The Roman state existed under drastically different systemic international conditions than does the Hierarchy, which easily suffices for an explanation of their respective postures vis-a-vis the rest of the community of states. See in general Eckstein (2006) and (2008) for descriptions of the Republic and its position in a context of international anarchy - a context that does not obtain in the MEverse in the late twenty-second century. Put the Roman Republic in the Hierarchy's place, and it too would have neither reason nor scope for aggressive expansion. That's not what I would object to about either Rome or the Hierarchy, anyway; more so their stances on government and citizenship, their ways of running their respective militaries, and even the annoying concept of anima.lovgreno wrote...

Turians are Space Romans. I didn't start liking the real Romans until their empire started to fall apart. I'm still not too much of a fan of the Hierarchy. They need a good revolution to set them straight. Garrus individually, though, is outrageously useful and entertainingly socially awkward.
Romans wanted to rule everything they could just because they could. Almost all power and profit ended up in Rome.
Turians are content with protecting their own small part of the galaxy and are willing to work with other superpowers to keep as much of the rest of the galaxy relatively safe too.
The Hierarchy is not a system made for humans like us and thus we cannot expect to understand why it works for the turians, and it is is obviously a system that has served the turians well for a long time.

I think we need to remember that we're seeing the Turians from a human's perspective, you know, the species they went to war with not too long ago. Since then, humanity's been not only pardoned, but give a whole heck of a lot of power in a short amount of time. I think were we playing as, say, Asari!Shepard, we might view them in a different light. *shrugs*
I think they’re proud, but I don’t think I’d say xenophobic. I’d say they have a ‘cool’ relationship with humanity, but I’d also say that it’s reciprocated. Jacob calling Garrus a cuttlebone (in certain plotlines) comes to mind.
In addition to Garrus, Nihlus seemed like a pretty cool dude. He was the one who puts Shepard's name up for Spectre-ship.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
In addition, one must note that the Turians defeated the Krogans and formed C-sec. Unlike the Krogans (after the Rachni wars), the Turians did not abuse their power.

Actually the Turians are quite fine with the idea of military expansion. While they wont focus all their power at their homeworld, they want to expand the Turian empire as a whole. One such way is by conquering client races, which is what the humans became dangerously close to becoming.

Ultimately, generalizing a species is racism (fictional or otherwise). Everyone have their take on the world. Also, Garrus is unique in that he was good enough to survive all the crap they did with Shepard. I don't think that many other could have.
Come on its a fictional world I hate when a word like racism is used about fictional species in a fictional galaxy I think it insults and belittles real racism. I mean think about another example like Lord of the Rings, is it really racist to say the orcs are a brutal and nasty species? Thats why I like the word speciesm better or you can just say don't stereotype an entire species base on the half a dozen turians we have seen or something. The word racism stirs up emotions that just do not belong when we are talking about fictional entertainment.

Good point. It's not racism, but it's still narrowminded. And I like to think that there is always someone who deviates from the rule and is different. You're talking about stereotypes of turians and not actual turians (I know, too much gaming).

Yes I agree it definitely can be narrow minded. haha and in a game its kind of funny in real life not so much!

I think that Turians are the most well designed alien race in the game. Asari Quarians and Drell all just seem too human to be the result of convergent evolution.
I am wondering how many parts of this assertion are distended from my premises about "reality that is not human".
