I hope these new Welsh accents for the Dalish, aren't too strong. I really liked the Dalish having no discernable accents. I can't imagine Merrill having a one.

...Huh? So the Dalish have drooping ears while the city elves have them tapered back like in Origins? This would be good since the city elves are known to the Dalish as 'flat-ears', yet they have practically the same ears. Or maybe Merrill's ears just unique? She looks cuter now that I've noticed that!

I always thought it'd be an interesting plot point of City Elves actually cosmetically altered their ears either through surgery or tape in order to appear more human, cutting down the racism aimed at them.

As far as I can tell, all the racist humans only hate "knife-ears" because of their ears being pointed rather than round, and the fact that a full grown male elf, is shorter than a full grown female human, when all the male humans are taller.

This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, however. they've already stated that male elves are just as tall if not taller than females, and give an appearance similar to the Na'vi from Avatar.

Don't remember the exact article, but it was cited on this thread.

Its not the ears... its the whole package. You strip a people off their land, their culture, their History, and you  continue to oppress them, you naturally will see them as inferior, dangerous, unworthy.

Take any example: The indians (of India)  had built empires which lasted hundreds of years, at the time that in England people lived in huts, pretty much: But for the British colonials the indians were nothing but ignorant, base people. The fact that they were dark-skinned only made it easier to differentiate them.

Same happened in South Africa during the Apartheid, or with the Jews in **** Germany. Or blacks in the US.

But I digress. :) Actually if that fact of the city Elves prooves to be true, I'll find it cute. Very similar to what many blacks used to do in the old days in America, when they dyed and flattened their natural afro cause they were ashamed of it.

That's what I was getting at: they take things at face value. If they look different, live poorer lives and don't have a positively named title, then they must not be as worthy.

Since I've got nothing to do and found the German text from the PC Games mag on a Russian website I decided to extract the text and translate it using Google, nothing we don't know but having the full text helps :P

Merrill (Magiern): Bekannt aus der Elfen-Herkunftsgeschichte von Origins, jetzt als niedlich-schüchterne Begleiterin rekrutierbar. Spezialklasse Daish Paria mit Blutmagie-Anleihen.

Translation: Merrill (magi): Known from the Elven origin story of Origins, now as a cute and shy companion recruitable. Special class Daish pariah with blood magic bonds.

We combating all manner of undead and witness how Merrill eliminates a barrier with a blood magic ritual. But that does not seem to be their only secret, because she is being pushed by Marethari to leave the elven clan and travel with us to Kirkwall, where we Merrill now stands as party members.

I hope he's not Anders as well, I only kept him till I got Velanna then he was stuck at the keep, even though Velanna was equally annoying she had a bit of charcater to it.

I'll repost a commentary from Gaider in the Fenris thread (boy that thread was just crazy yesterday...)

"There are two things that need to exist when creating a companion:

1) A place in the story.

2) A hook.

#1 doesn't always happen if #2 is really strong, so sometimes we forget... and then we regret it later on. A place in the story means that there is something going on in the plot (or one of the plots) that is very central to what that character is about. They care about it, so you do too. Plots can be abstract things, especially when they relate to a world you have only a vicarious stake in, so followers serve to personify those conflicts.

But #2 is enough. There has to be a hook-- for me, not the player. Something that I want to say with a character, either a moment I know I want them to have, a twist on a romantic archetype, a thing that they have which makes me excited to write them. If there isn't a hook, no matter what we do the character will be boring. That can happen, too, in which case you have to create a hook. For yourself. Nobody else needs to care about it.

For Morrigan, the hook was the Dark Ritual. I knew that moment would exist almost before the rest of the game did. Alistair didn't start off having a hook, and I realized it after I began writing him. He was a distrustful, surly sort and I hated it. So... what to do? I wanted to make his dialogue fun, the sort of person who guys wouldn't hate because he was a buddy. Since I was watching BtVS at the time, it came to me when I was (predictably) analyzing Joss Whedon's method of delivering dialogue. Anachronistic, sure, but could it be done in fantasy...? I wanted to try.

There was a hook for Fenris, but I can't tell you what it is yet. It's a spoiler. The tattoos came later (and, amusingly, before I even saw Jack), but there was an element to Fenris that made me want to write him. His #1 is also significant, which is important as I mandated that every DA2 character would need a #1. It's a more personal story, after all, without a "YOU MUST SAVE THE WORLD NO YOU MUST" thing going on-- and thus the ciphers are that much more important.

Everything else after that fact is just mechanics and plot documents. And finding the voice. That's separate and not always easy, and sometimes doesn't come until you hit the Moment-- which could happen right away or halfway through writing the character."

In another post he also confirmed (sort of) that Elves will not wear shoes... lol

Can I niggle at the translation a bit?  In the second one, the correct translation is "that does not appear to be her only secret" and then it says she travels with us to Kirkwall where she is immediately available as party member.

Well of course, thanks for the correction, I don't know German, thank god for Google :P

Also if the writer of the article points to blood magic as Merrill's secret maybe her clan doesn't know about it yet and she isn't exiled after all....
