I hope the blood magic lives up to its name this time. Story-wise it's supposed to make spells more powerful, but in Origins all it did was switch out mana cost for health.

I liked the concept of sacrificing ally health to heal yourself, but I think it would have been even cooler if it also worked the other way around. Why does a blood mage always have to be so selfish? They have blood to share too... Posted Image

Blood Wound was the best AoE spell in the game, at least the best that was efficiently cast.

And... not sure what you mean about a caster not using her own blood.  You lose health from casting blood magic spells, so you are draining your own life force to use them.

They are using their own blood, but I'd like to see them share it with allies in a sort of reverse Blood Sacrifice. If a Blood Mage can heal themselves with the blood of allies, they should be able to sacrifice their own blood to heal an ally as well.

I know the spell's primary use is to replenish health for further use of blood magic, but you won't be using blood magic (sustained) all the time so it might as well just be an alternate method of healing for everyone.

So I wonder, does that mean Merrill is not 'the girl next door' type character?

I wander if they may have been referring to Bethany, as I can't see anyone else fit the "virginal girl next door" archetype. Then again, they're probobly just messing with us.

I see what you mean, sort of a blood-driven Group Heal?  I guess it was a matter of only having 4 slots.  I am interested to see what they do with the school this time.

i'm pretty sure they were talking about romances when they said that line, so I think it's safe to assume they werent talking about Bethany. Perhaps there is literally an NPC that lives next to you in Kirkwall to romance.

This is true, in fact it could turn out to be the same sort of "quasi-romance" that Shepard could have with Kelly Chambers in ME2.

well, when they said, "virginal girl next door," they were showing pictures of Merrill.

and when they said, "up against the walls" romance, they were showing pictures of Isabella on top of Hawke ( which would fit her character )..........

soo............on face value, I would take that to mean that Merrill is indeed the "virginal girl next door."

I actually hope that is the case, cuz given the fact that she does appear to be some kind of blood mage, that would make her more unique. that is, one who's personality is different from what one would expect based on "role" or "power set."

Well didn't Gaider say that the 'virginal girl-next-door' isn't necessarily Merrill?

But true, it is difficult to figure who else it might be if not her. I doubt there are any more female companions to reveal, unless this other girl is an LI who doesn't ever join the party?

Er... Jennifer was talking archetype, not describing the actual sexual history of any of the characters.

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification.

So I wonder, does that mean Merrill is not 'the girl next door' type character?

Why would it mean that? They were obviously referring to Merrill. Mary's just saying that "virginal" is here used as a metaphorical adjective/description of personality rather than its factual meaning. Just like shes a "girl next door" type, but doesn't actually live next door.

As Mary said, they were talking about ARCHETYPES. In DAO, that particular "virginal" archetype was filled by Leliana (who only would have sex if in love, not "just for fun") or Alistar, more obviously.

So it means a "general idea" of the romantic demeanour of the character, not that every little bit of history of their biographies must match that particular archetype.

I know, I was over thinking it. It does strike me as odd when she said they wanted to try something different with the romances and then brought up two very cliched archetypes.

I think its because in a promotional video you just cramm all the basic ideas that you can in the tiny amount of time that you have.

I mean, for me its a triumph that Mr. Gaider appeared at all, talking about the character stuff...

You mean you don't appreciate his quirky, sometimes misleading, sometimes sarcastic, but almost always never fulfilling remarks that light up threads with responses? Don't let anyone hear you say that.^_^

Quite the opposite, Gaider's a lot of fun...  I wish they made a video with him and all the writing team talking about the characters...

What I cant stand is the main PR guy for this game, and all his lame sentences... "you push a button and its AWESOME", "think like a general, fight like a Spartan" and so on...

OK, there's something that makes total sense to me. I can understand marketing but to blatantly put 'spartan' to try to get the 300 demographic... I read that line and just had to take a step back and think, "they really just put that there?"

Oh, well... Too late to say anything now. All I can do is admire the Merril and hope for the best for her in DAII.

Well you could activate blood magic and then use the regular healing spell or group heal and it would technically drain your health while replenishing your allies' HP B)

They seem to be pandering to a teenaged boy's visions of glory and grandeur.

No. The virginal archetype in no way, shape, or form fits Leliana.

If by 'odd' you mean it's a blatant contradiction, I agree.

@Maria I meant it metaphorically... You know, the kind of shy, very sweet, very "girly" girl who talks about supposedly "girl" stuff (shoes, fashion, hair).

And the part that she had sex with you only if in love is 100% true...

Well, it does partially in that a "virginal girl-next-door" would likely be very sweet, and Leliana was very sweet. Other than that, it doesn't fit.

Leliana never struck me as someone who was shy nor "very sweet". She struck me as someone who had deep convictions, a manipulator of men and situations when the need arose. The veritble "rose with thorns" so to speak.

I do agree with your other assesments though.

Hopefully blood sacrifice doesn't make Merrill go all Caladrius and say "A BLOOD SACRIFICE. FOR POWER!!!!11" when she does it.

i think merrill being a blood mage will be awesome. and besides spirit summoning and blood magic is known amongst the dalish ala zathrian and velanna. theres also a codex where a keeper prepares to banish a spirit. i think its the brecilian codex? cant remember.

i really hope blood mages can summon demons in da2. as for merrill i can c her using lightning and earth and maybe some creation spells. maybe spirit too like walking bomb. itd be sweet if we could have a skeleton and say a rage demon summoned at the same time lol.

I will appreciate Merrill if and only if she is voiced by Eve Myles.

Is she? Please?
