"In the Free Marches, during the quest that Flemeth asks you to carry out for her, you'll meet up with the Keepers of the Dalish. One of them is Merrill, a doe-eyed elf who'll be your quest guide and also a potential companion. She's crazy-booksmart, can recount pretty much the entire history of her people, and can navigate the Fade, an other-worldly, alternate reality. But for all her skills, she's a bit of a strange cookie with little to no experience with the outside world--or even the Dalish elves themselves."
For those who wonder about the words "potential companion" having a deeper meaning (romance), I present this quote about Isabela. Take what you will from it.
"Isabela, the saucy sea captain whom you could potentially have a tryst with in Origins, has been confirmed as a possible companion for Dragon Age 2."

She's a nerd-type character going by the description from OXM...which means she's probadly a bit on the antisocial side of the totempoll...which would be different from Hermoine... but not so much. I do get that vibe from her though...so this will be an interesting character none the less.

Prehaps being a book-worm, fade-loving mage, she relegated communty aspects of being a dalish...
Edit: Ninja'd LOL
Please stop with the Harry Potter references people, youre gonna make me hate Merrill...

Well of course Hermione didn't seem antisocial compared to the other major characters in Harry Potter which were also antisocial. Never in the books did Harry have to pluck Ron away from his mass of other friends because every character in the books from Dumbledore to Sirius has an antisocial way to them.

Sorry, I don't read much fiction beyond Tom Clancy novels, John Grisham novels, or Harry Potter, so that's why I am describing Merrill with a HP archetype.
Still, it is very welcome to hear stuff like this. I like her already.

Her archetype also doesn't really match up to any characters in LOTRs or the much less touted Eragon series of books which featured the elven race within them...so by virtue of her being a mage... I would say HP comparisons are rather justified in this case.

The only developed female, "background" character was Galadriel, and she was no more than a sort of a "nurse", who prepared and aided the warriors who were going to do the hard work later...

LMAO!
Well, Eragon isn't much better...though there are more females focused on but the only elf to get any real focus is Ariya( the elven princess) and she is more of rogue then a mage...but she can use some magic...probadly not to the level of Merrill or anything we've seen in DA anyway...

Funny you should mention Nurse...
Enter Eowyn, the sister of Eomer.
"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s
daughter. You stand between me and my lord and king. Begone, if you be
not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch
him."
Just before she essentially b**ch-slapped the Witch King of Angmar (probably the second baddest character in Middle-Earth) and sent him wailing off to Hell.
And, as she puts it to Aragorn "But am I not of the House of Eorl, a shieldmaiden and not a dry-nurse?"
But I do agree Tolkein was a man of his times, and can come off a little staid. Judging him by today's standards seems a little silly to me, byt YMMV.

Eowyn was pretty bad-ass, I remember watching that part of the third movie in absolute awe...as it turns out so was the rest of the soldout movie theatre I was in at the time...LOL.
I even had such a crush on her that I thought for a moment...there was a shot in hell that Aragorn might wind up with her, if abything I could see the writers focusing Aveline's personality to be alot like Eowyn's...
But unfortunately, the rest of females who had any focus in LOTR left a lot to be desired...even Arowen though her part in ' the fellowship of the ring' was pretty sweet too. LOTR just wasn't a series where women had a dominate role in the story...and so they were shown to be not nearly as powerful or epic...but they did have their moments nonetheless.

He was a traditionalist. It's not the same thing. And no one should comment without including the Silmarillion in the discussion, including the Tolkien pantheon.Drizzt ORierdan wrote...

Oh god, so many derails so little time. Why isn't there a Tolkien discussion page in Off Topic? I need to start one.

Theory: Her branching Friendship/Rivalry paths will at least partly revolve around your Hawke's own views on this issue.

I think Aveline will likely lecture Merrill heavily on this issue - perhaps they might even have a serious conflict over this one.

That was the same comment I made... she's the cute and possibly lovable(if an LI) Dalish elf nerd next door.
@XX55XX : Well, then that would mean that Aveline would have an issue with both elves at some oit or another during the storyline...judging from the last dev diary.

I'm calling it now. Merrill will be COMPLETELY oblivious to anything being wrong with Blood Magic at all. She'll be incredulous of the very fact it could even be considered more evil then any other school of magic. Also, she will most likely be very, very stubborn about that stance as well.
Theory: Her branching Friendship/Rivalry paths will at least partly revolve around your Hawke's own views on this issue.
Unlikely. Considering that her specialty class is called "Dalish Pariah" I'm guessing she's been cast out by her clan for her use of blood magic, and thus would know excruciatingly well what other people think about blood magic. Now, whether she agrees or tries to justify her actions remains to be seen.

Someone should photoshop Gordon Freeman's nerdy glasses onto her.

I read that and thought of Gary Oldman. Weird, but relevant to the nerd look.
I'd watch the Dark Knight now if I didn't have my suspense of disbelief ruined so many times.

You mean the Gary Oldman from the newer set of Batman movies? Yeah, i could kinda see that but I think we need a female actor with that kinda appeal to it... to go with Merrill. Someone earlier in this thread brought up Amy Acker( from the 'Angel' series) as her VA and I think she would certainly fit the bill...
