I am nearing the end of the OC with a human Ranger/Rogue. I did most of the campaign with Khelgar, Elanee and Sand, and only had the occasional reload. I really liked Khelgar (when confronted with idea of working with goblins "Why not? We let Grobnar tag along, didn't we?") and Grobnar ("It's more like leaving the village idiot in charge of a huge, savage, nearly unstoppable wolf, who can only understand simple commands like 'kill', or 'stop killing', or 'oh no, put both halves of that man down this instant!'",) so I was considering starting over as a dwarf, halfling or gnome, just so we could have an army of the wee. Which leaves two questions -
What character would you build if you have Khelgar as a monk and Grobnar the bard in your group?
and
What NPC would you take along with you (which might color your answer to the first question) to complete your family of four?
Grobnar and Khelgar Group

You can play with almost any party, so go with what you like most.
But, to say something, what about some sort of divine caster (Cleric, Druid) as the PC, and Qara as a nuker (or Sand, but Qara's better)? You lack spellcasting, and "know that" I hate the Cleric companion from every possible approach (power, personality...).

I was thinking of a cleric as the PC, maybe going into some kind of battlecleric mode if I can find a prestige class that grants good combat ability. I worry a bit about leaving out the unlocking capability of a rogue, though I suppose I could always dual-class a mage and take Knock or some such, if that opens chests, too. On the other hand, I'd hate to put on level in rogue just to be able to open traps, doors and chests.

You don't need a PrC to make a Cleric a melee powerhouse, just go with the minimum WIS needed to cast spells, and put the rest into STR. But if you have MotB, Stormlord is amazing. If not' you're probably better pure or with a couple levels in another class, such as Fighter. You could go Warpriest, but you'd lose casting progression and wouldn't gain a lot. MotB also introduces Sacred Fist, a sort of Monk/Cleric hybrid, that's another good option.
About locks, you can:
- Take 1 Rogue level and Able Learner.
- Use the Knock spell with a Sorc/Wizard companion.
- Use an item to cast Knock. There's a couple you can buy at Neverwinter.

Took your advice, trying a Sacred Fist, with monk and cleric thrown in for good measure. I thought it might let me eschew Elanee, but I find I cannot fight and cast at the same time. Optimally, I would like to have Sand, Grobnar and Khelgar along, but I dunno if I can do a decent job of fighting AND healing. Have to see!

Yes, you can heal as a normal Cleric. If you want to focus on spellcasting, 1 Monk level will suffice, for Flurry and SF requirements. Then you can spend the rest of the levels into SF and Cleric, ending with 9th level spells.
