I'm going to go with the mirror in the ruins theory with the Dalish Warden that inherently changed something about Merrill( basically it gave her some sorta power-up, which I know is a cliche that JRPGs use, but sue me that's what I'm used to). And the thing about delivering that amulet to the Dalish, I surely hope that doesn't come back to bite us in the ass in future DA's or later on in this story( from a Flemeth perspective, not a Dalish Elf one)...

??  She was only there when Duncan smashed the mirror, along with Fenarel if you brought him.  I guess you could say she might have gotten taint sickness but then she'd just be dead.

I remember that...I'm just going by a weird wha if situation...I guess, I'm looking for away to tie in the events of origins with the events( from a Dalish's perspective) of DA 2 to the point of where we meet up with Merrill and Marethari. I admit it is was longwinded or random..but hey it's atleast something to begin with at this point. ;)

Character Reveal for Merrill is definetely needed though.

Her story will have interesting implications for those of us who tried to write backstory/ postlude for our Dalish PCs. Sandtigress is hoping she won't be exiled because it makes her postlude AU. I wrote up some stuff for my Dalish PC who is a blood mage (made with the mod). Assuming Merrill is an outcast for using blood magic, it still works with my story, though it means my PC couldn't go back to her clan. I am most interested. *steeples fingers*

Seeing as the magazine article states that Merrill specialization is "Dalish Pariah" and pariah means outcast or exile, i'm thinking that she might have done something like blood magic summoning and she is a sort of outcast amongst her clan if she isn't exiled.

Or maybe, Pariah just means something else for the Dalish.
For example, it could be a title for someone that practices certian magic, a position within the clan, etc.

Has it even been confirmed anywhere other than the German magazine that it's 'Pariah'?
Because it could be another incorrect translation.

The only thing that makes me think that translation is right is that it came from 3 different sources, the 2 articles written here with both guys speaking German and a Russian website which translated the whole preview as well translated it as "Pariah" so I'm quite sure it's true or at least something similar to the truth.

Fanfiction huh? Sounds interesting...or atleast better than some of the fanfictions I've partly read in the Fenris thread( damn, now I remember why I barely check that read with the exception of maybe the last page everyday...).

Maybe she's tainted by the Darkspawn blood? And has since become a Grey Warden? That would be tragic and interesting.

Yes, my Dalish mage was the reason I started on the embarrassing habit of posting DA fiction in public.  I just wanted to hammer out some backstory since the character was created with a mod and thus was a little AU.  You can follow the link in my signature if you're so inclined.  Just... well, it's rough, especially the early bits.  I didn't start trying to make it a "story" until later.  Merrill isn't really in it though.  I might have mentioned her in passing.  Sandtigress has written some Dalish stuff, too.  I link to her in my Favorite Authors.

Aren't Grey Wardens supposed to have like a headquarters in every nation in Thedas? I'm not sure Merrill can go leaving it and adventuring with Hawke in a path that'll lead to a political shift in Thedas, Grey Wardens are supposed to remain neutral I think.

In fairness, I don't see how any Fenris fanfics (or any DA2 fanfics really) could be all that good at this point. Posted Image I mean we know nothing about these characters' personalities. I hail from the Fenris Thread but I always skip through the fanfics (except for the little scripts people and Mr. Gaider post that are meant to be parodies, cuz those are funny). For me it's just weird to read fanfiction about characters we're all basically just guessing on (and I'm someone who loves fanfiction).

They are suppose to, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will.

Alistair immediately comes to mind.

Thanks and wow...18 different pages worth of work...I'm impressed...I've seen people write anime/manga fanfiction shorter and no where near as detailed or chronicled...

But Alistair was an heir to the throne, this is a higher calling.... Merrill if indeed becomes a grey warden would have no such interest in any political matters...

You are correct in that we know next to nothing about these characters...hencing why I couldn't read anymore than I did while I was there. Now, the character banters....those are hilarious though I would suspect the ones in the game will be even better( I can already see the convos between merrill and fenris, merrill and bethany, fenris and bethany)...all about their relationships with Hawke or magic, but probadly Hawke mostly at the start. So, I get your point...

Yeah I have to say that weirds me out.  Not that I should talk, but excessive fangirlism should at least make sense.  lol

Sure, the word "pariah" could mean something else to the Dalish, but the writing team is more likely using that term for a specific reason. It carries with it some very specific connotations. If Merrill is a "pariah," then that means she is despised and rejected by the rest of her clan.

What we don't know yet is why, though more likely it is due to blood magic.

Thing is, it's not that hard to keep the fact that you're a blood mage a secret... Zathrian supposedly kept it a secret for centuries, if there's no other way to know that someone is a blood mage than seeing them power their spells with blood or summoning demons then Merrill should not have any problem hiding it from her clan, unless Hawke or one of his/her companion rats her out....

That argument doesn't have much merit. Merrill is also Dalish, and the Dalish similarly have no such interest in human political matters.

Unless they affect the dalish directly she shouldn't, and even if they do if she becomes a grey warden she's forced to remain neutral.

And what if those politics affect her as a grey warden directly, ala your own camp from DA:O and determining the political fate of Ferelden?

I'm just saying. I'm not saying that she is or isn't a grey warden, but the concept is interesting and there is no information out there that proves otherwise or any arguments that sway this theory differently.

So, question. If Merrill is a Pariah, and outcast from her clan, she can't really be a Keeper anymore, right? She might have the spells, but she doesn't have a clan to keep. Or provide... Keeper services for. I always thought that the Keeper was the chieftain or leader of the clan. Since Merrill doesn't belong to her clan anymore... Now she's just an apostate elven mage. Who is a blood mage. Wow, between Bethany and Merrill (or Mage Hawke and Merrill), the templars are going to have a heyday.

Oh, and I forgot to add, if Merrill is a blood mage, how will Fenris, the ex-slave of a Tevinter mage (who probably also used blood magic) feel about the path that she's gone down?

I'm more interested in how he's going to feel about Bloodmage Marian, considering I am probably going to try to hit that.  Posted Image  Assuming he's an LI blah blah.  But you're right, there could be trouble in paradise.
