Yes, I've heard that completely weak excuse before. It doesn't mean I have to think it's a good idea or should be done in this sort of thing. It bothers me less in the commercials, but for dev diary type stuff? I am pretty sure the people interested enough to watch that can hold the concept in their brain that the lady with the red smear on her face like the guy? She's Ms. Hawke.
EDIT: And I know that's how they marketed ME2. I hated it then as well. I just get really sick of being the Other Shepard and now the Other Hawke.
I agree. Okay no cgi trailers of female Hawke that I can live with, but a dev diary where a dev can explan "you can also play as a female" and we see a female Hawke saying 1 line of dialogue so we finally hear her voice
with the rest of dev diary still loaded with bearded male Hawke. I don't see how that could confuse anyone who isn't braindead. She would only be shown for a few seconds with explanation of who she is.
Well, I see your point. There has been a lack of footage with FHawke released from the devs. And we're all asking ourselves, what's the holdup? Are they purposely holding back to present MHawke first? And I believe the answer is, of course, yes. The majority of gamers are, in fact male and best identify with their own sex. I realize that this is not an excuse for FHawke to be presented later, but however. If you look at the marketing of Mass Effect I and II, as well as DA:O, it is simply in the numbers: marketing a male character works, and tests well with an audience.
As for why MHawke has been used in dev videos, truly, you can say the same thing--most gamers want "A", then we first show "A." Oh, and another point, remember how about a few months ago, when we saw demos that were being played in Europe, the graphics were much less defined, as well as a myriad of lots of other little problems that needed to be fixed. I like to think that perhaps the reasons why these dev vidoes were released so close to the release date was because of their late finish of the completed game.
So truly, if the devs released the vidoes earlier, would you be as angry about there being a lack of FHawke footage as you are now? I bet you that you wouldn't, you perhaps to a much lesser degree. So, I understand where you are coming from, lol. But I think, we all must understand that, even in dev videos, Bioware is first and foremost a buisness. And in buisness, you do not radically change a set pattern of production techniques that work. Would presenting FHawke as the posterchild of DA II be great? Yes,

, of course it would be. But-- in implimenting such a different tactic --even to us, the loyal DA fans, could it cause more adverse effects than to just continue to use MHawke?--very likely.
Its not that pleasant to say that, I know. But all I have to say for the future is that the percentage of women entering the gaming world is steadily rising, and with it will come an overhaul of game advertising, as well as design. And I can't wait for that to happen:D. But this is not something that will happen overnight--in fact it will take several more years. But, I must beg you not to be so quick to hate Bioware for 'not catering as much to female gamers,' because, from what I've seen, more than any other company out there, Bioware has practically pioneered the true integration of the female player into rpgs, both with their uttermost care to present the female character to be just as characteristically versitile as the male character, and to have her own set of memorable love interests.
So in parting, I have to just say, no worries, my friend. We are not quite there yet, but we are definately getting closer. <3
