fun to play at low and high levels?

Should I add more rogue levels?  (I would lose some feats, HP, and BAB.  I would get some sneak attack and skill points.  Could get some Tumble and Heal maybe?)

How much Diplomacy do I need?  Would it be good to add some Bluff and/or Intimidate to this build if I get the skill points?

What will I be able to do with my UMD skill?

Am I overlooking something?

Thank you for your time!:wizard:

It should work. You do take an awfull lot of save-supporting feats what seems like a bit of a waste to me. Failing a saving throw sometime is not that bad. To each his own though. I do think you should at least take regular Knockdown. Won't be of much use against strong opponents, but can sometimes interrupt spellcasters.

I think there were plot requirements for NWN9 once, but they were lifted in MotB or SoZ? I'm not sure about this.

Yes. Average. No, not for me anyway (mostly auto-attack is boring).

I'd say yes. With 1-2 extra Rogue levels you loose no BAB. One gives you Evasion which is very good with that solid Reflex save and second gives you another d6 of sneak-attack dice. More then that is up to you, what you prefer. More skill points and sneak attacks or more BAB and survivability.

How much Diplomacy do I need?  Would it be good to add some Bluff and/or Intimidate to this build if I get the skill points?

Probably as much as you can get. Not really, it's not necessary, no.

What will I be able to do with my UMD skill?

Use class and race restricted equipment (for example Monk boots). Cast spells from scrolls and wands.

Am I overlooking something?

Do you see the problem?

If you want elven Keen Senses, a half-breed will not do.

But you're also correct that going with an elf with an uneven Rogue/Fighter split would lead to an xp penalty.

Agreed about the save feats. And yes, they were lifted in SoZ.

You can do a Wood Elf Rogue/Ranger. Rangers are great for the OC. No XP penalty and you'll get more skill points.

Whatever class you play in the end, go with a high STR. There's a lot of sneak attack immunes in the OC.

Definately Wood Elf. Rogue 1 (at 1st level) with Able Learner feat, everything else in Ranger. With this, you can take all the rogue skills you want while leveling as a Ranger. Strength build w/ free two-weapon fighting feats.

What I prefered with my Ranger/Rogue build was taking improved favored enemy feats.
