It has been about a year since I have been able to play, and it appears that I have forgotten so very much. My fingers are used to playing DAO, and I have to mentally recall to left and right click as needed. My first attempt at a build became flawed, and all in all I am behind the curve again.

What are some recommended nwn.ini settings? I remembered to set Max HP = 1, but cannot recall any other advised changes.

Any helpful Tech tips will be greatly appreciated. Now back to try and find a decent Video graphic setting for this widescreen monitor.

nVidia GeForce 240GT or Higher is a good graphics card - I havent found any game that it cant run.

In regards to nwn.ini settings, is that not the ini that sets folder paths?

Do you mean nwnplayer.ini ?

Also, if you are running a server locally, you may need to set nwserver processor affinity to 0x01.

Use either imagecfg.exe or, if it works for you, use the ini setting - cant remember it off hand.

er...I have a nVidia 9800 GT, so graphics are covered, but I have no clue of the other stuff.

The nwn.ini file is the one with all the =0 or =1 options such as Max HP and the like, I believe.

I have not played yet; have not even chosen a final graphic setting yet as I have a newish monitor, and am still getting used to moving from 800x600 settings.

Try updating drivers at the nVidia site; could not hurt, I believe.

Haha,

Its funny you mentioned updating drivers

As far as nVidia are concerned, updating your drivers CAN hurt.

Last year, they released a patch, that made nwn load up a black screen. It was a case of having to use the older patch/drivers.

If its not broke, dont try to fix it.

Next question: the entire Game Interface is missing (ie; Portrait, Quickbar, etc), and hitting the 'H' key is not bring it back. Any suggestions?

What did you do to get it to not appear?

I mean, did it appear before now, or has it been like this since you installed nwn?

It could be a case of having to reinstall nwn, but thats like the Navy just turning their radio's off and on to fix a fault.... doesnt intuitivly diagnose the problem, just might have a chance of fixing it.

I do not recall seeing it at all; just finally realized I could not load the Hotkeys.

I reinstalled everything for the third time (I hates to input three lines of passcode, too), and this time managed to complete each indv step; still no luck. The Character Portrait, Quickbar, etc is still MIA.

Bueller?

You're not dumping anything EXTRA in to the override directory, are ye my lord?

FP!

The only stuff in the Override is the stuff from Bioware via install and patching. Should these be dumped, too?

There should be 9 files from BW in there iirc. (They are only loadscreeens so if you do remove them nothing terrible should happen, but leave them there is better.)

So, the problem is you have no GUI at all? I have never heard of that!

Ummm, double check under key settings that "h" is mapped as the toggle gui key? Perhaps it got remapped somehow and now there is no key to turn the GUI back on?

...And the game plays ok and you can see your character and the right textures and everything, just no GUI?

I'll keep thinking but.... that's weird.

Based on some other tips, I have resized my game with a different resolution, and am able to see the GUI while in Window mode, but not on full screen. The next suggestion is to add and run Win XP simulator to see if that will fix the issue. As this will require more download time, I will wait for an off day.

Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode plus another install has the game kinda working with the GUI.

But the graphics settings have to be turned wayyyy down, the game appears in a window slightly larger than a postcard, lag is visible even on character creation, etc; not so much fun.

Any more helpful tips?

I reistalled yet again, and this time I am able to play in Window mode; about 1/3 of Full Screen. If I enlarge to full, the GUI vanishes.

Anyone know a helpful way to increase the size of the Window to a setting less than full?

Well, this is weirder than my Freezing Creatures! Never heard of anything similar!

Anyway, I'm afraid I can't help you much in this matter. However, your initial post dealt on recommended settings, and after reading many of the contributors' take on this I must say it is a matter of perception and taste.

I have a GTX 285 and my NWN runs at about 30-60 FPS on a Full HD Samsung 32" LCD. If you turn off the V-Sync, you can get anything, from 35 to 100 fps, with an average of about 40. If your monitor supports a high refresh rate (about 120 htz) you may do just fine with V-Sync de-activated (from the NVidia control panel, not the in-game option).

Now, why do I have such low performance with this video card when some of the earlier posters mentioned a 240GT is good enough? Simple: Custom content. If you use many, many, many high-polygon models, high resolution textures (higher than the original, of course), and all visual settings at their highest (not only the in-game options, but those included in the NVidia control panel, overriding native ones), a 240GT or older GPU doesn't look that well...

If you add to it a FarSeeingGrass option of say... 6000, suddenly, a GTX 285 doesn't sound so great either. So bear in mind what kind of settings/content you're up to. If you're used to the graphical quality of Age of Dragons, olde NWN may look quite lame in it's original form. Hell, I'm not a fan of visual quality over other aspects (mainly why I still play NWN after all these years!) but you have to take all of this into consideration. I don't know about you, but I think games are meant to be played at their top-most config without any problem when it comes to performance. NWN's noble platform has spawned a tradition of personalization and customizing; it would be a waste not to peruse the results borne over a decade of modding.

Anyway, as I said, it's all a matter of taste and perception... and money... and the body parts you're willing to lose to acquire such money. (Why is it people don't believe I've actually sold organs to get my new PC?)

Good luck with your GUI problem, and may you join us soon in the Forgotten Realms!

From the little I understand of Tech, as I am using a LCD monitor, higher refresh rates are not required; those were needed for my older CRT monitor.

My current graphics card is great, but trying to use XP mode was like trying to play one game within another game within another game. Now I have it working in Win7 mode, but still must use Window to see the GUI. The only setting lost to graphics was Shiny Water, but I did this voluntarily to prevent issues.

And I totally agree with the money factor. After being robbed last year, I am unable to toss much additional funds about this year, esp at an older game. I could add another dupe graphics card to this system, as well as obtaining another drive, further upgrades. etc; just not wise considering current debt vs limited income.

My current take is that I am able to play solo, but m/p will be ll but impossible due to realtime play issues.

Hey Elhanan,

Long time no see.

I had a problem similar to yours, and I'm running a GeForce 9800 GT video card in Windows 7. What cured it for me was experimenting with screen resolutions until I found a combination that made both the game and the monitor happy. I'm using a Dell ST2410 23 inch flat panel monitor. Monitor resolution is 1600x900. Game resolution is 1360x768.

Good luck, and I hope you get it figured out soon.

HUZZAH! It will still take some tinkering for font size and all that, but reducing the monior settings allows all NWN1 settings possible; GUI included!

Thanks! May you never need to refill your Harley again!

Next Q: I have downloaded the CEP 2.3, as well as the CEP Updater, but do not know how to install them. Since the CEP is so huge, I do not wish to unwrap it incorrectly, as the other file took a few minutes to sweep up and dump.....

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly you just run the updater file. It should be an executable. I placed both the CEP file, in 7zip format, and the updater in the Neverwinter Nights/NWN directory and just clicked on the updater file.

Of course it does not work for me. I have spent most mornings this past week manually moving Saved files to the NWN1 files; horrible! What happened to User-Friendly, New, and Improved for a 10+ yr old game?!!
