I was wondering about that too. I think that's "fanon," not canon.Squeeze the Fish wrote...

Hawt. Sexy. Bird-like. Dinosaur-like. Even a hint of dog-like-ness, for some reason. But they also purr, which is awesome. They're apex predators. Interesting society which would make for awesome social complications on the individual vs. group level. Interesting design. Cool without needing to be primarily sexy-aliens like asari.
Also, I hate the cold, so I'd totally hang out on Palaven.
Genuine curiosity: You know, I see this all over the place, but where in the world does it mention that they purr???

Out of all the alien species in Mass Effect, the Turians are the closest to humanity in attitude and temperament.
Yep. They seem to be slightly more militaristic and regimented overall, but are very human-like in everything but appearance. As far as I'm concerned, this makes them a little boring (although their kick-ass design makes up for it. Also Garrus.)

B-b-but...cats don't purr with their lips. There's one sitting on my lap right now (a cat, not a turian), and she's purring, and there's no lip action.Dionkey wrote...

Or are you just saying it's assumed they purr because they kinda look catlike?

Pretty much. I seriously believe this is the reason why so many women are attracted to Garrus..their all furries. Nothing wrong with that just an observation on my part.ciaweth wrote...

Turians are just jelous because we're better then them. Specially if you take out the council and take over the council (yeah I killed them, so what? they deserved it). We accomplished what they've been trying for so long. Even the codex implies that they want to take over.
Very interesting idea, are the Turians just waiting for a chance at a power grab? If so they have been waiting a long time!

they're really bad at revolutions apperantly.
I personally think that the relay inccident wasn't that, an inccident. You don't open fire at a ship and kill them because of that. Did they even try to open communications?

Hey Garrus is my bro on my male shep and my romance on my female shep, I just think Garrus is my bro in general. I always thought women loved turians because of their cat like look.ciaweth wrote...
Ah, yes, "furries." We have dismissed this claim because it's dumb. Consensus is that it's his personality and voice that do it.

Yes they are proud, but usualy not to the extent of being arrogant. They can act as adults and swallow their pride if needed. For example the first contact wars relatively peacefull ending, General Orakas apology to the Consort and the fact that they are often reduced to being the lapdog of the asari in the Council. They have no reason to like this but they can accept it for the greater good in the long run. But I bet there are many turians who are very idealistic about a "turian galactic dominance" agenda, kind of like TIMmy.
A great visual appearance too, this is how you design aliens well. I am looking forward to seeing the female turians future ME games.

Depends entirely which section of humanity you look at, and whether you are military or civilian.Marta Rio wrote...

Politically and culturally, nearly every civilian poster here would be far more comfortable and familiar in general depiction of Asari culture (democratic, capitalist, recognized individual rights, preference to compromise, legalalistic).
Military people, or those who lived in a authoritarian state, (ranging from benign authoritarianism like Singapore to police states) might be closer to the Turians than Asari: top-down authority, no democracy, collective rights over personal rights.

I assumed they purr because they seem to growl. By purr, I mean some sort of affectionate / appreciative throat-based noise. Even humans do it.
The human variant just isn't as hawt.
ETA: And see, if we'd gotten a real scene with Garrus, we'd know whether there was a purr or not.

Yeah, from a cultural perspective that's true. I was factoring other things in as well, since Turians seem to have similar life spans, and seem to reproduce in a similar way (as far as we know).

I don't think they hate non turians, except some like that guy trying to get a blade on to the Citadell, but that is just ignorance, wich is something I think everyone in the galaxy suffers from in some way. They are very sceptical about humans, wich I can't realy blame them for being.StarGateGod wrote...

Also... I dunno, turians just generally seem to be in awesome roles. There's our favorite turian the turian councilor, there's the desperate turian with nice-guy syndrome on Ilium, some really drunk ones on Omega... they make me laugh, therefore I like them. And Garrus being, well, Garrus doesn't hurt the "awesome" image.
