ALSO, the fact that Witch Hunt had two mentions of Anders when there were no mentions of any of the other characters also, in my opinion, counts as a point in favour of him being in DA2.

Which mentions were these?? I heard the one about mage exercise being cancelled because Anders jumped in the lake and swam for it Image IPB. But what's the other?

A book in the library has some graffiti in the margins that shows templars being mauled by a cat or some such.

Haha, wonder if it was Mr Wiggums!

So you mean this could be Fiona's son and Alistair really was son of a chamber maid?

DG did say we'd learn what happened to Fiona and Maric.

I'm going to stop thinking about it now.

He's probably not Fiona's son. David Gaider said he was too old to be Duncan's son (when someone theorized he could be the child of Duncan and the mage he met in the tower at the beginning of The Calling), Fiona's son would be at least a couple weeks younger than any hypothetical child Duncan could have from that encounter.

Sometimes I feel like the only one who didn't like Merrill.  I don't know why exactly, I just didn't like her.  *shrugs*

She's abrasive. There's really not very much time or dialog to get past that.

As far as old characters showing up in DA2: I'm all for cameos and such, but I'm not fan of them being party members. It can throw off the game's continuity, which irks me no end. I was iritated when I learned that DA2's Isabela and the chick at the Pearl in Origins are one and the same. I'm not too sure why. But at least they appear to have gotten her a better voice actress.

I liked Anders. He made me wish there'd been romance in Awakening (although, not as much as Nathaniel did). But that said, I hope this guy isn't him.

In any case, that would mean a potential three DAO characters as companions. I think that's way too much. I want new companions, not a bunch of my old ones. What would be the point as playing Hawke, in a new country, with a new story, if I'm just bringing the same people.

Any character who was previously a party member that we bring back as a party member again will be because we thought there was more to explore with them.

Minor characters from DAO, such as Isabela, are a different situation entirely. You barely got to know them, if at all. To assume that there's nothing more to them than the sliver you encountered is to ignore the fact that we can have whole new stories for them-- and the connection to DAO gives us a nice base to jump off of.

That's not to say that assumptions expressed in this thread are necessarily correct, I'm just saying that I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea, if I were you.

I find it amusing how you brought all the pointless characters back yet nothing about the important ones, bravo. series reboot?

I could see Anders playing a part in the mage war, keep in mind the game last's ten years so Anders could show up in the middle.

Hard to say yea or nay. Instead, I will go back to the very first thought that ran through my head when we met Anders in Awakening:
I calmly noted the resemblance (it's the nose, I tell ya-- look at that nose) that he bears to Alistair and then evaluated his whiny-yet-amusing tendencies through my head. I took note of his use of uncanny comic relief and that was IT. I screamed at the top of my lungs at 9:00 at night, to my computer:
"Holy sh--! How many of these THINGS did Maric make?!"
Not to insult Anders or Alistair. But, frankly, I think Maric's got more than one bastard child running around.
I BET THERE'S A WHOLE ARMY OF EM, AND THEYLL WIPE OUT THE DARKSPAWN ONE DAY. :D
And I really do mean that. There's gotta be a surplus of 'em hidden away in mundane lives everywhere.

Omg I must have missed these when I played Witch Hunt! Now I love Anders even more. <3

I've gotten so used to the possibility of the mage guy being Anders that I know I'll probably be bummed if it isn't him after all. I also know I I'd love for there to be a sidequest with Anders where he's perhaps searching for a cure to the Darkspawn taint. My Hawkette would help him without hesitation. (I say this because it makes me sad to imagine lovable Anders dying a lonely death in the Deep Roads one day :crying:)

When my hubby got Awakening and started playing it my female warden was in the middle of the Alistair romance. I just couldn't play Awakening and still haven't. I guess it's just because Alistair is the DA:O romance that I like the most and when I saw Anders I couldn't stop seeing Alistair =)

Thankfully now it's been a little while =) since I didn't play Awakening I don't know how much of a Ali-vibe there was in game. If it is in deed Anders I hope that I won't get any Ali-vibes from him this time around =)

Personality-wise he reminded me more of Zevran than Alistair (if I had to pick one), really. I mean, Anders and Alistair are both "funny" but Anders has more of a sarcastic thing going. The majority of his jokes are poking fun at other party members while Alistair is more goofy and self-deprecating. When Anders is negative it's less angst or sadness, more anger and bitterness.

What hints are given about Anders' morality make it pretty clear he's pretty far from sheltered and virginal... and probably not the most consistently ethical person around, really. (let's say you meet an old 'friend' of his... and it seems clear he probably did something to REALLY tick her off)

Not that he comes across as a d-bag or anything (well, obviously I wouldn't think so since I'm a huge Anders fan). I just feel like he's much more 'flawed' as an individual as well as a lot more worldly than Alistair.

What Lupus said. Also, I shall say it again, because I can, DG has said that the resemblance between Anders and Alistair is purely coincidental. IE: HE ISN'T MARIC'S. And his humour is vaguely like Alistair's but the rest of his personality isn't at all like Alistair. Anders flirts, he's openly frightened of stuff (claustrophobia) he's morally ambiguous (willing to pass up the confrontation with the baronness - his dealings with the Templars) and selfish (doesn't care about the plight of the mages except insofar as it concerns HIM).

Alistair on the other had is your typical white knight, chivalrous, honourable and good. And he's innocent. And although he flirts he's not.. well, not like Anders :). So.

After experiencing another bout of boredom, I decided to mess around with a closer shot of "Anders" again to see if I could make the "earring" look more obvious. Not sure if the program I use matters, but it's PSP. The only messing around I did included sharpening, a curve layer or two, and some tweaking with the brightness and contrast levels. I'm also including a different comparison pic 'cos, you know, mage robes with blue feathers make every post better!

Image IPB Image IPB

The "earring" should be more obvious by itself, but still drew in an arrow pointing to it, anyway. Also wanted to point out that in my earlier comparison shot comment, forgot to mention that they do have the same hairstyle, identical down to the center bangs, which have been smoothed back. Looks to be about the same golden blonde hair colour, too. So, I'm quite confident in saying that "Anders'" hair is indeed in a ponytail. Oh, and I want to add that they totally have the same lips. Image IPB As for why I didn't notice earlier, I'll, uh, chalk it up to old age. Ugh, old at 30... damn, that's sad. Anybody seen my cane?

With all joking aside, if I was a bettin' femme, I'd lay a cool mill on the guy in that group screenshot being THE Anders. Seriously, Bioware's not cruel enough to give false hope to his fans by putting in a guy who looks so remarkably like THE Anders for him to turn out to be just another golden blonde, single-earringed, pony-tailed mage who likes to wear blue robes with blue feathers adourned on the shoulders, aye? ... Okay, so they are cruel enough, but that doesn't mean they'll do it this time. In the words of Zevran Arainai, "What can I say? I'm an eternal optimist." Optimism wins over cruelty every time, didn't you know? Image IPB

I agree on all counts, and not just because I want it to be Anders. While he might not be a full blown companion, he's at least present at some point of some iteration of DAII.

Anders definitely isn't Alistair personality-wise (looks-wise, that's a different story altogether, but I digress). He comes off as being witty and sarcastic, and while Alistair could be both of those things, it only usually came out when fun was being made at his expense, and otherwise he was genuine or curious at times... On the other hand, Anders seems to snag every chance he gets to crack a joke or to make a witty comment. He prides himself in being intelligent. Most of his life is spent around stuffy Templars after all! He had to cope with it somehow.

Morality-wise, I think while he generally isn't a horrible person, he's looking out for his own interests first and has a tendency to be ... cowardly? Not a great word for it, but he's rather cautious, and for good reason. He's also a little non-committal and dislikes restrictions placed upon him, such as the Circle, or even being a Grey Warden to an extent (where duty and the promise of death become the bars of his cage). He may not be a very consistent friend at first... but I think the trust is earned and reciprocated, he really does appreciate company. I think he would enjoy anyone who didn't immediately accuse him of being some kind of power-mad freak right off the bat.

tl;dr, not like Alistair at all. And an interesting addition to DA2, if it were only true.

I'm almost 90% confident Anders is going to be returning and an LI, with the screen evidence and Cassandra's 'book' evidence in tow. It'll be an interesting twist if ALL of the characters had LI potential.

And to all those deterants who claim "Yea but he can get killed in Awakening! Make no lick of sense!" keep in mind the Devs are fully capable of 'altering' certain endings. 'Anders appeared to be dead at the standoff in order to escape the Templars' etc etc. Its not too far a stretch, considering the amount of redesign they did for a lot of other characters (Isabela, Merrill) and races (elves)... They've already retconned quuuiiite a bit.
