Funny how every appreciation thread seems to have a trial period where the dominant theme is the exact opposite of appreciation.

I don't see how blind approval is any better or worse than blind mocking.

It's not any better or worse intrinsically, except, like I said, in an "appreciation" thread the mocking seems a little out of place.

You missed the first. . .I want to say 3 Isabela threads where she was called a ****, didn't you.

I like her new look since for myself I always felt the elves should look less like a normal human. While still being heavily humanoid and I would say fairly close to DA:O elves there are elements that make her appearance slightly different. Just enough to make me appreciate them being an actual different race and not just shorter humans with pointy ears. Hell, I would go a little bit further give her the black eyes from the concept storyboard elf.

I agree with this 100%.  Considering how big of a focus DA:O put on racial issues, it only makes sense that there are actually some differences worth noticing between the races.  For example, the biggest racial slur against elves in DA:O was "knife-ears" but from a distance of more than a couple feet you can't even TELL that they have pointy ears.  In people's avatar pics here on the forums, I can rarely tell the elves and humans apart.

I am kinda baffled by the contradictory requests on these forums.  People complain that humans are boring and they want more elves/dwarves/qunari/whatever, but they also get mad when their elves/dwarves/qunari look LESS human?!

A thread titled "let's laugh at Merrill's goat ears and ridiculously large rack" would get locked in minutes.

I was hoping for Origins elves, only maybe fiercer and more tribal in keeping with the lore.

Yeah.

But anyway, I want elves to look different, just not to look like monkeys.  Or Marvin the Martian.

That's kind of what I was referring to to begin with.

I hope she at least still has some of her old personality. Her face markings and eye color aren't even the same anymore.

I can only take so many character retcons...

Still pretty shocked it's actually Merrill, but she really is freaking adorable. I can't wait to hang with her. And lay waste to anyone who tries to hurt her. Aww, I bet she and Carver would be a cute couple...

*adorable "aah"* Oh god your right, my hawke may have to kill Carver.

But keeping in the theme of adorable, she is cute, I've already said in another thread that I want that scarf, also I love the way she's smiling as she looks at Carver and Hawke almost as if she's sizing them up thinking "i could kill both of you right here." Ooh, maybe she's the Princess stabbitty stab kill kill Alistari misconstrued Leliana for. Except this time with fireballs.

Oh that comparison points it out to me, atleast what my hang up is, the nasal region or the bridge in particular has been flattened or ill defined, the orbital region and eyes themselves are still indicative of a younger age aswell though. If the bridge of the nose had definition and the eyes were slightly more in proportion then I think she wouldn't look so young.

Anyway my criticism isn't based on the fact that she's female as others like to pull a card on, "she" is not female, it is a series of triangles which approximate the shape of a female, it is a peice of art, I criticise it from an artistic point of view.

I kind of like that they're more distinctive now. They aren't as "pointy ear humans" anymore.

The more I look, the more I see a cliche elf. I really had faith they'd bring a different visual take on the elves this time. And Fenris does look pretty damn cool. Then there's this creature....

What I don't understand - and I'll quit my tirade with this point - is how Bioware can craft such a marvelous and unique looking universe in Mass Effect, and then struggle so much with it in Dragon Age. Do they have completely separate design teams?

As far as I can remember, they do share team members between the two series but for the most part they're separate entities.

If they work like the majority of multi title companies, they do to a certain extent, people will move around a bit, but essentially the higher ups like the art director etc aren't managing more than one project, and since its the directors and production guys that determine the shape of the game those that move around don't have a massive impact on how things are.

so basially yes they do have seperate teams.

Yeah......

Regarding elves' appearance, I dunno, it looks to me like they just slid the "fey" meter a little farther toward "fey." Elves were otherwise always a bit small and spindly. It doesn't seem that drastic.
