Bethany.

If I want to be annoyed by somebody ****ing around I can still get Anders and Fenris in my party. I don't need Carver for that ;D

I love them both so I'd hate to actually have to choose. Still, Bethany would win in the end for me.

For the record I think they're both great characters.

Both are intrinsically unique. Carver isn't evil, he just is more of a rival to your Hawke. Always complaining about being in big sister/brother's shadow (depending on gender of the Hawke you play). Wanting to step out of said shadow but not taking any initiative to do so. Therefore complains about it and acts like a spoiled little twit.

Then there is Bethany, the quiet, soft spoken friendly sister who always got along with the eldest sibling. Didn't complain, always had a kind word... So yeah... both are awesome in their own way. I like them both for who they are.

As for choice... that's hard to decide since if we had to choose at the beginning of the game and if we were to say not know what Carver and Bethany were like, as we do now... it would still be a tough call. Because we wouldn't know which one to choose.

Carver, at least he's interesting and his endgame dialogue makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I don't understand the love for Bethany, she's rather dull.

This.

I wuv Carver.

Carver, because Bioware actually bothered to put friendship dialogue in there.

And if you take the time to actually make him a friend instead of doing the easy path and going full rival, he is actually a pretty cool brother.

Bethany OTOH, while awesome, is rather dull.

I really wish we could have kept them both. I'd have happily sacrificed Aveline to the Ogre instead.

I like both. Carver has the more interesting sibling relationship with Hawke and character dev, though (IMO!)

I'd be interested in switching them up with Hawke's class...Mage!Hawke/Bethany, nonMage!Hawke/Carver....but noooo, we can't do that!!!!!

I'll stick with Bethany. Aside from anything else, she has creation magic.

I can't say I really ever understood this "being a jealous dick = personality!" thing, or the inevitable conclusion that Bethany is somehow lacking in personality due to not spending the entire game sulking, but hey. To each their own.

Both are wonderful characters. I agree that we should have been able to sacrifice Aveline instead. Why does she exist whyyyyyyy hate hate hate

both. The story would've been stronger if both had lived and went with Hawke and Aveline.

Carver's growing on me with further playthroughs, and becoming less of an ass. However, I like the relationship between my Hawke and Bethany, so I choose her.

Ho, necropost.

I like both characters, but Bethany's self-loathing sort of grates on me and I think that the sibling dynamic with Carver is more interesting.

Carver. He's grown on me, especially after Legacy.

Carver. In fact I havn't been able to play none mage yet, because I miss my grumpy little brother who despite his complaining clearly still loves his older sister.

Do you ever find it wearing slightly though esper when you have both Carver and Anders bending your ears ?

Carver gets an unfair bad rep, but I would have to say Bethany anyway. Sunshine. <3

Carver. During my first DA2 run his endgame dialog almost made me cry.

Bethany is sweet, yes. Too sweet I'd say. She is made to be likable but I can't bring myself to like her.

Bethany at least is a little less annoying than Carver, both are extremely dull characters nevertheless.

So Beth.

Never thought I would say this, but Carver, I got enough friendship with him during my first playthrough that I got his friendship dialogue and have to say, that made him far more interesting.

Now don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with Bethany -- and I would rather take a mage, a healing mage, then a warrior anyday -- but being as I basically played a paragon playthrough it didnt create the interesting dynamic between her and Hawke. I could see glimpses of a more dynamic character in there but it never really surfaced -- if it had though I would have no arguments for picking Carver over her.

? English is not my first langue so I am not sure I understand the metaphor bending your ears a 100 %.

But I actually tend to agree with Anders on a lot of things so I don't see him as complaining so much. I don't see Fenris a complaining either, even though I don't agree with his points. Those two have been through a hard time and they have a right to not be happy-go-lucky persons. I actually like Anders passions and he first gets really bad and paranoid past act 1 were... well you properly know what happens at the end of act one, so I don't have to hear them both in the later acts.

You're saying he is worse on rival?
My goodness.

Bethany. She's the little sis I never had.

Carver, annoying as he can get with constantly being "in my shadow", was an excellent rival material.

*sight* What wouldn't I give to have both of them in my party. That you could only have one of them was to me THE stupidest decision made regarding DA2.

He's pretty much the same on rival as he is at the beginning.

Well, nobody in the party really likes him either. Aveline, I believe, even mentioned he's a bit of a ******. Image IPB

As opposed to friended? He was the same to me (max friend).
The only change I saw was if he became a warden (and it's not enough to redeem him as a character in my eyes). As a templar, he remains pretty much the (dull unsubtle) same. My impression at least.
