Hi guys, I've finally started playing ME1 recently.  I'm trying to get into the game, but I'm dying alot since leaving the Citadel.  So far I've completed Feros and recruited Liara.  It seems like I'm having to redo a lot of the "plot" combats since I die so fast without really seeing what happened.  Is there any way to slow things down, or is this something I'll get used to as the game progress?  I'm starting to wonder if this is just not my game, since having to redo so much of the game is really sapping my enjoyment of it.  Is ME2 any better in this regard?  I picked it up over Christmas when it was on sale before realizing this with ME1 (I bought ME1 years ago in the bargain bin).

Any suggestions appreciated.

Maybe you have the difficulty set up to high, you should check that, especially as a newbie. Also it could have something to do with your class and armour/shields. Try messing with those a little in your inventory, maybe up your shields a bar or two. (maybe you have a power that helps with the shields as well)

And while fighting make good use of cover, that'll let your shields regen if you don't let yourself get hit too often.

Just don't give up, it's a good game.

Are you doing any of the side missions? Are you avoiding them? They're not the sexiest thing in the world or anything, but they give you experience just the same and it's maybe better to tackle those first instead of just doing a lot of the story planets.

Check difficulty like was said above. I didn't have too much problem with Vetran myself on a first play through, but if that's too much then lower it.

Also, the auto save in ME1 is one of the worst I've ever seen. They completely fixed that in ME2 but in ME1 just save after every encounter of more than a couple enemies. I too hate doing mundane crap over and over again, so saving is your friend.

Thanks guys, I'll double check the difficulty. I thought I had it set on easy, but we'll see. Oilking I totally agree with you on the saving, and I have started doing this. I usually don't do too many side missions, but I might have to change that. I wish there was a better way to direct mysquadmates in using their powers. I think that would help if I had more tactical control over them.

I think there's a toggle for squadie powers, but it's either they use them on their own or only as you tell them.

What I mean is I have trouble picking targets when I'm controlling powers. Typically there is a more dangerous foe in a pack of henchmen (asari clones mixed in with the thralls on Feros for instance). Typically when I want control, I'm trying to lock down one foe in a group, and it's just such a mess trying to target that one foe.

Ah, well, that's just bad programming. I don't think it can be helped, expect maybe by timing your strategic pauses just right so that the clone is out in the open.

I to found the game difficult to adapt. The ai for the geth is very predictable, troopers move forward, the rocket guys advance but at a slower rate, and so on. Side missions were very difficult to adapt as the merc, krogan moved aggressively at me, switch weapons as they close the distance and then move to cover. Advancing the party is less fluid than the opponents. My character is always lead and squad follows behind, not always using cover. So I end up with pause-reposition, advance forward, focus fire/combine powers on single targets, always moving. Once your team moves at the enemy you can get the targets to retreat rather than move at your team.

I found that keeping power use for defense prevented squad from dumping everything on the first random target rather than my target of choice. I would not hesitate to use a squad member as point to draw fire, positioning them to a distant point thru the line of fire. Preferably one with immunity/damage reduction.

As my team had a few powers/amor/immunity skill levels with "descent" weapons, attacking with out so much pausing/repositioning became easier and my reload frequency lessened.

I wished I had better individual control of my squad mates, actually selecting and seeing what they see and are targeting to better move them, but the game is not that way.

Keep experimenting with power combinations and squadmate combo's and you will find something that suits your style.

A few more things to check:

1) Try and do as many side-missions as possible to gain valuable experience before wading into the harder main storyline fights.

2) Make sure you level up. It may sound stupid, but I remember a game critic (and a pretty good one too) complaining the game was too hard only to discover he had never leveled up his characters skills... A level 1 Shepard will never get through Noveria.

3) Tweak your inventory every chance you get. Don't pack rat: get rid of obsolete armor and weapons but hang on to a decent variety of ammo/weapon upgrades, as different upgrades will work on different opponents. Tungsten rounds work well against synthetics but have no advantage against organics, etc...

Another thing to check, is that you and your sqyadmates are actually using weapons you are tranied in. For example, Kaiden can equip an assault rifle, but he doesnt have training in it, so he sorta kinda sucks at using it. Same goes if you are playing an Adept. You can equip assault/sniper rifles, but you wont use them very well.

Also, make use of the tactical pause option. On PC, that means using left shift. Dont know what the Xbox control for it would be.

I would try to bring along the better squadmate types. If this is your first playthrough, and you don't have good armor, get Garrus higher with a decryption skill so you can get some loot and find guns/armor/upgrades. And use Wrex or Ashley as your second squadmate, and just level up the more combat-oriented things.

Get Pistols all the way up if You Can! They are the best weapon except assault rifles, which are better when they can infinite-fire. (I forget what upgrades I have on my Spectre Gear assault rifle to make it do that.)

Get your armor up! Protection can make or break you, so go sell useless armor and improve the better ones. I would recommend the requesitions officer at C-Sec.

DO THE ROUGE VI MISSION! This is a necessity. Go to the galaxy map and go to Sol. This puts you in our solar system. Go to the moon. At the end of this mission you get to pick your class! Commando or Shock Trooper in my case, since I was a soldier.

And against fast-moving enemies, holding down right bumper( Xbox 360 version) and then aiming at them then letting go and repeating those steps works nicely. This is great on the end-game boss.(No Spoilers)

Hey Falross, I'm not sure which platform you are playing the game on, but if on PC, there is a technique I like to use to better target enemies.  If you pull up the Tactical HUD Screen (while in combat), press right click on your mouse and hold it down.  This should allow you to move the cross hairs around and select various enemies. Once you target the specific enemy you can then launch your power attack.  I realize this lacks the real-time feel of a shooter/action game, but it works.

Thanks Kepd1. I'll give that a shot. At this point, the "real-time feel" is what's getting me dead, so it's not exactly a priority :P.

In other news, I'm getting into Dragon Age: Origins, and so far this game feels like a much better fit for me and my non-existant twitch reflexes.

It also largely depens on what class you're playing. If you're playing as a soldier and simply level up assault rifles and get the max immunity ability... you're pretty much indestructible. Still I wouldn't recommend getting in the way of a geth armature/colossus emp cannon.

Also what kind of skills are you using? I found in my first playthrough I wasted a lot of points on skills I wasn't going to use all that often. Like putting points on both pistols and assault rifles while I was only going to use the assault rifle. Having a tech in your party to use overload and sabotage can also get you through hard fights, same goes for a biotic. Also when facing husks or thorian creepers it can be wise to equip all your party members with shotguns as shooting an enemy with a shotgun up close will knock them down, making them unable to attack.

Other than that: Get the best armor and weapons you can get. Upgrade your armor with shields/damage protection or medical interfaces (if your no soldier) and upgrade all your weapons with incendiary ammo (IMO the best ammo upgrade)

Hope this helps you a bit

I'm playing a soldier and until the other day, I had everyone auto-levelling up. I've moved back to manual control of this, so we'll see how this goes. I'm about lvl 17 or so.

^Good job, always turn auto level off. And you're level 17 and you've completed feros and therum already? That's pretty much the problem. I'm doing a FemShep playthrough atm (infiltrator if you want to know) and she's about level 30. Picked up liara, just getting ready to do feros now. I think that's your big problem right there, you're not doing enough assignments and planet scanning. Also, when in the mako, get out and kill enemies on foot. You get only 50% of the xp when you kill an enemy in the mako. But since this is your first playthough I'm not expecting you to engage thresher maws, geth armatures/colossus and turrets/geth primes (All give good xp) on foot so I'd stick to doing a lot of assignments before you start doing noveria/virmire.

Small spoiler (you'll thank me later): Before you do virmire make sure you have done the quest: "Wrex:Family armor" and/or have 12 points in charm/intimidate, this is important. But don't attempt to do virmire/noveria until you're a much higher level - at least early 30s

To sum it up: Try to kill enemies on foot, not in the mako - damaging them is fine as long as the final blow is done on foot. Do lots of assignments, planet scanning and when on an uncharted planet visit all map markers and search for ore deposits (for credits and xp)

Everyone here has hit on all the good points, so I'll only add the following:

While you end up finding most all of your armor/weapons/upgrades for free during sidequests and storyline quests in locked crates and storage lockers (so long as you have a squadmate with maxxed-out decryption and electronics skills - i.e., Tali, Kaiden), the best weapons and armor you'll usually have to buy on the Citadel or from the Normandy quartermaster (if you don't know where he is, take the elevator on the crew deck down to engineering. The quartermaster is to your immediate right). The C-Sec requisitions officer (Citadel) and Normandy quartermaster are the only shops I know that sell Spectre weapons which are THE BEST, especially when upgraded. Since you're playing a soldier, get Spectre sniper rifles and assault rifles. Upgrade those with upgrades you find on missions, and you'll have an edge. To do this, you need CREDITS. Best way to get credits is, when you land on uncharted worlds, to find all mineral deposits and scan them. I know that sounds like a pain, but as you reach higher levels (i.e., 30-40 range), you start getting between 30,000 and 50,000 credits PER DEPOSIT scanned. The credits start pouring in that way, and you can outfit your squad with Spectre gear and better armor. Since minerals aren't marked on your map, just go to the Mass Effect Wiki, type the planet's name into the search bar, and the planet's article will have all the mineral deposits marked on it, so you don't have to go all over the place trying to find them.

Hang in there Falros...the Best suggestions have already been mentioned so I'll just add that I too wondered if it just wasn't my type of Game...then I got the hang of it and loved it!
I almost freaked when I saw the Game was WASD movement controlled because of my Clam-like reflexes...if I can do it and have fun...anyone can.

Thanks guys, I'll keep plugging away at it. I just hope the game didn't screw me over too much with the first 15ish lvls of auto-lvl.

^ It shouldn't have (I let ME2 auto-level my squad for 20 levels out of 30, and in the scheme of things it didn't amount to more than a minor annoyance), but if you feel it did, don't be afraid to delete your old career and start fresh. I've done that a couple times, in both ME1 and ME2, and it's helped my enjoyment of the games. Hang in there Falross, I guarantee that when you get the hang of ME1, you'll love it. Yes, there's a learning curve to the inventory and level-up systems, but once you get it down, you may find you enjoy this game more than any you've played before.

Hey guys, I just wanted to report back, and say that I finished ME1. What an ending! I have ME2, but I might take a bit of a break before I play it.
