Whilst a Garrus game would be nice, I think just for the sake of not eventually contradicting anything Bioware may release at some stage, the characters should be original.
Could still have Garrus appear at the C-Sec academy or something, even then.

But do what you want, that's just my opinion.

I support this, though for an entirely different reason. I hate the over-use of character. Star Wars, for example, turned into a galactic "villege" where out of quadrillions of people only a dozen seem to be doing anything remotely important.

Garrus showing up for fan's sake? Why not. But I think an original character could do just as well, better actually.

Meh, it's a demake, you shouldn't worry about being restricted by cannon.

Looking good! :P
I still think that the face is a litle big... like, that conversation box takes up almost all of the screen.  I guess that you'd alternate so it would be fine, but yeah.  I would want it a touch smaller, personally.

I also think that whatever our game looks like, it'd need a much, much smaller UI screen on the bottom there.  Good lord, that thing takes up like 25% of the screen.

You know I think if the in-game Garrus was like one pixel wider, I might be able to squeeze in a lot more detail on his face and stuff.

-----------

Currently throwing together a random Asari Converstion Close-up, to see if I can do similar quality work with things besides Garrus.  So far... not terrible.   God, I can't draw lips for a damn though.  Plus I'm color blind, and light shades of purple/blue/green are kinda hard to tell apart.

I wonder if that's why there so many brown, gritty shooters?  Too many color blind people in the game's art department?

Alright.  This was a test I gave myself to see if I could still pull off a good conversation blow up.  And it was a lot harder.  And I'm not as happy with it.  But it's still not awful:

She came out looking a little snooty... which is probably a good thing, since Asari always struck me as snooty!

She was also a lot harder to draw.  I'm definitely looking for feedback on this one.  She's clearly not as good as Garrus.  But... still good, imho.

EDIT:  OOOH.  I forgot to mention.
I'm R/G color blind.  So like, if one of these shades of bluish green is actually like a purple or more red, then... let me know.  Cause it would look the same to me!

The head of a Turian who was going to be the main character in a Mass Effect fan game of mine. It's on indefinite hiatus though. Made it in MS Gorram paint, because that's how I roll.

Yeah she does look a little fat. Maybe a little matronly.

Off the bat, I could hollow our the area to the left of her mouth and bring her cheeks in slightly. And I could tighten up the jawline a bit by bringing it up more. That would make her look more youthful, I guess.

But I kinda like her a little... thick, and regal looking. Maybe she's some sort of dignitary who needs help at C-Sec but is a total snob to everyone?

Yeah, she's definitely looking less portly.  I think a fat asari model might still be useful though, so I'ma hang onto it.
The 8-bit theme is pretty sick.

Looks good!

If you want to help out with Sprites, I'd definitely appreciate it.  We'll need a lot of them.

Off the bat, I know that we'll need the following.  Even without writing anything, we can assume that we need these:

4 view (Front, Back, Left, Right) of each coucnil race:

*Generic Asari
*Generic Elcor
*Generic Hanar
*Generic Human Male
*Generic Human Female
*Generic Krogan
*Generic Turian
*Generic Volus
*Also, Keepers
(36 sprites total)

Also we need conversation blow-up sprites:

*Asari [Done.]
*Elcor
*Hanar
*Human Male
*Human Female
*Krogan
*Turian
*Volus
(8 sprites total)

So that's a pretty long list.  If anyone wants to help out at all with that list, they can feel welcome.  I mean, it seems like a pretty unstructured environment right now.

My current to do list:
1).  Fix in game Garrus sprite, i.e. head and armor proportions in side view, and I'm going to experiment with making the side view a bit wider.[Edit: Done]
2).  Start on walking animations for Garrus sprite.
3).  More conversation blow-ups.  I'm kinda feeling like doing a Volus!

Well, I know it took me a while to upload this, but here's a simple edit I did on the Garrus sprite to make a generic C-Sec Agent. It'd be easy enough to convert over to Garrus too, if you want to go for his ME1/C-Sec look.

Posted Image

And really, this was just a few minutes of me jacking around on a Monday night, I'm probably going to start an Asari sprite from stratch when school calms down a little bit.

That looks awesome!  And I realize now of course that your right, I did Garrus in his ME2 armor.  I kinda like the ME2 look a bit better... but maybe that's because I made it, hehe.

I'm really excited to see your Asari!

Let me post the fixes I've been applying to my original sprite.  I widened his arms, which I think looks a lot better, and I widened the lower parts of his legs--again for the better imo.  Now he looks a bit more like the hero of our game and less like a scrawny dude.

Posted Image

In order to fix the side view's huge heads, but also let them line up properly, I've scaled his head down 1 pixel, so now Garrus is 1 pixel shorter.  The reason his head is so damn huge in the sideview is because his head is so damn huge in the front view too.

I also shortened his nose.  It looks rather strange in the sideview if it's 2 pixels long.

I'm really happy with this second draft.  The proportions are much better, I believe.  I also changed the shape/coloring on a couple of small things too.

I like it, but it still looks a bit like our 'garrus' turian... maybe you should give him a RED armour or something like that? =D

Well the C-sec guys all wear blue.  And we'll need generic C-Sec cops.  Maybe give him different color facepaint or make his face tones a bit darker.

Well that's useful.  So I really need to tone down that front leg kicking backwords.  Kinda insanely wrong.  And the movement of the things on his legs really don't bother me that much which is awesome!

How does one put together a GIF like that?  I could save myself some time with editing the animations.

I use ulead Gif animator 5 for that... but you could animate with photoshop too... only ulead is much easier... i guess u could find a torrent for that somewhere? Or i could share it with you on dropbox? are you familiar with dropbox?

So... I'm almost done with a more or less complete Garrus Sprite sheet. It isn't fully complete because I haven't done any talking, interacting, shooting, etc animations. But the walking ones are the largest and most complicated, so I feel like it's "more or less" complete...

I just wanted to post that we've now recruited Phaedon to help us develop a script and we'd love for people to continue to seek to be involved.

I think whenever I make my next in-game sprite I'll try and put together some sort of tutorial. We have received several comments like, "Oh I don't know what I'm doing, but I would like to be involved."  So I will show people how I do it, and if they put together something good, then they can help!  :)

We also would obviously appreciate as much forum feedback as possible, especially on items listed below as "under discussion."

Oh, and updating this thing:

The general consensus:
*To make an adventure game in the Mass Effect Universe.
*We will not use GM to make the game.
*We will use Wintermute due to it's greater capabilities compared to AGS (making the thread title a bit of a
  misnomer).
*We will make a Garrus at C-Sec Prequel game.
*We will stick "retro" and shoot for a 320x200 game resolution.
The growing consensus:
*To have the game take place entirely on the Citadel.
*To make a game mostly serious in tone, but retain elements of humor.
*To make a "noir" style game.
Under discussion:
*Specific plot details.
*The character list of the game.
*Any and all game mechanics
      --i.e.
      --A paragon/renegade system?
      --Conversation wheels?
      --Combat?
      --Etc.
Offers to help:
*I'm working on character sprites.  I have said I will attempt a few backgrounds.
*Phaedon is writing the plot.
*Teltaur has offered to help with sprites, has submitted a C-Sec sprite which I loved.
*DarthCaine has offered to help.
*Several folks at the MEC forums have offered to help.

I like lists.

Well, I finished messing with the Asari sprite, here's what I have so far:

Posted Image
Just open it in Paint and zoom if you want a better look.

The left is a Liara color-scheme, and the one on the right is a general scientist outfit. The C-Sec Turian is included for a height comparison.

Right now I only have the "scientist" version done, the body should work for any human scientist as well. The thing's easy enough to recolor for any other versions. Next one up will be the common dress you see Asari wearing in the Citadel.

If you compare those asari's with the turian... you will notice that those asari have very big/fat legs. Haha.
Besides that i like 'em! =D

Well, the legs really aren't that big, especially considering Turian legs are abnormally skinny, while Asari legs are more human sized (and I think part of it is that you're taking the edges of the coat hanging over their legs as part of the legs themselves).

Posted Image
Posted Image

I can always decrease the size some if I need to, but I never really thought they were too big.

EDIT: I just made a few adjustments to shave off a little of the fadeout I had and I think it made enough of a difference. Tell me what you think of these:
