What exactly does cartoony imply? Color scheme? Tone? Artistic styling? Nothing is really set as a standard for a cartoon, there are some bright and colorful and others which are dark and dreary. There are various types of styles used from ultra realistic to completely comical. And how are we applying the term here, as an insult? Hell some of the most visually stunning works of visual media I've ever seen have been cartoons.

I've seen people throw this term around quite a bit, hell I may have done it once or twice. But it seems like an odd term to use when creating an opinion of a certain style, even more so when using it in a negative tone.

Art direction is a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. The graphics fidelity MIGHT be better but the style seems lacking to me. I liked the dark tone of Origins, Too bright and textures seem intentionally bland in some cases. As either part of the quest for DA to "have its own visual identity" or just bad design, I do not think DA2 will be as good as a DAo or Mass Effect visually.

Cartoony is a tough word but I get your meaning and agree that it is a step in that direction.

I agree. Judging by what i've seen so far, the new art style seems like a step backwards.

And cartoony is just the word i've been thinking about lately. Everything seems a bit less real than in DA and i love realistic graphics (not necessarily fighting though). And somehow i can't say i liked any of the characters shown, only Fenris and both female and male Hawkes seem ok. So in my opinion yes, it is becoming more cartoony and i don'y like it.

But of course we have yet to see the final product...

cartoony? No. Not at all.
More stylized? Yes, and that's a good thing.

This time it's just not 101 shades of grey/brown ;) (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea).

The whole "it's like anime" comment is moot. Since, like everything else, anime has a very diverse range of styles from hilariously bad to semi-realistic.

I'm personally on the edge regarding it. Like a poster said before, the skin texture isn't working it for me. It's too clean and, I guess, plasticity. But Origins wasn't much to look at either, so I'll take what I can get. There's some improvement, at least.

I wouldn't use "cartoony" as the word to describe it, but most of the art direction has been a miss rather than a hit for me. So far, only Sebastian's outfit looks the part I'd expect from this game.
When looking at the Qunari, however, I don't see cunning, tactical warriors clad in glinting steel armor. I see almost naked barbarians. Which is a kick in the stablished lore.

Or the fact that everyone's hair is static. Frizzy hair doesn't exist in Thedas.

I wish people would stop saying anime as if it's one monolithic style.

So far the only anime I can think of that looks like DA2 is Record of Lodoss War, as it also went for the whole dark, European fantasy schitck

..aaand great, I'm now on a nostalgia run, thanks so much.

Berserk's anime style would be an improvement from what has been shown.

I understand people saying the combat video looked like a cartoon, but why the screenshots?

I got the cartoony impression too, and I thought it was great! It struck me as suiting the game so well. It felt fresh and well put-together. It's one of the things making me look forward to the game.

Depends upon what part of the story the art was imported from. The first few volumes? Hell no. The latest chapters that have pages which look like they took weeks to do? Hell yes.
Then again Berserk makes almost everything better.

I should have specified I meant the ones that don't look like Kentaro Miura's high school drawings. Yes, I meant the latter installments looks.

If the new art style is cartoony I don't think there can be cartoony enough. It is awesome.

To be honest, I can't see what's cartoony about DAII. I see the new art direction as a big step in the right direction. There's only so much brownness and blandness I can take before it becomes boring and I stop paying attention to all the details in the world around me. I love the color splash that DAII seems to have received. Whoever signed off on that is my new hero! Hopefully the world will feel more alive this time.

One can never have too many colors in a videogame. The new animations are a smidge too chaotic, but the colors are very welcome.

I have no strong feelings either way towards the new art style, much like I did with the old art style.

While some of the textures we've been shown do seem quite low res, I will refrain from judging until I can play the game myself on the highest settings. It's not like I ever played Bioware games for the graphics, anyway.

So my answer to the question "Do you think DAII is too cartoony?" is "I don't know, and even if it were I wouldn't care."

Looks cartoony as hell (see: less realistic) and flat. Just look in the side by side comparison shots in some other threads.

Reminds me more of Guild Wars 2 than Dragon Age.

I absolutely hate it, and it might be the final nail for me.

I think the visual style of the animations and magical effects actually IS pretty japanese in the brightness, SIZE and intensity. I mean, they are huge. Gore effects are spectacularly cool though for the tons of people who enjoy that sort of thing. My one nephew will be on the bandwagon for that alone. lol

You can tell people either consciously or subconsciously see *some* sort of connection because suddenly everyone is all talking about final fantasy or anime or having a lot of angst if they dislike either for whatever reason.

I have only played one or two final fantasy and I am not an anime fan as I have never really stopped to watch anyway.... but to me, *some* of the animation did remind me of FF ( because that is where my japanese game knowledge ceases, played a few korean games though I guess.... You are missing the huge numbers sailing by on the screen though and a more techy style to the typeface... I don't *necessarily* think it is a bad thing, although ... IF you see a similarity depends on the person. Many wouldn't.

I am not sure it is the colours, but you can tell they also decided to make the people not blend into the backgrounds as much. I can't say I am a fan of that..... YET. Like the people on that shiny white ice/stone (not sure) surface in the gameplay demo? With the ground that reflected some overhead light source?? Not a huge fan of that...again, yet. I may end up one, who knows? I am open to it until I try it and formulate an opinion based on my own experience though. This is just pre-emptive, and though I too am prone to it, I try to withhold *permanent* opinion.

A good game though, can improve the experience despite graphical preference immensely. Great graphics don't make a bad game good though. IF i had to choose, I would choose a good game.

There were people that complained that my mods bring anime and WoW into the world that should not be tainted by those things. Why I have a feeling that people who do not like DA2 style are of the same sort.

Realism in DAO- rivers of Tarantiono like blood from everything and 3 meters fatality jumps in full plate armor (which by itself ,a very cruel joke in a world without visible horses) are indeed very, very realistic. But, to each his own.

I agree that Origins was too brown in areas.  Denerim, yes, that failed for me visually and was 100% improved in Leliana's Song just by being at night.  But there were some beautiful areas in Origins which were not brown at all so that criticism can be exaggerated.  Here's an example.

Anyway, I've liked the shots I've seen of DA2 scenery, it's rather the character faces and combat animation where I cringe.  In fact it's all the more apparent that they look fake and plastic-y because of the details you can see in the background setting.  I'm also not fond of the spiky armor.  I can understand the wish to have a unified visual look, but that can easily become monotonous too.

I think it is. I much prefer a more realistic style, and for this series, one that maintains the feel of medieval europe. I liked the 'almost, but not quite' parallels. I thought it added to the game. I didn't have a problem with the colors in DA:O. It looked natural to me, and unlike Sebastian's armor, it didn't hurt my eyes. Primary colors are all well and good in real life, but on a computer screen, they're a bit much.

No. I think its a bit smoother texture which leads people to believe its less 3D looking, but I don't think its ~cartoony~
