I have a Pentium 4 2,5 Ghz, Radeon X1950 Pro with latest drivers, 1024 Mb RAM and Windows XP 32 Bit.  I have played this game on this computer before, with the exact same hardware, it just doesn't work now.

Whenever I try to install Kotor it just asks me if I want to uninstall the game. I don't have it installed (or Kotor 2 either for that matter, although I own both), so it's weird that it asks me to uninstall it. If I click yes, it "uninstalls" the game in a few seconds and asks the same question again the next time I try to install.

I get the "Install/Exit" screen when I try to install it on autorun, but then it just asks the same question as above. If I double-click on the setup icon (installing without use of autorun) the same thing happens.

Is there something I can tweak (I'm a noob when ti comes to tweaking BTW) so that it installs or am I doomed?I'd appreciate any help.

You aren't doomed, well, being a noob at computers you may be doomed, the reason it is telling you that is cause it did not uninstall the all of the registry files for the game, and, since you don't know much about computers, and since I don't know enough to tell you what to do there, I would not recommend you go into your registry files and search for the issues to delete so you can reinstall the game, because if you screw up your registry, you pretty much screw up your computer and wind up having to have it fixed, or have to do a total wipe and reinstall of windows depending on how bad you screw up your registry. There ARE programs out there that say they help clean your registry, but I do not recommend them either cause they DO get rid of broken and unused registry issues like they say, but they ALSO get rid of registry issues that will appear broken to the program, but you will actually need those registry files. So those programs tend to screw up your computer too. Basically it would be worth it to get a computer geek that KNOWS what they are doing, even if you have to pay them, to help you with your computer, because depending on what else you do with your computer, (such as use it for work or something else important like that) you do NOT want it to screw up and you wind up having to do a fresh install or w/e and lose all your important data. OR you could see if there isn't a way for KotOR itself to uninstall its own registry values like there is a way to with Oblivion, but I do not remember what Bethesda recommended I do when I had the same problem with Oblivion nor do I know if the same thing would work for you.

I have it on steam now (couldn't wait for a solution from this forum) and it works great, but sometimes I think that steam is too slow (you have to first start steam and then it says "starting Kotor") that's why I haven't deleted this thread or said anything until now. It would be nice to have the option to manually install Kotor from the discs, but it has been running fine on Steam and it doesn't take that long for the game start either. But thanks for replying.

ok, good, as long as you are happy with the steam version, personally I don't like steam cause they add a few files to the install that don't hurt the game, but for some (very few actually) games, those files interfere with stuff like mods and stuff, which I like to install sometimes to enhance my playtime. Such as alien PC mods, I hate the fact that you cannot play an alien species in a game full of them...

Download a portable program called RevoUninstaller. It's a freeware program I use to uninstall programs all the time. It basically scans your hard drive for traces left behind from the installer. It'll find the registry files associated with KotoR and ask you if you want to delete them. Double-check to make sure they're KotoR registry files (it's pretty easy since they're all filed under KotoR or something like that) and there you go.

Redmokah, I love you. RevoUninstaller found the files and I can reinstall now. =D

that works too I guess, honestly I have never heard of RevoUninstaller or I may have recommended it
