Yeah i wasn't trying to imply dogs are immune to such issues, but just the same they're built different enough to make it considerably lesser concern for them than it'd be for a human. Also, unlike humans the dogs don't get choice in this matter -- they can't exactly make themselves shoes even if they ever wished so.Apollo Starflare wrote...
I am aware of that, hence why I said that I find it hard to believe his paws/paw pads are thick enough to protect against everything they come across (I own two collies and if you think those toe pads are protective enough to resist sharp things like nails then you would be surprised, I've had to pull thorns out of poorly paws before for instance).

Well, if your at all curious about the examples, ME had a system where the weapons would never run out of ammo. However, as you used them, they would overheat, limiting how much you could fire without pausing. Suposedly, the artist wanted to ad a reloading visual, and so heat clips, which from a pure gameplay perspective functioned as ammo, were introduced. Some people didn't like it. Don't know how universally loathed it may or may not have been.TJPags wrote...

(although i'd question whether it's such a good idea to let the artists call the shots like that, considering supposedly number of questionable design elements in ME2 like the whole "weapon reloading" stuff and the widely mocked vacuum breathing masks were result of listening to the artists' whims perhaps a tiny bit too much)
And I'd say it's just as questionable whether a fan's whims regarding what they consider "realistic" or pleasing should be more valid than an artist's... or a writer's, for that matter. Get over yourselves.
I'm sure you don't mean this to say that an artist's - or a writer's - opinion is more valid than that of the customers for whom they're creating their art, do you?
I mean, yes, some people will be unhappy no matter what you do, but if a large majority of your customers don't like something you did, wouldn't that be something to consider before continuing to do it or deciding to change?
And I have no idea if the examples mentioned there meet that "large majority" mark I mentioned - having never played ME or ME2, I have no idea what they even are - but I'm speaking in more general terms.
The helmets, well, I think that is more universal. First game, when your party went into a hostile enviornment each party member had some form of airtight spacesuit helmet. Second game, most of them only had breathing masks.

Yes? Did I say that fans didn't have a right to comment as they wish?
I said what's questionable is the idea that the fan's idea of what's pleasing is MORE valid than an artist's, the original comment being that the artists are obviously doing whatever they wish without care or oversight-- as if they didn't care about the setting. An artist being concerned only with what looks good is just as bad as a fan caring only about what is realistic. We all wear our blinders.
I did not say the fan's concern was LESS valid then the artist's. If someone wants to groan about shoeless elves-- by all means. Knock yourselves out. It's your dollar, after all.

In both the origin story and Velanna's, it does seem like they are chased from place to place because they are mostly unwelcome. I suppose some clans would keep to wilder areas but they would have to trade a bit and thus come into contact with humans. Then you have the templars etc. I'm sure it's no accident we found templar corpses in the Brecilian Forest.tmp7704 wrote...

That's true enough but it has more to do with access to resources than anything else, imo. I.e. if you try to settle on land someone else considers already theirs, start hunting game in the woods which up to this point was your source of food etc, then the tensions are bound to appear. Granted, being of different species, the history between these species and attitudes on both sides don't help to alleviate that in the slightest.ViSeirA wrote...

I'd just like to point out this idea is entirely your own construct -- as my initial comment was just whether it's wise (for the people in charge of design) to give too much ear to individual fancies of the artists, this due to possibility of:David Gaider wrote...

An artist being concerned only with what looks good is just as bad
To clarify, i wasn't actually thinking of fans' opinions there at all. Instead it was more along the lines of my experience with ME2 and how it'd make gameplay changes based on desires of people who weren't designers and factors which had nothing to do with actual gameplay ... and how that makes me somewhat wary whenever i hear "we made it so because that's what tickles the artists pink" as explanation for why things are the way they are.

I was just reading the Codex on The Long Walk and found this amusing tidbit:
"We walked with what little we had on our backs. Some walked without shoes, for they had none. Whole families, women with infants, the old and young alike--all of them made their way across the land on foot."
Historical precedent lol

We put shoes on horses. I put balloons on my dog's feet when I run her during winter (so she doesn't get ice balls in her pads). If your point is that we under utilize footwear for our animal friends then you may well be right. I would suggest that the minimal prevalence of such accessories within the animal kingdom is a consequence of a lack of ingenuity and opportunity rather than an insufficience of advantages.Beerfish wrote...
