Anders is annoying, why would they bring back crappy companions and not bring back the actual good ones from DAO and Awakening?

I'm almost 90% confident Anders is going to be returning and an LI, with the screen evidence and Cassandra's 'book' evidence in tow. It'll be an interesting twist if ALL of the characters had LI potential.

And to all those deterants who claim "Yea but he can get killed in Awakening! Make no lick of sense!" keep in mind the Devs are fully capable of 'altering' certain endings. 'Anders appeared to be dead at the standoff in order to escape the Templars' etc etc. Its not too far a stretch, considering the amount of redesign they did for a lot of other characters (Isabela, Merrill) and races (elves)... They've already retconned quuuiiite a bit.

I'll honestly be surprised if the blond male human mage in that screenshot isn't Anders, but I'm not going to get too attached to the idea.

But really, the guy was hanging with Ser Pounce-a-lot, OF COURSE he can come back from apparent death!

Because there are no universally loved or hated companions? Anyone they brought back would be considered crappy by someone.

Really, we see a lot of confirmed companions in that screen shot. We have Fenris, Varric, Sebastian, Isabella, Hawke, Bethany, and that Female Templar that starts with A.

The only people we don't know in that screenshot is the Templar, and the Anders-look a like.

And frankly, Anders' hair is much too short in that screenshot. Looks like a buzzcut to me, so it saddens me to say it; but he doesn't strike me as a returning character from that shot...

Looking at the mystery person in Varric's book from the latest trailer I'd saw there is a good chance it could be Anders. Its obviously a human male mage and the collar fits the one that 'Anders' is wearing in the screenshot. The only difference is the hair, which is either a) someone with 2 large strands of hair down the front of their face (Both the real, and speculated Anders have 2 very small strands out in front of their hair but no where near as long as the person in Varric's book).
or B) Someone with their hair that just makes that shape, hanging down. (Maybe Anders with his hair not in a ponytail?)

You can't see it very well on this picture (the bottom right side of the hair is cut off) but anyway (Anders is the one in the middle, at the bottom):

Well considering that Merrill's picture in the book shows that she has bangs in front of ears when she does not, I think these pictures are mere illustrations, exaggerated slightly just for style (well, duh, LOL... call me Miss Obvious).  I think what says "that's Anders" to me is the pulled back hair along with the widow's peak... but hey, they could just be making a male mage that looks a LOT like him for one reason or the other.

It would be great if he was a companion, which, considering he is standing next to Aveline, Isabela, Varric, and Fenris, is entirely possible.

As for how he ended up in a Templar-dominated city, that's another question.

I also noticed in that screenshot that Hawke is wearing the "Champions" mage armor. You can tell because it isn't leather, doesn't have the chainmail, and does have a fur hood looking thing. I am quite confused by this because Bethany is in that shot also, and I was under the impression that Bethany DIES for sure if you play as a mage...
Anyway, I hope Anders is in the game, he was awesome.

Probably grey warden related business my guess would be that it somehow tied in with Nathaniel Howe, seeing that he's reapperence has been mentioned.

Yeah I was thinking that too, It could just be stylized, though I doubt they would exaggurate his hair THAT much.

He's here to learn that he's Alistair's brother I hope :D

So you mean this could be Fiona's son and Alistair really was son of a chamber maid?

DG did say we'd learn what happened to Fiona and Maric.

I'm going to stop thinking about it now.

That's what I've thought for a long time since I learned it was impossible for Alistair to be Fiona's kid since they were born years apart. That would explain why Anders has the same exact coloring as Alistair and similar facial features.

David Gaider has said that Anders is not related to Alistair or Maric, and any resemblance is a coincidence.

He's also said that Anders is not the child of Duncan and the mage he has a dalliance with in the tower in The Calling (specifically saying Anders is too old to be Duncan's theoretical child. Which would make him too old to be Fiona's child as well).

Also, the years were incorrect in early editions of The Calling. The corrected version would have Fiona's baby at about 19 years old in 9:30 Dragon. Which seems a pretty accurate estimation of Alistair's age, if you ask me.

I hadn't read all the posts yet when I posted. Blame the art department then.

Loghain's dialogue still contradicts the that theory, since Rowan was alive when Alistair was born and dead when Maric impregnated Fiona. So Alistair is not Fiona's son.

Originally Alistair was, in game, sort of a paranoid, bitter 30 year old (*ahem* Carth *ahem*). He tested badly in focus groups and was completely redone. I think that line is a holdover they missed.
If Rowan was alive when Alistair was born he would b at least mid to late 20s or so at the start of the game. That old but still hadn't taken his final vows as a templar seems kind of late (and would take him from sort of charmingly innocent to disturbingly immature, IMO).

Loghain = not the most truthful person in the game. Also he doesn't say Rowan was alive, just that having a bastard would have shamed her. Which is different. It may well have shamed her memory to have her husband carrying on out of wedlock.

Devs have said Alistair is early 20s.  So not born while Rowan was alive.  Either Loghain is speaking metaphorically of Rowan's memory or as someone upthread said, it was a holdover when Alistair was supposed to be 30ish.  And in my suspicion originally meant to be Katriel's son.

On topic, I don't think Anders and Alistair are alike at all.  Both have a bit of cynicism and laddishness, but think about it.  Alistair is all about duty and Anders says it's his right to be apathetic about causes, even his own.

I am not bothering to scroll thru and read all of the posts. I will be super excited to see Anders in DA2 if that is in the cards. If not, lets hope the new mage does not have massive SUCK power. Sorry is late, and can not think of better adjectives at this time.

I for one want it to be Anders, not just because he's a great character, but also because one of the possible endings is that Anders joins the ship of a certain female pirate captain. Of course reading that, it's obvious they're referring to Isabella. Considering this equation below, how could they not put him in the game?

Awesome character + awesome character = epic dialogue conversations.

So the game is full of inconsistencies and we can't trust anything we're told as valid lore. Bleh. I give up.

They were obviously planning ahead for dragon age 2 when they were doing awakening.
