See this is why I didn't want Merrill to become a blood mage, it was inevitable that she would want to use my blood for something.. I just knew it..

All Dalish take the vallaslin- that's how they get their tattoos- not only mages.  There may be extra stuff for keepers, but if she's a pariah for being a blood mage that rules that out.  Guess we'll have to see.

According to the DA Wiki, you're right, but in the codex for it, there is no mention of all the Dalish undertaking it - just the mages. Actually it doesn't specify which clan members exactly, I take that back. I guess it must have been interpretted that way.

But yeesh! My Dalish Elf has the writing coloured on a quarter of her face. Must've hurt.
Although, she's very passionate about her being Dalish, so maybe it didn't hurt so much.

I don't think Merrill will be a companion. I'm pretty sure this is Bioware's revenge for having to sift through thousands of "will Sandal/Wade/Ser Jory's wife/Shmooples/Slim Couldry/Teh Warden/those deer we saw in the Dalish Origin/disgruntled patron/Owain appear in DA2?" threads. They lead us on only to CUT US DOWN!

It's a rite of passage, so yeah all Dalish take it (or "gain" it as the codex says).  Note Gheyna and Cammen, those wacky lovebirds, and the other children don't have tattoos, but all the adult Dalish do.

And yep, I'm sure it would hurt, especially around the eyes and mouth.

On topic: Merril has definetly gotten a cute upgrade fo shure. I just did the dalish origin again a bit back and she was kinda annoying "WE NEED THE KEEPERS PERMISSION TO BREATH!!!!1111111" attitude was pretty annoying, here's to hoping she becomes more independant.

I know right? Is the strategically placed shot of Merrill during the "Making of: Story" developer diary Bioware teasing us that she's a LI or is just because of her looks? I sincerly hope it's that she's a LI, but until then I'll just keep checking the internet until it's officially confirmed (or when the game comes out)

 I HOPE she's an LI.  Female characters kinda get all the non-human LIs in Bioware game.  Zevran was a PREDOMINATELY FEMALE LI, and he was the only elf LI in DAO.  Then, compared to Male Shep in Mass Effect, who has Asari Liara and Quarian Tali'Zorah, Fem Shep has Thane, Garrus, Liara and Kaidan.  It's just not fair.

"OOHMEGUD! YOU SAVED MY LIFE AGAIN! I WUBZ U!!!!"

or they have some special ability you don't so you feel more obligated to keep them around and they just grow on you that way.
