Blood magic originates from demons, Avernus confirms this. Elven slaves taught the human mages how to enter the fade using lyrium, thus giving rise to the magisters. That's all we know. Nothing was ever hinted that blood magic was once a common use among the elves. Given the nature of demons they had just a good a reason to be wary of it as anyone else. Doubly so now that clans rely so much on their Keepers.

But they had nothing like the chantry or the templars. So how would you control demons which took over a dalish mage? Send them into exile?!

New theory: Merrill = Abomination  

Before Tevinter only elves knew magic, and humans learned it from them. How it is connected to demons I don't know. You need a spirit researcher for that.

It's also said that the Old Gods taught the Tevinter Imperium blood magic.

The connection between demons and blood magic is simple: because blood magic has been outlawed, sources of information on blood magic are few and far between. But the Fade is beyond the reach of the Chantry and thus demons still retain knowledge of blood magic gleaned from mortals. They barter with prospective blood mages for this information.

I hope the blood magic lives up to its name this time. Story-wise it's supposed to make spells more powerful, but in Origins all it did was switch out mana cost for health.

I liked the concept of sacrificing ally health to heal yourself, but I think it would have been even cooler if it also worked the other way around. Why does a blood mage always have to be so selfish? They have blood to share too...

Having it sacrifice Party health wouldnt be a good idea as they would ALWAYS do it at the worst time.

I don't think that finisher is exclusive to Hawke or blood mages. Bethany does it in some demo footage on an Ogre.

I wonder... do the hands in that spell change depending on what glove armour Hawke is wearing? In the trailer they were clearly Hawke's clawed gloves. If Merrill were to perform that spell, would we see her own hands?

Blood Wound was the best AoE spell in the game, at least the best that was efficiently cast.

And... not sure what you mean about a caster not using her own blood.  You lose health from casting blood magic spells, so you are draining your own life force to use them.
