was merrill a blood mage in origins?

Nope, she had some fire spells and "weakness" from entropy (according to the wiki). She could have hidden her blood mage powers, of course.

And why a dalish would do that when no templar was nearby? Zathrian was a blood mage. No need why the dalish would forbid such things or see it as a taboo.

It's possible that blood magic is discouraged even among the Dalish. It would make sense. The Dalish have no love for the Chantry, but they do have common sense.

I agree, blood magic could be known to all Keepers but could be considered a  forbiden magic.

There's nothing inherently wrong with blood magic. It can be costly, but very useful if used correctly.

Ahh.

David Gaider wrote...

Under no circumstances do you actually conjure, summon, transmute, transmogrify, doodle or call any kind of animal into appearing to do your bidding.

David Gaider wrote...

As for teleportation, it's simply not something that magic can do. That's there as a rule as, while we want magic to be grand and powerful, we don't want it to trivialize the setting. Teleportation trivializes distance and obstacles (and makes it far too tempting for us to use for NPC's). Resurrection trivializes death. Certain things like mind control are allowed, but are considered abhorrent rather than 1st level spells that no-one thinks about.

David Gaider...

There is no time travel, nor magic that affects time directly. Just like there is no teleportation (not even for NPC's), no dimensional portals and no resurrection. Zounds! Amazing, I know.

If there is no teleportation through magic, what is with the mirror in which Morrigan disappeared?
Some kind of mirror world? The fade?

I have no idea. You're also not supposed to be able to come back from the dead yet Flemeth apparently can do so. The mirrors in the Dalish origins also seemed to be for teleportation.

I think Dragon Age would have been more interesting if they'd actually limited the things that magic can do.

um in the creation school the spell wisp line of spells is the summoning school yes? U can summon a wisp and a swarm of insects. Its also mentioned in a codex somewhere im sure that things summoned have only a limited lifetime too.

Also blood mages and dalish keepers can summon spirits too. Look at avernus and the mad hermit for example.

With zathrian he summoned the spirit of the forest and bound it to the great wolf witherfang using his blood. Sylvans are possessed trees and in one possible battle with zathrian he summons them and shades too. Velanna also summons sylvans in that cutscene in awakening.

I think maria caliban mightve been referring to the fact that a non-magical class like the rogue can summon animals out of thin air?

That thing on Merril's back? Not a staff.

It's a giant blunt.

It's actually a digeridoo. Merrill has such an adorably perky Australian accent.

Wait, Australian? I thought Dalish elves were going to have Welsch accents now. Sorry if someone else has mentioned that, though.

It's called plot magic, and can only be used when the writers need a convenient way to move the story.

except you COULD in origins, so how can it not be part of the lore unless it is retconned out...time travel and teleportation never were in Origins...besides I thought the idea behind the ranger summoning was essentially like the mabari whistle and not actually magic - though I honestly do not remember the actual description...

I think that, while direct teleportation doesn't exist, portals might.

If there is no teleportation, it was an illusion and Morrigan secretly snuck out :bandit:

I wish summoning spells were part of the lore. I like summoning spells. I also like time manipulation. (not necessarily time travel, per se, but slowing, stopping, speeding up? sure.)

Pretty much.

The same way that the lyrium at the Anvil of the Void split branka into a bunch of different versions of herself.

I guess, since it's gone, never mind...

Simple, the Rogue simply makes people think there is an animal there with the power of their MIND :wizard: and all attacks by the mind animal seem real to enemies and thus that is how ranger works:D

I always thought the ranger yelled time-out, and went off to search for a near by creature for battle.

I always figured the beasts summoned by the Rangers just merely got Aquaman'd into the battle.

Of course that doesnt explain how bears would get into the Deep Roads. But we dont need everything explained to us.

I just assumed the ranger spec was the mabari whistle before the mabari whistle...i mean how is our mabari whistle going to get our mabari in DA2 to come from our home in kirkwall to the deep roads anyway...no difference

I always thought the ranger spec was a load of bullocks, anyway.

Speaking of summoning, I think there's a difference between directly moving something here over there and causing a tear in the veil (something that happens rather easily, it seems) and pulling a demon/spirit through.

Agreed. I think all the Mages of Thedas should band together and create some kind of "Anti-Veil Tear" technology.

Oh wait, the Templars already created it. Its called a Sharp pointed object to the Torso.

I always thought they had the DragonAge equivalent of DnDs 'Bag of Tricks'. Whereupon the Ranger goes into the bag, pulls out the rather small, weatherbeaten (and malnourished) bear and forced said animal to fight for it's own selfish needs.

Although, now that I think about it, Merrill is kinda small: I wonder if she could fit into a bag?

I disagree, but then, I prefered the way magic was set up in Baldur's Gate 2.  Huuuge spell selection, wide variety of powers.
