If you want a point & click I recommend Wintermute -> http://dead-code.org/home/

Is much less limited than AGS and you can even use 3D if you wish. Unless you really want to keep the old-school Lucas games feel, I think this is a better choice.

That does look much better but the question remains, how hard is it to make a game with that

UPDATED 01/11/2011
I figured I'd post a summary to help focus discussion:

The general consensus:
 • To make an adventure game in the Mass Effect Universe.
 • We will not use GM to make the game.
The growing consensus:
 • To make a prequel game focusing on Garrus and C-Sec.
 • To have the game take place on the Citadel.
 • To make a game mostly serious in tone, but retain elements of humor.
 • To make a "noir" style game.
Under discussion:
 • Which program to make the game with, up for discussion: AGS or Wintermute.  We need to decide on engine here very soon.
 • What will our artistic direction will be:  are we going to stick retro, are we going to go cartoony, are we going 3D, which has been suggested.
 • The general plot of the game.
 • The character list of the game.
 • The setting of the game, time wise.  Will it only take place on the citadel, or will you visit other locations?
 • Any and all game mechanics

Offers to help:

I offered to help do character sprites.  I will attempt a few backgrounds too and see how they look.

Phaedon offered to help write the plot.

DarthCaine offered to help write the plot/game mechanics.

I could always help out with character sprites, even though I've always been more of a general texturer and only briefly looked into sprites. I'm sure you guys could always use some extra help, though.

And, I know someone who's figured out a few ways to duplicate Turian voices, if you guys would ever be interested in adding in voice acting later on.

**** yeah.  I would at least.

Btw guys, since I assume that SinDrome is offering to do the programming here, should we just go with the engine that he's repeatedly stated that he wants to use:  AGS.

I mean, people have attempted to talk about using something else.  But it seems like we keep coming back to using it.

Just woke up, and i'm going to take a look at that other program that was just posted.... so i guess it will be AGS or Wintermute. I like the screenshots of those... and i noticed like manny people stated that AGS is very limited. Game Maker... i really dont want to use... So it will be choosing between AGS & Wintermute

Voice acting would be awesome if he could do a good Garrus replica...
but if we are going to use voices we need alot of voice acting... for asari, volus, krogan etc.
that will be alot of work i guess! About the sprites... Draw us a sprite of an asari and Uszi & Me will deceide? =)
Just a simple frontview of an asari!

Actually, I've got a C-Sec Turian based on that Garrus sprite already finished back at home, considering the game would be based on his days as a C-Sec operative. I can always post it once I get back in about 4 hours. And I'll try and get an Asari taken care of, but it's finals week here so it may take some time.

So I'm looking at Garrus and a Mass Effect timeline while we are talking about a plot/setting:

http://masseffect.wi...Garrus_Vakarian
http://masseffect.wi...CE_-_2186_CE.29

Except we aren't really given very many dates to use there. Like, I can't find any official figure on how old Garrus is, or anything that gives a timeline of how long Garrus spent at any one position.

The best there is is a quote from Patrick Weeks:

Eradyn wrote...

HOOOOOLY------

I FOUND IT. I ACTUALLY FOUND IT.

RE: Regarding Garrus' age according to a BW employee:

Okay, this is attributed to Patrick Weekes with a LiveJournal posting under "Pats_Quinade"

On 9/11/2009 he stated:
"I don't think there IS a canonical answer, but the intent was always that he was a relatively inexperienced C-Sec officer who had enough experience under his belt to be frustrated with the system. I'd definitely say under 30, provided that works in terms of turian training."

Link to the full conversation with his reply at the bottom.

When he is 15 he joined the Turian Military.

Assuming he is "less than 30," at the start of mass effect, that gives 14 years max for him to get out of the military, into C-sec, and do some sort of impressive something that he is given the most serious assignment a C-sec officer can recieve in investigating a rogue spectre. They're not going to let some low level jockey do that, and as evidence of that Garrus is only ever seen reporting directly to Executor Pallin, the head of C-Sec. I think we can also assume that because Garrus still espouses this attitude of "I think I can change the world," then he must have actually been able to change something during his early years at C-Sec before getting fed up.

So... One obvious story is a look at an important assignment that may have given Garrus a big promotion. Setting the story earilier, I imagine Garrus as little more than a C-Sec grunt that might happen to accidentally stumble into a bigger story.

I personally see Garrus as a low ranking officer being relatively free of Free tape and enjoying his job.  Then, in the process of blowing some impresive case, he gets a big promotion and now he has to deal with Citadel Beauracracy.  This also keeps Garrus relatively young/inexperienced, yet still as high in rank as we find him when ME1 starts.

/2 cents

www.youtube.com/watch

we could use this girl maby, in our game.
Like, she often gives garrus intel.
I always thought garrus and her had some sort of an relationship.
Maby not like an love relationship but i guess they knew eachother before Shepard comes blasting in.
Like friends or something.

Rooooooooooooooooooar.
Just finished beasting this "Conversation Sprite Blow-up."  I just wanted to see if I *could* make something higher res, with paint, for the game.  The results surprised even me!

It was heavily referenced, so I don't know if I could do as good a job from scratch and with my imagination, but the initial results were... encouraging.

The actual sprite size is about 70x100, give or take.  This would make it good for the Gabriel Knight style conversation system where conversations happen in a totally different window with a blowup of the characters.  If used in game, his head is going to take up about 1/3 of the width and 1/2 the height of the screen.

It would not be good for the kind of conversation system a pop-up window... kinda like the one MEC looks like it's using or alot of other games.  When I finished I messed around with sizing it down to 30x50 for that kind of system and it doesn't look completely awful, but it would have to be cleaned up at that resolution.

Whilst a Garrus game would be nice, I think just for the sake of not eventually contradicting anything Bioware may release at some stage, the characters should be original.

Could still have Garrus appear at the C-Sec academy or something, even then.

But do what you want, that's just my opinion.

Personally, I'm not concerned with a fan made game being retconned in future DLC/ME3.  Not like a fan made game could ever be considered canon anyway.

Er, a more sensitve matter would be some Garrus fans disagreeing with how he is portrayed in the game, which is inevitable no matter how good a job you do.

That to. Plus, MEchronicles had to get permission from Bioware to make their game, and they can't recieve any profits. And at best, characters from the ME games will have cameo's from what I ca tell so far. Bioware might be less willing to allow you to publish a game with one of the main characters from their story arcs.

I've posted EA's reply to the MEC people in this thread earlier.  The conditions of them making there game seem pretty general, i.e. they seemed to me like a policy toward fan made games in general.

Fan made remakes, reboots and demakes are made all the time.

The ones that do get shut down are usually extremely advanced games that extensively utilize the original games assets or are improvements on the original game.

Because we're demaking the game in a spinoff universe, which is small in content, for which we claim no credit, and by which we will earn no profit, I'm not sure I see the problem.

What darknoon said. Also, don't claim to be a Bioware/EA employee.

I'd also like to add that our team fully supports other fan-made projects like these, and we would be happy to help if you need anything.
