I find my mages very weak.
The only good thing they do is heal and cast AoE spells that damages allies.

Warriors on the other hand are only good for tanking.

I still haven't found a class that can whip out crazy amounts of damage. (I think I'm getting there with my rogue, though. -Dual wielding + backstabbing. Too bad he's made of glass.)

No way!, I love my rogue, my character "Duran" just finished slipping into his Dragon Blood Armor  (DLC set) and is actually  MORE versatile tank than my main tank!.

It's all about agro management here people, if one character has agro on a boss, then kite the boss around so the others can do ranged damage. My party almost consistently is comprised of a Tank (Alistair), Rogue (me), Healer (Wynne) and DPS Mage (Morrigan) (I sometimes substitute out the DPS Mage for an off-tank like my War Hound (Butkus) or an extra Rogue (Lilliana) pardon me if I got the names wrong.

Considering that most RPGs screw mages royally, I think it's only time we got our due.

Compare to Drakensang, which (while otherwise an ABSOLUTELY AWESOME game) features mages that are good at one thing and one thing only: sucking. It takes forever to crap out any spell (hope you don't get interrupted), spell effects are pathetic compared to melee abilities and you run out of mana very quickly. After which your enemies are usually barely scratched, and you become a guy in leather armor (or robes) with a rapier...

Anyhow... what was I on about?...

Ah yes.

If you want to nerf warlcox, go back 2 WoW.

Otherwise, if you don't like mages, don't play one.

As far as I'm aware you can't set a mages tactics to deliberatley freeze everyone over and over and basically immobilize all the enemies for most of the battle , they would probably be stupid and just hit you with the cone of cold and freeze you at the same time

I also don't understand a way to make a CPU effectivley use spells like Inferno/Tempest/Blizzard/Earthquake and so forth

It's a single player game. Balance is much less important here because you can't god-mode and affect another player's experience. If you don't like the way a certain class or specialty plays, then don't play it. Focus on the parts of the game that you do find enjoyable.

I'm a Tank by nature and I am loving the damage I can do in this game. Believe me, as an end game raid tank in WoW, I have accepted the fact that we Tanks in that game are merely everyones meat shield while the 10 year old kid next door can put out more damage with a wet noodle than we can. I may never go back. Sorry Guild, get another sucker!!!

Tonya777, You can set mages to consistently cast freeze, the problem here is the MOB has a chance to resist the spell, and also keep an eye on the mana, be sure you have set tactics to use Lyrium is they get low and also to keep casting Freeze at different intervals of the target's health.

CPU-controlled characters are what you make them. (Tactics.)
I mean I don't think their abilities do any good.

The best abilities I have are the ones that stun and disable enemies.

Try a two-handed warrior then.

hah,

this is quiet the conversation. I'm sitting here imagining the threat after the nerf you want is done to the game "OMG what have they done to me mages." Opinions are great. just state them for what they are and enjoy the game. no one is forcing you to play the best spec, you created that spec. if you looking for a challenge create one, gimp your mage. Take some responsibility, you created that uber mage, if its a problem for you un-create it.

now i predict more arguments :)

cheers!

FF games definantley don't screw mages over

All the regular FF games the mages are very powerful and useful , on FFXI online I had a lvl 75 black mage and it was by far the most powerful character I ever made (More than DRK & BLU I got to 75 too) and could outdmg any other classes in my partys

In that game if you made a party of only black mages it made for unfair XP to the rest of the classes in the game , we could kill any enemy in about 1 second flat and gain XP at a much faster pace

But then theres Oblivion I remember being a mage sucking in that game for some reason , Rogue is best in Oblivion as far as I remember

Even in a single player story driven game you still cant get away from the min /max WOW ::MMO geeks...........the only way mages would even be considered unbalanced is if we fought each other in a player vs player but this is not MMO and I am glad it isn't. I have voiced my opinion and will now leave before I get ill......obviously this thread is tainted....maker protect us all.......we may have to burn it.

Just to be clear, I don't think mages are overpowered, I just think that healing abilities need to be shared around a bit more since that (in my opinion) is what limits party options. Of course I understand the need for specific roles (kind of...) but healing is just so important.

Thats cause your mages are being controlled by retarded CPUs right?

All CPU characters are gimp , perhaps with the exception of Allistar

Rubbish - you just have no idea what you are doing...

I don't think the problem is that mages are overpowered, simply very versatile. You can CC, Heal and Damage with one build. This is mainly because most of the decent spells are only tier 1, like mind blast.

Few obvious things:

A Warrior with a Shield in Full Juggernaught Armor should have more defense an Arcane Warrior in Cloth. But that's not the case in Dragon Age, while Arcane Warriors have better defense, they also can heal, have amazing CC and do more damage than a 2H Warrior at the same time.

I am very happy with my mage. I think they did great by letting us choose what we want and giving the mage REAL power.

In most single player games, there is some class/spec/skill set that makes the game too easy. In Oblivion, I got my stealth so high on my assassin that all I had to do if I got in trouble in a fight was stand still and the mobs couldn't see me. I had to purposely not do that in order to make the game any fun.

I don't think mages in general are too powerful although I am sure certain builds are pretty awesome. My mage only has Spirit Healer for a specialization (haven't found any others but Blood yet) and while he's pretty solid, he is limited by his mana pool and there is no way I could solo everything on hard. Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying not every mage build can do it.

I remember in Daggerfall (The Elder Scrolls 2, so the one before Morrowind for those that don't know) if you got your lockpicking skill up high enough you could effectively break into any store at night and just loot the place, taking literally everything, including a wagon and horse that you could then load up with all the stuff you took.  Whenever I played a thief type character that was the first thing I would do once you got out of the starting dungeon...

I thought I would be rid of this kind of ''class X is better than class Y please nerf'' nonsense when I left WoW, but alas, the nerds followed me here.

You're playing an "elf" in a video game.  I hate to break it to you buddy, but we're all nerds here.

Heh heh I think what he means is the constant douchebag level of LEETERY and whining we see in WoW. You see a lot of people who try to pass themselves off as hip people who game instead of the nerds we really all are by constantly abusing/degrading other players with their game snobbishness.

If mages are over-powered, then I must be doing something wrong :) haha.

It may depend on your level of experience with games in general, but I'm finding playing a mage to be challenging enough. Of course, my objective in the game is to be entertained as well as challenged - so I'm not interested in repeating a battle 10 times just for the challenge... I get "fatiqued".

Now, I know... maybe playing the same battle 10x is a lack of experience on my part, but it's the way it is. I enjoy the character I created, and find the game challenge enough.

I haven't tried the arcane warrior spec, but I probably will now on my mage.

I agree though, mages in this game can do too much, too well. If not for the fact that some mobs are immune to magical damage, there would be absolutely no reason to bring a melee dps or rogue archer.

The only class in the game that can heal is the best dps class as well, and the only consistent CC? Imba imo.

they just need to tone back the area effect spells, two of them can wipe the scene clean of enemies... or make it harder and more time consuming to learn a new school of magic so it's better to focus on one than multiple - therefore making it very hard to have a mage with powerful healing and damage and protection spells - magic is powerful, and a mage from each school should be brutal, but no one character should be God. As a warrior, the toughest moments int he game are when you get ambushed by mages it can be unwinnable (if the right sequence of spells is cast your whole party dies before any of them can take two steps to engage anyone-lesson: dont travel without at least one mage)
