I just looked up the definition of Mary Sue (ironic since Im an aspiring writter) after seeing it pop up numerous times in threads and have to ask, is Shepard considered one?

I personally don't see it but people have said s/he is.

Pretty much. The same can be said of all RPG main characters, though. Kind of hard to get around.

So does that mean his perfect or what? Tha definition says that the character is either perfect in every aspect and/or held to very high esteem.

Shepard is not any of these things, at least not in my opinion.

Edit: Forget that last one Posted Image

People throw the term around so much it's lost all meaning. Everyone and everything that succeeds in a work of fiction has been labeled a Mary Sue by someone and much like bias it is one of the most improperly used terms on the internet.

I don't think so. Shepard's not the absolute most skilled person in the galaxy. Paragon Shepards are a bit naive, Renegade Shepards have issues.

Mary Sue-ism is about narrated perfection and lacking dimension, just being a powerful and important person isn't enough.

Like saying someone that you disagree with is a troll. That kind of overuse?

Not really. You can disagree with someone who is trolling.

Bella is a MarySue. Shepard is just overpowered.

Wesley Crusher from Star Trek TNG is a good example of a Mary Sue type character. Always does the right thing (eventually at least), always saves the day whenever he is involved, he is liked by everyone around him, in general is favored by the writers and lacks any sort of character flaw.

Daewan has an excellent example.

When most dudes see Bella they fall in love with her.

When most dudes see Shepard they open fire.

See the difference?

So Shepard is not a Mary Sue but borderlines the term enough to be consired one by the untrained eye. Got it.

This. I would even posit the original term as being vaguely defined. Its like 'modern art' or 'expressionism'. Such terms are best avoided.

A sue is so vaugely defined.......

Shepard fits a lot of the characteristics, hell simply being an rpg protagonist fulfills one of the main requirements of suedom.

You've got the gist of it, aye.

Any character that kicks a lot of ass and gets hit on more than once is going to be considered a Mary Sue by approximately 2/3rds of the internets.

Which sucks because the internets are never wrong. :(

If anything, Shepard is constantly challenged for the decisions he/she makes. I pissed off half my crew in both games. That counts for something. That's good writing on Bioware's part.

Only if all 37 internets agree. Quit spreading misinformation! This is the INTERNETS. Show some class, for Godwin's sake.

Shepard? No. A Mary Sue, IMO, is so powerful that there's no real gameplay challenge.

Consider the Normandy, though. It's fastest ship in the universe and it's stealthy. It's armed with Thanix cannons, improved armor, etc.). It now consists of the Normandy/EDI united and guided by the supposed best helmsman in the galaxy who grants this perfect machine an inspired bit of randomness and unpredictability.

I love the Normandy, but if she's not too good to be true she's getting close.

Did somebody mention Naz*s? Is Hitler a Mary Sue?

seriously though, Shepard isn't perfect and his specializes in what the player chooses and as far as the definition goes, Mary Sues are perfect in every way. Shepard isn't.

Further, Mary Sues can only be beaten by their "rivals." Shepard can be blown up by nameless jerks.

Or a Gary Stu?

I don't think that a cool guy or girl really needs to be a Mary sue or a Gary Stu just because his skills are really impressive.

Some people is really incredible in this world, that we try to find them a defect is other story.

Funny, wikipedia uses him as a prime example. I hate Star Trek so I wouldn't know.
