If the sole objective (pun perhaps intended) was the protection of one's feet than I believe that would be the logical outcome. I fully acknowledge that there are tradeoffs, which is why the possession of footwear is so advantageous. It can be applied or removed when the balance of the equation changes.Beerfish wrote...
All of this adds up to a viable reason to not wear shoes. By the reasoning above we should be wearing shoes all the time in the house, on the beach on the grass in the back yard.
You can believe it or not but some people think it's better to go barefoot than otherwise for a variety of reasons.

I don't mind the shoeless elves. Although it will be nice if someone of the art development team explain why they don't like elves with shoes.

Its not that they dont like shoes. My guess is that they think being shoeless give Elves more personality... Im cool with that.

Ah, but you're failing to think like an artist.Atakuma wrote...
I really hope the lack of footwear only applies to the dalish. It just wouldn't make sense to me having the city elves barefoot as well.

In west Ferelden, born and raised,
in the forests is where I spent most of my days...
Screw it, I'm doing the whole song.
Chillin out, maxin, ralaxin, all cool,
and all shootin sum Halla outside of the training,
when a couple of shems, who were u to no good,
started making trouble in my Clan's hood.
I got in one little fight and my Keeper got scared and said
"You're moving with this guy named Hawke to Kirkwall"
I whistled for the dude and when he came near,
He had a beard on his face and was Nutella smeared.
If anything, I could say that this shem was rare,
but I thought, could be worse, "Yo holmes, to Kirkwall!"
I pulled up to the city, rebellion a stirring,
and I yelled to Hawke, "Go home, I'll see you later!"
Looked around the place, I was finally there,
to take up my staff, now I'm the Keeper of Kirkwall
Considering this would require said artist to think like an idiot, i think it's unfair to paint them all with such brush. Maybe they just really like feet. The Gentle Ben wrote...

Well, a triviality can still be ridiculous, and I have to agree with yukidama that this would appear to qualify. If this sort of design decision is a consequence of a singular companion outfit than I would score one for the opposition (Companion specific clothing is fine by me, but the idea that the choice was between complete variation and a single outfit always struck me as an obviously false dichotomy. Design multiple outfits per character (I'm aware that it was in all likelihood a resource decision, especially as it pertains to cinematics, but that was not the reasoning put forward)). By placing the onus for clothing selection on the developers, the implementations put forth would seem to be more fairly open to criticism.
Or people could get over the notion that they need to choose their companion's outfits in addition to their own. Really, I just think people like to obsess. The fact that you could change companion outfits in DAO didn't stop anyone from nit-picking over their appearance or whipping up alternate appearance mods to suit.
"Merrill Shoe Mod" comin' up!

And I'd say it's just as questionable whether a fan's whims regarding what they consider "realistic" or pleasing should be more valid than an artist's... or a writer's, for that matter. Get over yourselves.
Considering it's generally the players not the artist in question that get to play the game in the end? I'm not sure who in this situation needs more to "get over themselves" -- i'm talking specifically about situations like changing the game mechanics to introduce pointless "heat clips" because the artists really really wanted to have this sort of visual in it.David Gaider wrote...
